Extractions: Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze, Russia "The Kid." Exhibition program, Champions on Ice tour, 2001. In a continuation of the Charlie Chaplin theme they established in the 2000-2001 season with their free program, Sikharulidze reprises his role as Chaplin, while Berezhnaya dons a cap to portray an urchin boy. Except for the throw triple, even the skating elements in the program are performed in character, such as a pair spin in which the urchin is following the adult around. Vladimir Besedin and Oleksey Polichuk, Ukraine "The Swan" by Saint-Saens. 2000. This is a two-man ice acrobatic team specializing in circus strength moves and comedy. They dress in women's feathery white swan costumes with headdresses, similar to Oksana Baiul's in her 1994 Olympic exhibition; Besedin, the larger of the two, wears falsies and also flesh-colored padding to support moves in which Polichuk stands on his back and shoulders while wearing skates. The humor is derived from the irony of two muscular men portraying swans.

Extractions: Tamara Moskvina is a reminder of how much water has flowed under the bridge since the Cold War melted away. The 60-year-old Russian is the world's most successful pairs figure-skating coach: a tiny woman with a large intellect and appetite for life who still gets a charge out of lacing up her skates and landing single axel jumps during training sessions. Working once with Soviet skaters and now, mostly, with Russians, she has coached three of the last five Olympic pairs champions and seven of the 15 pairs medalists since 1984. But since the last Winter Games in 1998, she has expanded her portfolio to include an American pair: Kyoko Ina and John Zimmerman. On Saturday night, the opening evening of figure skating in Salt Lake City, she was there in her familiar (low-altitude) position at the edge of the rink, living vicariously as her Russians and her Americans competed and competed very well in the short program.

Extractions: On to Nagano. The figure skaters have got the preliminary national championships out of the way and await the start of the Olympic Games. The runners-up, also all Russians, can gain some solace in the fact that gold medalists in the four events at Lillehammer, Norway, including Oksana Baiul of Ukraine, failed to win their European titles the month before. Baiul is now living comfortably off the fortune she made after her victory in Norway. Another skater formerly known as Oksana, now Pasha Grishuk, looks for her second gold medal in ice dancing with her partner, Yevgeni Platov. Grishuk changed her name late last year to avoid confusion with Baiul. Grishuk and Platov want to become the first ice dancers to win two Olympic golds, something the British pair Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean could not do.

Extractions: 1997 European Championships Prepared from notes provided by Klaus Reinhold-Kany, and from ISU press releases. 1997 EUROPEAN FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY FIVE History was made on the final day of the 1997 European Figure Skating Championships (Saturday) at the Palais Omnisport in Paris, France as Irina Slutskaya completed a clean sweep for Russia by winning the gold medal in the Ladies' competition. To date, no nation had ever won the gold medal in all four disciplines at the European Championships. Seventeen year old Slutskaya, the defending champion and world bronze medalist, skated last and won eight first places from the judges. Her program included six triples and although her landings were not all perfect, it was more than enough to take the gold and complete the set for Russia. Krisztina Czako placed fourth in the free skating but held on to her overnight second place to become the first Hungarian skater for 26 years to win a medal in the European ladies event. It was the 18 year old's first international medal success. The bronze medal went to 19 year old Yulia Lavrenchuk (UKR) who placed third in the free to move up from her fifth position in the short. For Lavrenchuk too, it was the first time on the podium at an ISU Championships. Russian national champion Maria Butyrskaya placed second in the free skating but her ninth place in the short program had left her too far adrift to make the podium and she finished fourth overall. Surya Bonaly (FRA), recovering from a major Achilles injury, has not recaptured the form that won her five European titles and could only finish tenth in the free, dropping to ninth place overall. Teammate Vanessa Gusmeroli, third overnight, also had a disappointing afternoon, placing ninth in the free to fall to sixth place overall.
Pravda.RU The Procession Of Victorious Russian Figure Skaters The Russian figure skating school reaffirmed its title as the best school row - alexei urmanov in 1994, Ilya Kulik in 1998 and alexei Yagudin in 2002. http://newsfromrussia.com/main/2004/03/29/53081.html
Extractions: The Russian figure skating school re-affirmed its title as the best school in the world at the world championship in Dortmund, Germany. Russian figure skaters won three out of four gold medals. Tatiana Totmianina and Maksim Marinin became champions in the pairs competition, Tatiana Navka and Roman Kostomarov won the ice dance competition, and Yevgeny Plushenko won the men's event. This was the sixth time that Russians have accomplished the outstanding feat of winning three gold medals. They achieved the same results in 1975 (Colorado Springs), 1985 (Tokyo), 1992 (Oakland), 1998 (Minneapolis) and 2002 (Nagano). However, in 1999 in Helsinki, Russian figure skaters won four gold medals. Russian figure skating has a long history. Nearly 100 years ago, Russians achieved their first big success in this sport. In 1908, Nikolai Panin-Kolomensky, a famous Russian figure skater and a world and European champion, won a gold metal at the Olympics in London. After the 1917 revolution, in early Soviet times, figure skating was overlooked in Russia. This sport was considered aristocratic and expensive primarily because of the need to construct rinks with artificial ice. But in the 1950s, the Soviet Union had developed into world power in sport, and figure skating was promoted. Numerous children's figure skating clubs opened and ice skating rinks were built. As a result, in 1964, 56 years after Panin-Kolmenkin's victory, Soviet figure skaters Lyudmila Belousova and Oleg Protopopov won the pairs title at the Olympics in Innsbruck. Four years later, they repeated their victory at the Grenoble Olympics. Since then, the laurels in figure skating have belonged to Soviet, and later Russian pairs. The glorious Irina Rodnina won Olympic gold three times (in 1972-1980) in pairs skating. Soviet pairs, too, became trendsetters in the ice dance competition in the 1970s. The skills of the legendary couple - Lyudmila Pakhomova and Alexander Gorshkov - are still marvelled by both experts and admirers all over the world.

