Extractions: The fifth event in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating, the Cup of Russia, concluded in Moscow, Russia on Saturday (results and standings attached). In a fascinating domestic battle, Alexei Urmanov (RUS) took the lead in the men's short program. Urmanov was faultless, landing a triple axel-triple toeloop combination and a triple lutz in his classical program set to Bach. The 1994 Olympic champion earned one 5.9 for required elements and eight more for presentation. Second was training partner and world bronze medallist Evgeny Plushenko. He opened with an attempt at a quadruple toeloop but just two-footed the landing and then could only manage a double toeloop in combination with his triple axel. The third Russian, Alexander Abt (struggling with an ankle injury), stumbled after his unusual triple axel/triple loop combination and his planned quadruple toeloop ended up as a triple to put him in third place. In the free, Plushenko was the first to skate. Again, it was not to be a quad - instead a triple toeloop - but he then reeled off seven more triples, including a triple axel/double toeloop combination. He stuttered between a triple lutz and triple toeloop but included lightning fast step sequences and excellent spins to earn two 5.8s for technique and one 5.9 and four 5.8s for presentation. Abt followed but his injury clearly hampered him. He fell on a triple flip and stumbled slightly on the landings of two other jumps in his Egyptian program to stay in third.
International Skating Union The new season s ISU Grand Prix of skating opened in Detroit with the Thrifty Olympic champion alexei urmanov (RUS), also making a comeback from injury. http://ww2.isu.org/figure/events/9899/sa98.html
Extractions: The new season's ISU Grand Prix of Skating opened in Detroit with the Thrifty Car Rental Skate America International which concluded Saturday (results and standings attached). In the men's event, world champion Alexei Yagudin (RUS), now training with Tatiana Tarasova, started the season in outstanding form. He performed a clean short program, based on a circus theme, to take the lead. Olympic silver medallist Elvis Stojko (CAN), making his comeback from the groin injury that kept him off the ice for four months, was the only skater to attempt a quadruple jump (a new option this season) in the short program. He missed but did enough to finish second ahead of Michael Weiss (USA) and 1994 Olympic champion Alexei Urmanov (RUS), also making a comeback from injury. Urmanov skated first of the top contenders in the free program. He produced eight triples and unusual spin combinations in his Tango routine to prove that he is back to world class after missing an entire season. He earned one 5.9 and thirteen 5.8s. Stojko, not yet back to top form, again attempted a quad but two-footed the landing and struggled with other elements to slip to fourth place overall. Weiss also went for the quad and came close to landing it. He then reeled off eight triples in his new free program in one of the best performances of his career to win three 5.9s for technical merit and ten 5.8s and beat Urmanov. But Yagudin, skating next, eclipsed him with a program that included two triple/triple combinations. He earned a total of ten 5.9s to win overall in a 8:1 majority verdict over Weiss. Weiss tops the overall rankings after the first of the six events as this was a non-points scoring event for Yagudin.

Extractions: An Analysis of the Figure Skating Scoring System In recent months, there has been increasing controversy over the ordinal-based scoring system used in ISU ("amateur" or Olympic-eligible) figure skating competitions. The ordinal system is not well-understood by the general public, and this has led to some results at recent competitions that seem "wrong" (or at least surprising) to people who are not familiar with the details of how figure skating is scored. The argument I make in this article is that the problem is not so much with the scoring system itself indeed, from a statistical point of view it is technically superior to the alternatives that have been proposed but with the failure of the ISU and the media to adequately educate the public. How the ordinal system works The pairs and men's and ladies singles events each consist of two phases, a short program and a free skating program. In dance, there are two compulsory dances, an original dance, and a free dance. The placements of the skaters within each phase are determined independently of the other phases, and then combined by multiplying the placements by a weighting factor to arrive at the overall standings in the competition. The first critical point to understand about the figure skating scoring system is that the marks given to the skaters (on a scale of to 6) have no intrinsic meaning in themselves. Instead, each judge uses the total of their technical and presentation marks to indicate a ranking first, second, third, and so on for each skater relative to the other skaters in the event. It is these rankings, called

Extractions: AP SALT LAKE CITY (AP) With his bronzed breast plate and imaginary sword, Alexei Yagudin swashbuckled his way to perfection. And Olympic gold. Skating as the "Man in the Iron Mask," Yagudin left no doubt Thursday night, winning his duel with Russian teammate and rival Evgeni Plushenko. Tim Goebel finished third, the first time since 1992 an American man won a medal in the event. Yagudin received all 5.9s on the scoreboard except for four perfect 6.0s for artistry. No other man had ever earned more than one perfect mark at the Olympics. On this night, the figure skating world could celebrate a champion and forget about a judging controversy. "It was like in some good dream up there," said Yagudin, who was fifth in the Nagano Games, skating with a high fever. He also was plagued by injuries last season. "I was just thinking of the hard times I went through. Last season was like hell, but I am strong and I just showed that. "It is one of my best."
