On the strength of her athletic jumps, modern costumes, and inventive choreography she won gold medals at the Winter Olympic Games in 1928, 1932, and 1936. Henie later skated in ice shows and in motion pictures, inspiring many people to take up skating. American skater Dick Button , a five-time world champion (1948-1952) and two-time Olympic gold medalist (1948 and 1952), brought outstanding athleticism to skating. Along with inventing the flying camel sit spin, he was also the first skater to successfully complete a double axel and a triple jump in competition. Soviet skaters

History Skeletal remains with animal bone blades tied to the feet testify to skatingâs existence as early as 10,000 bc. These remains were found in peat bogs in The Netherlands. Scandinavia is called the mother of skating because of the sportâs popularity there, beginning around ad 1000. Ice skating was primarily a means of transportation at first, although documents from The Netherlands indicate that speed races were held in towns as early as the 15th century. A. Early Pioneers American athlete Jackson Haines is known as the father of modern figure skating. Haines was born in 1840 in New York City. After studying dance and ballet, he became a dancing master and applied his dancing techniques to figure skating. He performed around the world and became well known for his imaginative and artistic techniques. Hainesâs style was enthusiastically received in Europe and eventually became accepted internationally. The formation of national and international skating organizations began during the 1890s. In 1892 the International Skating Union (ISU) was established. Today the ISU defines the rules and sets performance standards for speed skating, figure skating, and ice dancing competitions. Also in the late 1800s the National Amateur Skating Association of the United States and the International Skating Union of America were founded. In 1921 national standards were set down for skating, and the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA) was formed to govern the sport in the United States, superseding the earlier organizations. Speed skating in the United States is governed by the United States International Speed Skating Association and the Amateur Speedskating Union of the United States, both of which are affiliated with the ISU.

Extractions: The show involves several different skating genres. Frenchman Philippe Candeloro is also a solo male skater. His specialty is character skating, and he has been praised for his skating routines based on music from the Godfather and Napoleon, although his 1993 performance as Conan the Barbarian complete with fake fur may have been taking it a little too far. Also on tap, the acrobatic and comedic duo Akop Manoukian and Armen Saakian, who have been partners since 1998 will entertain skating fans. Expect something slightly of the wall, as the pair performed "Austin Powers onIce" during the 2002 Ice Stars tour, dressing up as Austin and his nemesis Doctor Evil.
Extractions: The Figure skating reference article from the English Wikipedia on 24-Apr-2004 (provided by Fixed Reference : snapshots of Wikipedia from wikipedia.org) Figure skating is an ice skating sporting event where individuals and mixed couples compete to try to perform the most spectacular and accurately-performed elements while skating to music. Figure skaters use skates which differ slightly from hockey skates, to perform spins, jumps, and other "moves" on the ice, often to music. There are international competitions for figure skating, such as the World Championships and figure skating is also an official event in the Winter Olympics Table of contents showTocToggle("show","hide") 1 Jumps 7 See also: There are six major jumps in figure skating. All six are landed on a right back outside edge by righthanded skaters, but have different takeoffs, by which they may be distinguished. The two categories of jumps are toe jumps and edge jumps. Toe jumps are launched by tapping the toe pick of one skate into the ice, and include (in order of difficulty from easiest to hardest): Toe loops, which take off from the back outside edge of the right foot and are launched by the left toe pick (toe walleys are similar, but take off from the back inside edge of the right foot);

Extractions: It was a much anticipated show, since it was announced that three times World Champion Evgeni Plushenko would appear on the ice, the first time since his injury and withdrawal from 2005 World Championship in Moscow. Plushenko, an absolute favourite of the St. Petersburg audience, and his coach Alexei Mishin had promised to choreograph two quite special programs especially for this event. They kept their promise and justified all the expectations. Actually, this year there were two shows, on June 2nd and 3rd. As those were special events and not a part of a tour, there were no group entries, however the organizers tried to think of something that could make the skating show look more unusual. As a result, the show combined skating with magic tricks, although it was questionably if that was a good idea. The June 2nd show was more 'official', with many VIP guests (including St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matvienko and The President of Russian Figure Skating Federation Mr. Piseev) who delivered speeches and presented awards to skaters, live singers (Nikolai Baskov and Zara) and some entertaining entries, like

Extractions: Venues: The smooth, soft contours of "White Ring," named for the shape of its roof, were designed to symbolize the beauty and grace of figure skating. On the inside, bright lights encircle the roof while the cozy elliptical arena is ringed by spectator seating. During the first 10 days of the Olympics, the arena will see figure skating competitions for the pairs, men and dance. During the final five days, ladies figure skating will share time with short-track speedskating. In the 1600s, legend has it, two famous samurai warlords fought a series of brutal conflicts for supremacy of the Nagano region. They met in hand-to-hand combat just four kilometers from the venue. 1994 Golds: Alexei Urmanov of Russia (men's); Oksana Baiul of the Ukraine (women's); Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov of Russia (pairs); Oksana Gritshuk and Yevgeny Platov of Russia (ice dancing). Critical Moment: Considered the most difficult jump to perform, the Axel is sought by skaters and regarded by judges. A clean triple Axel has been landed by only two women in competition; a quadruple has yet to be, by man or woman.

Ice Skating International: Online International competition returned to Halifax, NS with 1997 Skate Canada. Still to be heard from is alexei urmanov, who had an excellent chance to win http://www.iceskatingintnl.com/archive/results/sk8can97.htm
Extractions: Skate Canada 1997 Halifax, NS Ladies Results Men's Results Pairs Results Dance Results Overview International competition returned to Halifax, NS with 1997 Skate Canada. Halifax was the site of the 1990 World Champions and after seven years the arena is a lot older and a lot newer. The seating area and other parts of the building are showing their age, but renovations are under way, and luxury boxes are being added. Halifax will be the site of the first Four Continents Championships in February 1999. Although clearly the front runner, it is nevertheless still to early to mail Elvis the Olympic gold medal. Still to be heard from is Alexei Urmanov, who had an excellent chance to win the gold in Lausanne until his groin injury knocked his out of the competition. It remains to be seen how his physical condition will play out this season. Then there is the fact that Stojko is not invincibly consistent. He does make his share of errors, and a significant error in either the short program or the long could well spell disaster for him with so many strong skaters waiting in line for him to fall. Kasakova and Dmitriev were the only team here this week which has a serious chance to medal at the Olympics. They would have an even better chance if Dmitiriev would lose 20 pounds. They clearly have the edge in the second mark over both Woetzel and Steuer, and Eltsova and Bushkov, but will have to bring up their technical quality a notch in order to move up (assuming of course their competition doesn't help them by falling down). Although they are not likely to challenge for a medal in Nagano, two teams that skated here that have improved considerably since the spring are the French team of Abitbol and Bernadis, and the Polish team of Zagorska and Siudek.
