Extractions: Photo by Dana Alessi I'm Rudy's east coast web master for this site (so there is a bias!) and am attending both nights of the Jefferson Pilot Pro Skating Championships at the brand new Bi Lo Center in Greenville, SC, October 9-10. This event features all four disciplines (men and women's singles, pairs, and dance), with three performances from all of the competitors. The men completed two of their programs, the technical and artistic, on Friday night during nearly five hours of wonderful skating. Competitors in the men's event in addition to Rudy were Brian Boitano, Victor Petrenko, Philippe Candeloro, Viacheslaw Zagorodniuk (Zaggy), and Igor Pashkevich. The men led off, with the skaters entering the ice area about 30 feet from where I was sitting. I first saw Laura with the coaches, then Rudy in the sailor suit, so two questions were promptly answered...She is still traveling with him, and he was doing the "Village People" program first. The skaters went out for a six minute warmup, and all did not appear to be well with Rudy, although he didn't seem to be injured. He glanced back at Laura several times, shook his head, and had a bad fall. (Laura, on the other hand, looked gorgeous. The people around us kept asking who she was and were intrigued with how her hair shone under the bright lights as well as the fact she was expecting a baby in mid December!) I hoped maybe I had read something false into the warmup, but when Rudy skated the "Village People" number which he did with great energy night after night on the COI Tour, it just wasn't there. He tried his heart out, but singled the opening triple axel (?) attempt, had a fall, and wasn't the powerhouse he had been all year in this program. To his credit, he got the crowd behind him, and they really enjoyed the lighter number after several more serious offerings. This was one of the first times since Rudy turned professional that I thought he got an ok break on the scores, receiving a total of 97.0, putting him in third place after the technical program behind Brian Boitano and Victor Petrenko. (More about Boitano later.)

"We had been dating for two years as well as coaching together," Forsyth said, "so we knew each other well. I missed competing and decided to give it one more shot. We're not skating together for just one season so this year won't make or break us. "This is just the beginning," Manon added. "We want to make it work out for several years." Manon began skating when she was eight. "My Dad worked at the University of Delaware and saw a flyer for group lessons so he took me to skate," she recalled. She competed in freestyle for several years, beginning dance lessons when she was about 13 or 14. "My coach had a boy who was looking for a partner, so I gave it a try," she said. "I didn't like falling and I really enjoyed everything in between the jumps more than the jumps in singles. And I liked skating with somebody else as well." She competed with Chris Obzansky, then with O'Meara.

Extractions: Sandra Loosemore, CBS SportsLine's figure skating writer , has a mission. She wants to overturn the sport's new scoring system. The traditional system came under fire after the Great Flip-Flop of 1997 at the European Championships. In the men's free-skating event, five competitors had skated, and the first three places were held by Alexei Urmanov, Viacheslav Zagorodniuk, and Philippe Candeloro, in that order. The final contestant, Andrejs Vlascenko, placed dead lastbut in the process he managed to bump Candeloro up to second place, denying Zagorodniuk a silver medal. When the new system was announced in July 1998, Cinquanta rejoiced that the problem was solved, so that henceforth "if you are in front of me, you will remain in front of me."

Extractions: Used on About.com on 08/12/01 Since the glory days of Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, British ice dancing has been in a state of disrepair. Marika Humphreys and Vitaliy Baranov hope to change that by bringing British ice dance back to the Olympics, hopefully in 2002. Humphreys, arguably Great Britain's most talented ice dancer since Torvill, has reached the top 16 in the world three times since 1994 with three different partners. But to reach the top in ice dancing, continuity is a must. With husband Baranov by her side, Humphreys may now be able to reach that goal. A natural dancer, Humphreys started her career in ballet when she was only three and continued to dance until she was 21, gaining her performer's qualification but not completing her teacher's certification. She started skating when she was six. "My brother had been skating with a friend and thought I might like it because I was already attending ballet," she said. "I went along and soon got into the swing of it." Even though she specialized in dance, she competed for fun in ladies as well, progressing as far as a double axel.

Extractions: Russia's Ilia Kulik, center, Canada's Elvis Stojko, left, and France's Philippe Candeloro Ilya Kulik soared through a quadruple jump to take the men's figure skating gold medal. He completed a near perfect performance in the free skate to earn Russia's second successive men's figure skating title. He had earlier won the short programme. Elvis Stojko of Canada won the silver despite a flat programme and Philippe Candeloro of France took the bronze, with one 6.0 for presentation. Britain's Steven Cousins finished seventh, while American Todd Eldredge had a rough night and fell to fourth. Kulik, 20, became the first skater since Dick Button in 1948 to take the gold in his initial Olympics, and the third straight skater from a former Soviet republic to take the title. He did so with a marvellous set of jumps, highlighted by a massive quadruple toe loop and two solid triple axles, one in combination. In all, he landed eight triples and the quad, and made them all look easy. His footwork to Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" was playful and his spins precise.

Extractions: Special to The Ukrainian Weekly SIMSBURY, Conn. - Viktor Petrenko was a sickly child when he was growing up in Odesa on the Black Sea. At age 31, the Olympic champion was skating and leaping in Connecticut on March 2-3 to raise money for children suffering deadly and disfiguring diseases in his hometown. "You want to do something in your life to help other people, and when it happens, you feel satisfied," he explained. "Even if only one child feels better, I feel I did what I needed to do." Mr. Petrenko realized he needed to help the children in his part of Ukraine who were dealing with the effects of the nuclear disaster in Chornobyl after he met Nadia and Dr. Zenon Matkiwsky, founders of the Children of Chornobyl Relief Fund (CCRF). They met by chance at the Ukrainian Consulate in New York City two years ago, and last spring they got together again to discuss the possibility of a benefit performance starring Mr. Petrenko and his world-class colleagues. CCRF staff and volunteers organized the event at the International Skating Center of Conn. (ISCC) in Simsbury, home base for Mr. Petrenko and his family since 1994. Together with the strength of Mr. Petrenko's name and the commitment of the center's new partners and staff, the Viktory for Kids ice show raised close to $120,000 after expenses. The proceeds will be used to modernize and equip the new Viktor Petrenko Neonatal Intensive Care Clinic in the Odesa Hospital.
