Extractions: @import url(style/default.css); kiat.net where are you :: home Olympics Sports Figure Skating OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1908 Like many winter sports, FIGURE SKATING 's roots grew from necessity. As a mode of transportation for warfare and hunting in Northern Europe, skating was a swift way to cross frozen lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. Warriors and hunters crafted makeshift skates of reindeer antlers or elk bones, and later iron and steel. By the 16th century, skaters were transporting goods across frozen waterways. In 1892, the International Skating Union (ISU) was founded. Six years later, the first ISU-sanctioned event was held, and organisers hoped it might soon become an official Olympic sport. Because competitions could be held indoors, figure skating was the first winter sport included in the Olympic Games when it was added to the Olympic program for the 1908 Summer Olympic Games in London. The singles and pairs competitions also appeared in the 1920 Antwerp Summer Games.

Extractions: Russia's Ilia Kulik, center, Canada's Elvis Stojko, left, and France's Philippe Candeloro Ilya Kulik soared through a quadruple jump to take the men's figure skating gold medal. He completed a near perfect performance in the free skate to earn Russia's second successive men's figure skating title. He had earlier won the short programme. Elvis Stojko of Canada won the silver despite a flat programme and Philippe Candeloro of France took the bronze, with one 6.0 for presentation. Britain's Steven Cousins finished seventh, while American Todd Eldredge had a rough night and fell to fourth. Kulik, 20, became the first skater since Dick Button in 1948 to take the gold in his initial Olympics, and the third straight skater from a former Soviet republic to take the title. He did so with a marvellous set of jumps, highlighted by a massive quadruple toe loop and two solid triple axles, one in combination. In all, he landed eight triples and the quad, and made them all look easy. His footwork to Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" was playful and his spins precise.

Extractions: Saturday, May 5, 2001 Each year since 1999, the Richmond Hill Mayor's Gala has been held to salute the wealth of figure skating talent in the town of Richmond Hill, Ontario, which is Elvis' home town. The event also acts as a fundraiser for the Elvis Stojko Bursary, a scholarship-like program Elvis himself created that provides young skaters (six are chosen each year) financial awards to aid in their training. New members are also inducted into the Richmond Hill Sports Hall of Fame, with Elvis having been the first inductee at the inaugural event in 1999. My friends and I have attended the Gala each year since its inception, and it has become a favorite place to see Elvis perform. The event is held in the Elgin Barrow Arena, a small rink that holds approximately 500 or so people. Since the show is usually general admission, we have sat in the same seats every year and each year, we have been lucky enough to receive a bit of attention from Elvis. :) In the first year, my friends Lisa and Moyra received hugs during Elvis' performance of What I Like About You ; the second year, it was Moyra again and another good friend, Dawn-Denise. This year, Moyra made it a three-peat, and Lynn and I were the recipients of a "group hug". :)

This was known as the Figure Skating Department of the Amateur Skating Association of Canada and the initial members were Ottawa 's Minto Club and the Earl Grey Club in Montreal. The first official annual figure skating championships of Canada were held in the same year under the new organization. Louis Rubenstein was the first president, a position he held until 1930. The department became known as the Canadian Figure Skating Association (CFSA) in 1939 and in 1947 the CFSA joined the International Skating Union and dropped its membership in the Amateur Skating Association of Canada. In 2000 the organization changed its name to Skate Canada. In 1947 the CFSA national office was set up in Ottawa by Charles H. Cumming, the Association's Secretary-Treasurer. Kwan and Elvis Stojko are finding they have a competitive advantage by working with a team of specialists that includes Helen James, Physical Therapist, Certified Advanced Rolfer and Professor Emerita of Physical Therapy at California State University Fresno. Olympic MD, Dr. Karlis Ullis, at the Sports Medicine and Anti-Aging Medical Group in Santa Monica, Ca., "Athletes always need help with chronic injuries, muscular strains and overuse. The Olympic athletes wouldn't have as many injuries if they had appropriate soft tissue therapy," says Dr. Ullis. "Rolfing is valuable for athletes in high level competition to address the build up of scar tissue and disarrangement of myofascial tissue that occurs from training, competition and injury." Dr. Ullis has provided medical expertise to athletes at five Olympic games, including Lillehammer, Albertville, and Barcelona, in the fields of figure skating, cross country skiing, bobsleigh, biathlon, track and field and other sports.
