Extractions: In November, 1997, we were fortunate to be able to interview Gerard Chataigneau, well-known skating photographer and friend of Elvis. Thank you for agreeing to be interviewed for our Elvis page. Elvis fans are curious about the man who photographs Elvis and other skaters. Are you a skater yourself? Yes, I am. Very early after I learned how to skate I became interested in ice dancing. I joined an adult dance club in Toronto. I met my wife there. We both skate for fun and fitness when done seriously, ice dancing is very good for fitness. Were you a skater first, or a photographer first? And how did the two come to be combined? I was already very much involved in figure skating when I decided to approach photography professionally. It is my interest in the sport that motivated me to take pictures, because I could see the possibility of capturing so many beautiful images. How did you first meet Elvis, and how did you first begin photographing him? The first time I had a real conversation with Elvis was, I think, in February 1992. We were both in the same plane on our way to Albertville. Mark Janoschak and Jacqueline Peter were also with us. Very few passengers were on that flight, so we gathered and we had a bit of a conversation. Elvis had a new camera with him, he showed it to me and I explained a few things about photography. I was very impressed by Elvis, he was always so nice with everybody, not a show off at all, very quiet and very serious. The year before he had accomplished the first quad combination in history, yet he was unpretentious in his ways.

BY ROBERT SULLIVAN e's 25, collects stuffed animals and still lives at home, but he may be the toughest skater ever to enter the rink. He's tougher than Todd Eldredge, tougher than the Russians, tougher than Tonya Harding. Consider: the big rumor in Canada says that last summer Elvis Stojko, figure skater, 5 ft. 7 in., 158 lbs., got into a bar brawl with Eric Lindros, goonish hockey star, 6 ft. 4 in., 236 lbs.and that Lindros got the short end of the stick. Never mind that everyone denies it happened. The point is, people believe it might have happened. It's like Tiger taking out Tyson. Stojko forces people to believe. He's the unlikeliest skating star, a short, thickly muscled man with propulsive leaping ability but a B-movie aesthetic. Judges have always disapproved of his body type, his haircut and, above all, his kickboxer style. But he has worn them down, and today he's their reigning world champ. Elvis' fortitude is bred in the bones. His mother was the last of eight children in a Hungarian family, his father the first of nine in a Yugoslav household. They fled communist tanks in the 1950s, landed in Canada, met each other in Toronto and married. Upon the birth of her third child, Irene Stojko happened to be gonzo over Elvis Presley. She had already demonstrated a flair for tributedaughter Elizabeth salutes the British Queen, and as for son Attila, well ... and so she named the new kid for the King.

I mean it's a situation where it wasn't going as planned all week and I mean I landed it the last two days and it just clicked in and just to put it in in the present situation and I think it's just more miles. It's just miles in the program and getting the trust back in my body. Elvis: Yeah. And you know there's a lot of guys, I know the Chinese skaters have been doing them the last couple of years and doing them under pressure is the key. And now that we've got it, it's done. Now it has to be done. Once it's done in the program once, then you know you've got to put it in. You know, all year I've been playing catch up and trying to ...you know... I've started way behind the rest of the field and now I feel like I'm almost there catching up with the rest of the pack and going at my own pace. I can't push myself beyond what I'm capable at this point and I feel good about what I did and we'll move on for tomorrow.

Elvis Stojko Shows Courage In The Face Of Pain stojko has competed in Men s Singles figure skating for most of his life. I think that elvis stojko is a hero. He has a great skating ability, http://www.snn-rdr.ca/snn/old/oct99/oct99/stojko.htm
Extractions: Portage la Prairie, Manitoba A hero is defined as a man who is admired and emulated for his achievements and qualities. Elvis Stojko is undoubtedly one of Canada's most heroic athletes. Stojko has competed in Men's Singles figure skating for most of his life. He serves as a hero to many aspiring skaters, as well as those who appreciate the sport. What makes him a hero? The same characteristics that helped him in his fight to the top: ability, determination, and attitude. The biggest thing that brought Stojko to the top rankings of Figure Skating in the world was his ability. At the 1994 World Figure Skating Championships, he landed the first-ever quadruple jump in combination. This jump takes immense strength and ability. Stojko also performs some of the most difficult foot sequences in competition. His ability is something that he can rely on, however, it isn't the feature that makes him a hero. Even those with the best of ability falter occasionally. We may think that star athletes never fail, but this has been proven wrong repeatedly. Elvis Stojko - winner of the silver medal at the 1998 Nagano Olympics Ability is important in sports, but without determination, ability is futile. Stojko is extremely determined. When others predict failure, he proves them wrong and overcomes adversity. He endured a foot injury during the 1995 season. The media expected that he would lose his World Title, but, as he often does, he fought back and regained the title, foot injury and all.
