Extractions: Barry Mittan Trifun Zivanovic, who will turn 30 in April, has written himself into the history of skating in many ways. Born in California, Zivanovic skated for the United States until 2001, winning silver and bronze medals at the U.S. Nationals in 1999 and 2000. He also competed at the Four Continents Championships those years, finishing seventh and ninth respectively, and at the 1999 Worlds in Helsinki, finishing 16th. Although many skaters have competed for more than one country during their careers, Zivanovic is the first skater to compete in both the Europeans and Four Continents Championships. If he reaches his goal of competing at the Olympics in 2006, he will become the only skater ever to compete in every senior-level ISU figure skating championship. He started skating at the age of seven as a hockey player, a sport he continued to play competitively for more than 10 years. When he was nine, he took a power skating course to improve his hockey skills and added another dimension to his time on the ice. "I played center and was always the fastest player on my hockey team," he said. "But the coaches told me I was a better skater without the stick and the puck. My mom bribed me with candy and toys to take figure skating lessons and I started to really enjoy it after my first win. I kept doing both until I was 18, and then decided to concentrate on figure skating. You can express yourself better as an individual."

This new event is open to skaters from all countries outside Europe and means that the ISU now offers equal opportunities for all skaters to develop and compete at Championship level. Previously, skaters from outside Europe could only participate in two of the annual ISU Figure Skating Championships: the World Championships and the World Junior Championships. COMPULSORY DANCES The Championships opened with compulsory dances and the pairs' short program. World bronze medallists (CAN) drew to skate first in the opening dance and will go down in the history books as the first competitors in the Four Continents Championships. The seven-time Canadian champions were placed first by all seven judges in both dances. They earned three 5.8s for timing and expression for their Tango Romantica and one 5.9 and a total of six 5.8s for their

Extractions: The city of Los Angeles and the All Year Figure Skating Club hosted the U.S. Figure Skating Championships from January 6-13. Fields of up to 18 skaters vied for three Olympic berths in singles and two in pairs and dance. Following the competition, the United States Figure Skating Association named its team for the Olympic Games, the World Championships, the World Junior Championships, and the Four Continents Championships. Tenley Albright. Peggy Fleming. Janet Lynn. Michelle Kwan moved ahead of all three by claiming her sixth U.S. title in front of a home crowd in Los Angeles. The twenty-one year old World Champion enters the Olympics bolstered by two perfect scores of 6.0s for her free skate to "Scheherazade." Completing six triple jumps, Kwan nevertheless left room for improvement at the Olympics. Her planned triple toe-triple toe combination, which she has not landed cleanly all season, became a triple-double. The audience of 18,500 couldn't have cared less, giving America's best hope for Olympic gold a rousing ovation before she had even finished her program. Thought to be battling for bronze at best, seventeen-year old sensation Sasha Cohen skated her way to a silver medal with near-flawless performances in the short and free programs. Rebellious by nature, Cohen skated a conservative free program that did not include an attempt at the quadruple salchow, a jump with which Cohen hopes to make history. No woman has ever landed a quadruple jump cleanly in competition, and since the retirement of Surya Bonaly, no woman has even been seriously trying. But Cohen's goal at Nationals was simply to make the Olympic team, and after much discussion with coach John Nicks, the quad was put aside in order to increase her chances of skating a clean program. With six triple jumps and only a small flaw on an improvised seventh triple, Cohen skated perhaps her best performances to date to decisively earn a berth on the Olympic team.

A full entry list attached and Final standings of the competition will be published after each event. Ice Dance 2000 World silver medalists and defending Skate America Champions Barbara Fusar-Poli and Maurizio Margaglio (ITA) continued their streak of impressive performances by capturing the early lead in the Compulsory Dance at Skate America in Colorado Springs, CO. "It was great," said Fusar-Poli. "The people are wonderful here. We have such a great fan club. This is a good start to our season." Canadians Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz started down the comeback trail by finishing second in the Compulsory Dance. Bourne and Kraatz missed Canadian Nationals and the World Championships last year due to her knee injury, and the couple used the time off to re-evaluate their skating and their goals. "We had to really rethink what is it exactly we want to do in skating, where do we want to go and where do we want to be by the time we get to Salt Lake City - Salt Lake City always being that big goal for us," said Kraatz. "We had to sit back and reflect on some of the changes we could do - was it really possible to regain some of the ground we had lost after last season."

By the end, however, everything was turned upside down. No one coming into this competition would have ever predicted what ultimately unfolded in this event. Next to skate was Matthew Savoie who had placed fifth in the short program. Skating to Gershwin's piano concerto in F, he skated a strong program that was well presented and few errors, but without attempting a quad. He started with a successful triple Salchow and then a triple Axel - triple toe loop combination. After a double Axel (with a late step out) and a death drop, he landed a second triple-triple combination consisting of triple flip and triple toe loop. He also completed solo triple loop, Axel, and Lutz (that looked far more like a flip) for a total of eight triples. He received placements of second through fourth to place third in the free skating and was able to move up to third overall when Weiss crashed and burned in the subsequent performance. Notes after the short program.
