Extractions: The brainchild of former U.S. medalist Scott Williams, the American Open is the only professional competition that is truly open to all professional skaters. As host Brian Boitano put it, it is a "competition for the skaters run by the skaters." The scoring system is a unique hybrid with six former skaters assigning scores solely to individual categories, such as jumps, footwork, and originality, and three "celebrity" judges who assign scores based solely on audience appeal. This year's edition of the American Open takes place in a full-size arena, the First Union Center in Philadelphia, for the first time. The field is also the most competitive to date, with five Olympic or World medalists competing. Night One-Technical Programs The event began with the dance competition, where 1998 Olympic silver medalists Anjelika Krylova and Oleg Ovsiannikov took first place with 69.1 points out of a possible 70, the second-highest score earned among any of the competitors. Performing many of the required elements of an eligible free dance, such as a clockwise circular footwork in closed position, Krylova and Ovsiannikov danced with joy and precision to the soundtrack from Dr. Zhivago

Extractions: My parents and I walked into the arena about an hour early, and a lady asked if we would like to be audience judges. Of course, they didn't believe her, but they agreed to judge the Show Act competition. So, about a half hour before the event, all of the judges met with the referee Tony Paul and he told us how to judge the event, and what to look for. It was very interesting and it made me even MORE excited about the rest of the evening. We found our seats in the second row, center ice, and noticed that we could see the "Kiss and Cry" area, and that we were so close to the rink that some great photos would come out! (at least that's what I thought!)... Around 7:15, the announcement was made that the competition was going to begin, and Sara Simpson & Nicholas Crowers gave an ice dance exhibition. It was skated to "Oye Como Va", but they were quite slow, but still made a very exciting, attractive dance team. Marks: 9.3-9.5. Next, the Fox Valley Skating School gave an exhibition, and then Brian Boitano took to the ice. Although he *must* have been tired after competing at the Grand Slam last night, he didn't show it, and skated a clean program to "Blue" by Eiffel 65. He landed a great triple toe/triple toe, as well as his signature Tano triple lutz. Just excellent! The ice was then resurfaced for the Show Act.

VP Biography not only Viktor but also Viktor s brother Vladimir and viacheslav zagorodniuk . In 1988 the skating world was introduced to a new Viktor Petrenko. http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Midfield/3907/longbio.htm
Extractions: Biography Viktor Petrenko was born in Odessa in the Soviet Union on June 27, 1969. He was the first child of Tamara and Vassily. Their second son, Vladimir, was born one and a half year later. As Viktor was a sickly child, the doctor advised the Petrenkos to introduce him to some kind of sport to make him healthier. At that time a new ice rink had been built in the town of Odessa and at that place Viktor started skating at the age of 5. The other favorite sport of his youth was soccer, which he played on the streets with his friends. Viktor was 10 years old when he was discovered by Galina Zmievskaya who was still an unknown coach at the relatively new training facility. During the following years she and Valentin Nikolaev became a coaching team that instructed not only Viktor but also Viktor's brother Vladimir and Viacheslav Zagorodniuk. At the age of 11 Viktor mastered his first triple jump. He won the Junior World Championships at the end of 1983 and earned a place in the Soviet Union's senior National team for the next season. Although he was still very young he had already developed some characteristic movements such as the layback spin or the beautiful landing of his jumps with rounded arms and upturned palms. His jumps continued to improve, he landed his first triple axel in competition at Skate America 1985. In 1988 the skating world was introduced to a new Viktor Petrenko. Though he was still on the threshold between boy and man his skating showed a new maturity and self confidence. His powerful presence on the ice combined with beautiful jumps enabled him to win the bronze medal at the Calgary Olympics. It was a surprising success for Viktor and Galina, who kissed and hugged each other in the Kiss and cry even more emotionally than usual.
American Skating World Article World medalists and European champions viacheslav zagorodniuk and Ilia Kulik . Its so nice to meet my figure skating friends in top competitions, http://members.aol.com/Shushun0va/article.html
Extractions: However, something funny happened after the long program. Following a performance, complete with his trusty triple axel/triple toe loop combination, the 1996 World Junior Champion found himself in third place. The bronze medalist finished ahead of previous World medalists and European champions Viacheslav Zagorodniuk and Ilia Kulik. Also a master of the triple loop, Yagudin said this result threw him for a loop. The medal podium is nothing new for the 17-year-old phenom. He proved his competitive savvy with a third place finish at Skate America and a second place finish at Cup of Russia last fall. Yagudin gave the skating world a preview of things to come by grabbing silver the previous season at the Centennial On Ice Competition finishing ahead of Olympic champion and rink mate Alexei Urmanov.

This means there will be no more Zaggy metric in the future. As I have time, I may turn this into a more general Zag fan page instead. Stay tuned for more details. I may also put together a collection of "Dick Button's top 10 worst insults to Viacheslav Zagorodniuk". Sheesh. Ellyn Kestnbaum has observed that Viacheslav Zagorodniuk (aka "Zaggy") goes to a lot of international competitions and has both defeated and been defeated by nearly all of the other top eligible male figure skaters, and that it might be an interesting metric to rank skaters by comparing how they fared in competition against Zagorodniuk. First of all, here, to the best of my knowledge, is Zagorodniuk's competitive record since the 1991-92 season. Extractions: Skate America 1997 Detroit, MI Ladies Results Men's Results Pairs Results Dance Results Overview Skate America returned to Detroit, having been held here once before in 1995. The last time we were her the event was held in Cobo Arena, the site of Tanyagate during Detroit Nationals in 1994. This time we are at the larger, but aging, Joe Louis Arena, home of the Detroit Red Wings. The event is fairly low key despite this being the first major international competition of an Olympic season. Attendance for the first two nights of Short Programs and Compulsory Dance were poorly attended, and no local advertising is in evidence in the city. Better attendance is expected for the four final rounds on Saturday. As part of the USFSA's TV package with ABC, Skate America is now basically operated as a made for TV event. "The" event of the competition is the Ladies event, which gives us the first meeting of the international season between Michelle Kwan and Tara Lipinski. Here we get our first look at their program strategies for the coming Winter Olympics, in Nagano, Japan. Lipinski has been working on her presentation, but is still counting on technical prowess to keep her World Title and earn Olympic gold. Kwan is adding triple - triple combinations to counter, but will not be giving up an inch in exploiting her more mature and sophisticated style. In the Men's event there is no one here to strain Todd Eldredge, but there is still enough curiosity to see how some of the lesser lights are doing to make the event interesting. On the US side their is interest in how Michael Chack and Scott Davis are doing, and among the international skaters there is the erratic 1994 World bronze medallist Viacheslav Zagorodniuk, and the current World Junior Champion, Evgeny Plushenko.
