Extractions: Overview So here it is. The last U.S. National Championships of the 20th century. The championships mid-way through the Olympiad where we will see if the hold-overs from the 1998 Olympics can stay on top and improve, or if the young bucks will push them aside and become the new stars of 2002. In the ladies event Michelle Kwan is the favorite. A place some people say it is difficult for her to be. More than a few observers recently have noticed that over the past few years in nearly every major competition in which she was the favorite she ended up second. Her main competition here will be Sarah Hughes, who has continued to improve since last year, and who has had a strong international season. Next in line are Naomi Nari Nam and Angela Nikodinov, and not far behind the up-and-coming Sasha Cohen. There are three places open on the U.S. World Team and neither Hughes or Nam are age-eligible. A recent ruling from the ISU, however, says that Hughes is eligible by virtue of her World Junior medal from 1999. If Nam, however, places in the top three she will have to medal at World Juniors next month in order to compete at the World Championships two weeks later. The favorite in the men's event is Michael Weiss, but barely so. A large contingent is pulling for Tim Goebel to steal the title from him this year. As the U.S.'s current king of the quad Goebel has the technical ammunition to blow Weiss out of the arena but on the artistic side he still has a ways to go. Only two U.S. men will be going to Worlds this years, and it looks like Goebel and Weiss will be the two. Fighting for third we expect will be Trifun Zivanovic, Matt Savoie and Damon Allen. Savoie and Allen placed fourth and sixth, respectively, last year. Shepherd Clark, who placed fifth last year, is being much hyped for a gem encrusted long program costume, reportedly valued at $100,000, but we do not expect him to be a serious contender for the bronze.

Internet Triple Challenge 1999-2000 Dateline, Daytona Beach, FL: 10/4/98 - The interpretive free skate portion of the competitoin began with Timothy Goebel skating to some sort of snappy piece of music. He attempted the quad salchow, but fell on it, and popped the triple loop, but landed the triple flip and a triple toe. A respectable performance, but not awe-inspiring. He received technical merit scores of mostly 5.2s (and one 5.3), and for presentation, mostly 5.2s with one 5.1 and one 5.3. Rudy Galindo followed, skating to
1998 U.S. Nationals Diary Todd has been named to the US Olympic team along with michael weiss. Todd was in the first group to take the ice, skating fifth. http://www.debwalsh.com/toddehome/natl1998.html
Extractions: Philadelphia, PA The afternoon concluded with the introduction to the audience of the selected Olympic team, complete with the Olympic theme played live by the Marine Corps Band. Todd was the last of the team to be introduced and came out to center ice dressed in the Walk on the Wild Side costume (a hint as to what he had been intending to skate in the second act!) As he took his final bows, he was postively beaming, a reflection of his happiness at finally going to an Olympics as the reigning National Champion. Thursday, January 8, 1998 Philadelphia, PA Preliminary report by Deb Walsh; a more complete report will follow from Fran Todd spent his practice session focussing on jumps, primarily the quad. His most successful attempt came during the warmup session (not the warmup just before his free skate), where he landed a perfect quad toe, followed by a quad toe/double toe combination. During the warmup just prior to his free skate, he attempted another quad, and managed a fairly spectacular fall on live television. The Men's Free Skate was shown on live TV on ABC-TV. Todd attempted a quad early in his routine; while he completed the four clean revolutions, he couldn't hang on to his edge and fell on the landing. He did land six triples, including a triple axel in the last 10 seconds of the program.

Extractions: RAY SUAREZ: Athletes from 78 countries will participate in tonight's opening ceremonies at the salt lake city winter Olympics. After they enter the stadium, a special honor guard of athletes will carry in the tattered American flag that flew over the remains of the World Trade Center after the September 11 attacks. The flag was to be hoisted and flown throughout the games, but today officials said it is too delicate to withstand the expected high winds. Several days ago, I had a chance to talk with three members of the U.S. Olympic team about their sports and the games. Here is that conversation: RAY SUAREZ: Michael Weiss is a second time Olympian; he's a member of the men's figure skating team; he lives in northern Virginia. Leanne Parsley's sport is skeleton, a sledding event, the sport makes a return to the Olympics this year. It was last contested in the 1948 games. This is Miss Parsley's first Olympics. She is a nurse and firefighter in Ohio. Ann Swisshelm is say first time Olympian; she's a member of the U.S. curling team. Until recently, she worked in sales and marketing in Chicago. Well Michael Weiss, since you're the old veteran of our panel, you're going to your second Olympics. How is that different from the first time?

Extractions: Comments: plaidder@mindspring.com So here's the second annual Plaidder Awards: Liza was almost as angry with the judges for sleazing Weiss onto the Olympic team as she was with the Supreme Court for sleazing Dubya into the White House, and that's saying summat. Especially since it meant that Matt Savoie, who rightfully trounced Weiss at the nationals last year and whose artistry certainly beat the pants off Weiss's in this year's free skate, does not make the Olympic team. ALWAYS THE BRIDESMAID AWARD: To Angela Nicodinov, SECOND ANNUAL FRANK SINATRA MEMORIAL I DID IT MY WAY AWARD: To Michelle Kwan, who shocked many of her criticsincluding meby pulling out a performance worthy of her reputation and abilities, despite not having a coach and having switched choreographers. I guess she doesn't need no steenking Frank Carroll. Ah well. More for Angela. She also earned this award by being the only skater who wore boots during her "little informal chat" interview for ABC Sports. For some reason, the producers built this set that looks like a barn painted to be the American flag and had all the skaters sit in it and give little spiels about themselves. They put all of them in the same general uniform: a white top and blue jeans. They also all had bare feet. I don't know exactly whose idea that was, but either Michelle Kwan is sensitive about her feet or she just decided she wasn't going to go along with this particular piece of bullshit, because she was the only one wearing shoes.