Yagudin, Mishin'in çalýþtýrmasýyla, 1996'da 15 yaþýndayken, Dünya Gençler þampiyonluðuna ulaþtý. Bir sonraki yýl, 1997 Dünya Þampiyonasýnda Bronz madalyanýn sahibi oldu. Bu, Yagudin'in Artistik Patinaj'daki parlak döneminin baþlangýcýný oluþturdu. Yagudin, Artistik Patinaj'daki yeni hayatýna Tatiana Tarasova ile baþladý. Tarasova, Buz Dansý antrenörlüðünde efsanevî bir üne sahipti. Ilia Kulik'i Nagano Olimpiyatlarýnda þampiyon yapan oydu. Yagudin, yeni antrenörüyle birlikte New Jersey'e taþýndý.

News Article But Olympic Champion alexei urmanov was content to congratulate the new European Like urmanov, he completely stands in the tradition of Soviet skaters. http://www.kuliks-krew.com/Europeans95_files/German News Article.shtml
Extractions: translated by Luise Wuetschner With elan to the title, with caution on the pedestal, Ilia Kulik (17) is European Champion and together with Alexei Urmanov an outstanding representative of the Russian figure skating school. Carefully he climbed the pedestal with his skates. A wary step on the first step, then another on the highest point. He looked down to his feet, which he carefully straightened. When he had the feeling he would stand worthy to fit the occasion, he looked up. After that, Ilia Kulik didn´t move his head. Only his eyes traveled excitedly back and forth, as the Russian boy may have feared that there was somebody coming soon to take him off of this unusual and wonderful place. And there was somebody. But Olympic Champion Alexei Urmanov was content to congratulate the new European Champion and stand still on the lower step. Ilia would be "a worthy competitor," said the Europeans second place winner about his countryman, though from this you can hear that the opinion "worthy champion" Urmanov (21) wasn´t able to say. Kulik is only 17 years old; last year he was Junior World Champion, and in Dortmund he won his debut at an international senior championship. He even led after the short program, and in the free program, he showed six triple jumps. He´s already training the quad toe loop, and he announced "I will show it" at the world championships in March.

SINGLES: Form, style, technique, concentration and the ability to perform at peak ability under great pressure come to the fore in single's events. A Rising Star - Andrei Griazev From Blades On Ice - November But the skater, who was still coached by Tatiana Mishina and alexei Mishin atthe time, You just go out on the ice, nobody knows who you are, you skate, http://andrei.ice-fantasy.org/BOI01.php
Extractions: Andrei Griazev, 19, had a busy season when he unexpectedly made the Russian senior team after the sudden retirement of Alexander Abt. The young skater had previously only focused on junior competitions and didn't have any experience in international senior competitions, but once thrown into the cold water, he started to swim quickly. It meant that the athlete had to add two competitions to his roster. Coming out with a strong qualifying round at Europeans, where he placed third, he caught everyone's attention right away. The Tango short program was a disaster-he plummeted to 13th place-but he came back with a strong free skating to an entertaining selection of Fellini soundtracks to finish 8th. Griazev left Budapest the day of the exhibition to get ready for Russian Junior Nationals that started a few days later in Kazan. Griazev won the title and secured his ticket for The Hague. He showed up without coach Tatiana Tarasova, who was unable to come. Olympic Champion Alexei Yagudin, who had worked with him as well and travelled with him to the Junior competitions last fall, was on tour with Stars on Ice.
