While the others leave the ice only while executing jumps in this Hershey-bound spectacle, Yagudin spends an entire routine aloft. Lowered from above enveloped in a long white silk shroud and bathed in cold blue light, he performs an aerial ballet worthy of the Cirque du Soleil, perfectly attuned to the exotic strains of Peter Gabriel's "Passion" from "The Last Temptation of Christ" soundtrack. In another show-stopper, Yagudin celebrates what is fast becoming a lost art in figure-skating competition: fancy footwork.

The life of figure skating professionals working in the USA passes mostly outside the Russian publicâs attention. But sometimes they come back. A few days back, the Olympic champion from Salt Lake City, Alexey Yagudin, returned back to Russia. And at once he dumbfounded his audience by stating: " I have returned for good!"

OneStat Alexi Yagudin Alexei Yagudin is an Olympic Gold medallist, four-time World Champion and three-time European Champion and World Professional Champion. At the 2002 Olympic Games Yagudin received scores of all 5.9s in addition to four perfect 6.0s for artistry. No other man in Olympic history has ever earned more than one perfect mark. He is the first man in the history of the sport to claim the triple crown of figure skating by winning the European, Grand Prix and World titles, all in one season and the only skater who won all of the major competitions in one season: Grand Prix, Europeans, Worlds and the Olympics. Alexei is also the only male amateur skater to win the World Professional Championships. At the 2002 World Championships in Nagano he changed the history of sport again when for the first time a skater received six perfect 6.0s for the short program including first ever perfect mark for required elements. Alexei began skating at the age of four, encouraged by his mother, Zoya. Alexei's natural talent was clear from the start. ABC nominated Alexei for the 1999 Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year Award. He was the only figure skater on the list, which includes among others, Andre Agassi, Tiger Woods and Serena Williams.
Extractions: Alexei Yagudin performed a tight, quick spin at the end of his routine. AP SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Alexei Yagudin brushed off Russian rival Evgeny Plushenko as easily as he brushed off the snow during his short program. If the playful Yagudin has another such performance in him, he'll skate away with an Olympic gold medal. Of course, Japan's Takeshi Honda and American Tim Goebel might have other ideas for the long program after finishing behind Yagudin, who swept the judging panel. Plushenko was fortunate to wind up fourth Tuesday night after messing up his quadruple toe loop. For now, the three-time world champion clearly is in charge, and the current world champion needs help. "I am really happy with the work I have done today," Yagudin said, "and I am really concentrating on myself. If you have any questions about him, just ask him." Couldn't do that: Plushenko was a no-show in the interview area after falling on his opening quadruple toe loop.

Extractions: When Jamie Sale / David Pelletier (CAN) delivered the free skating performance of their career only to come up on the short end of a 5-4 split of the judging panel to Russia's Elena Berezhnaya / Anton Sikharulidze for the gold medal, official and unofficial protests rained down on the judges and the International Skating Union (ISU). Within hours of the announced result, a story began surfacing involving the swapping of judging favors that threatened to taint the outcome of the ice dancing competition to begin later that week. Within days, the ISU acknowledged that it had seen enough evidence in the matter to recommend that the International Olympic Committee award an unprecedented second gold medal to the Canadians.
