Extractions: Just announced three-time World Champion, two-time Olympic Silver Medallist, and seven-time Canadian Champion Elvis Stojko has been added to the star-studded cast of Holiday Ice Dreams, which skates into the Sovereign Bank Arena on November 19. In 1991, Elvis became the first man to ever perform a quadruple toe loop, double toe loop combination jump, in competition. In 1997, Elvis again made Canadian history by becoming the first and only man to perform a quadruple toe loop, triple toe loop combination jump, in competition. Elvis has been involved in a number of shows and tours. Since 1994 Stojko has been a leading skating star for the Tom Collins Tour of World Figure Skating Champions, touring over 50 U.S. Cities each year. From 1994 to 1998 he also starred in his own tour across Canada called the Elvis Tour of Champions. Stojko is a National Spokesperson for the Think First Foundation of Canada, a charity that is committed to the prevention of spinal cord and brain injuries of young people through education. The Governor General of Canada, in January of 1996, presented Elvis with one of the highest awards in this country, the Meritorious Service Decoration, which is awarded in recognition of a deed or activity performed in a highly professional manner or of a very high standard that brings benefit or honor to Canada.

Rainbow Ice - Mary Louise Adams elvis stojko, who succeeded him, has longterm contracts with McCain s, McDonald s, While hockey and figure skating both take place on the ice, http://www.plover.com/rainbowice/mla2.html
Extractions: from Borderlines , No. 46 (April 1998), pp. 12-15 I first noticed it about ten years ago not on the ice but in an issue of Saturday Night magazine. After a childhood and adolescence spent immersed in figure skating, I had been away from the sport, as participant and spectator, for a number of years. I certainly wasn't prepared for an image of Kurt Browning, a figure skater, done up as the epitome of urban cool cocky black beret, tight jeans, leather bomber jacket. The adjective used to describe him was "macho." I had never seen the words "macho" and "figure skating" in such close proximity. Five years later, the "macho turn" in skating was well underway. In 1994, the Globe and Mail included Browning on its year-end list of the 25 most powerful personalities in Canadian sport. Not only had he won four world titles and landed the first quadruple jump in competition, apparently he'd also "wiped away the stereotype of effeminate male skaters." Although the pronouncement was a bit premature, it is true that since Browning became world champion in 1989, male skaters have been taken more seriously. Browning, for instance, was the first male skater to land endorsement contracts with major corporations such as Toshiba and Coca-Cola. Elvis Stojko, who succeeded him, has long-term contracts with McCain's, McDonald's, Canon and Roots. Much of this commercial success comes from winning world championships. But Brian Orser was also a world champion and no comparable endorsement contracts ever came his way, suggesting that there is more to gaining corporate support than medals.

Kulik Performs 'best' For Olympic Figure Skating Gold The silver medal went to injured threetime world champion elvis stojko of Canada, The figure skating competition continues Sunday with the ice dancing http://www.shinmai.co.jp/oly-eng/19980214/0004.htm
Extractions: 19:00- Start Ilia Kulik of Russia pulled off the best free program of the season Saturday night to claim an overwhelming victory in the Nagano Olympic men's figure skating competition. ''It was truly the best skating. I'm proud I'm the Olympic champion,'' said Kulik, who nailed a quadruple jump in one of the few error-free performances of the night at the White Ring ice arena in southern Nagano. The 20-year-old Moscow native, up first in the last group of skaters, opened his free program with a quad toe loop and reeled off eight triples, including one pair in combination and another in sequence, to earn first place votes from all nine judges. Kulik, who also led after Thursday's short program, received seven 5.9s and two 5.8s out of a possible 6.0 points for presentation while scoring between 5.9s and 5.7s for technical merit. The world silver medalist in 1996 was one of two skaters who performed a four-revolution jump Saturday night.

Extractions: 19:00- Start Ilia Kulik of Russia conjured up a magical performance Thursday, taking the lead after the short program of the Olympic men's figure skating competition in Nagano. The 20-year-old Moscow native, who sat out the European championships last month due to a back injury, opened his routine with a clean triple axel-triple toe loop combination and went on to complete a flawless performance at the White Ring ice arena. Kulik, winner of the ISU Champions Series Final held in Germany last December, set the standard early as he skated sixth out of 29 competitors and held onto the lead as reigning world champion Elvis Stojko of Canada and the other medal hopefuls followed. After nailing the triple lutz and double axel and spinning and stepping to the rhythm of ''Revolution,'' Kulik received five 5.9s and four 5.8s out of a possible 6.0 points for presentation while scoring 5.7s and 5.8s for required elements. Five of the nine judges gave the Russian first-place votes while the rest were split between Stojko and American Todd Eldredge.

Ice Skating International: Online International competition returned to Halifax, NS with 1997 Skate Canada. Going into this competition elvis stojko was already viewed as the front http://www.iceskatingintnl.com/archive/results/sk8can97.htm
Extractions: Skate Canada 1997 Halifax, NS Ladies Results Men's Results Pairs Results Dance Results Overview International competition returned to Halifax, NS with 1997 Skate Canada. Halifax was the site of the 1990 World Champions and after seven years the arena is a lot older and a lot newer. The seating area and other parts of the building are showing their age, but renovations are under way, and luxury boxes are being added. Halifax will be the site of the first Four Continents Championships in February 1999. Although clearly the front runner, it is nevertheless still to early to mail Elvis the Olympic gold medal. Still to be heard from is Alexei Urmanov, who had an excellent chance to win the gold in Lausanne until his groin injury knocked his out of the competition. It remains to be seen how his physical condition will play out this season. Then there is the fact that Stojko is not invincibly consistent. He does make his share of errors, and a significant error in either the short program or the long could well spell disaster for him with so many strong skaters waiting in line for him to fall. Kasakova and Dmitriev were the only team here this week which has a serious chance to medal at the Olympics. They would have an even better chance if Dmitiriev would lose 20 pounds. They clearly have the edge in the second mark over both Woetzel and Steuer, and Eltsova and Bushkov, but will have to bring up their technical quality a notch in order to move up (assuming of course their competition doesn't help them by falling down). Although they are not likely to challenge for a medal in Nagano, two teams that skated here that have improved considerably since the spring are the French team of Abitbol and Bernadis, and the Polish team of Zagorska and Siudek.
Stojko And Doyle - Bringing Martial Arts To Ice The style is what brought elvis to Hung Gar Kung Fu. stojko who has a black beltin Karate fell in And elvis strength was his skating, said Doyle. http://www.angelfire.com/ca4/GlenDoyle/spotlight.html
Extractions: Have you ever wondered how Elvis Stojko has incorporated his study and training of martial arts into his skating? Glen Doyle, author of "The Martial Artist's Way", Eivis' Sifu (pronounced Seefu) guides us through the world of martial arts and gives us insight and understanding into the impact and influence it has had on Stojko's skating. The style is what brought Elvis to Hung Gar Kung Fu. Stojko who has a black belt in Karate fell in love with the style when he was first introduced to Kung Fu by Doyle eight years ago who also trained his brother. Glen explains, "his brother came to me and said, 'my brother's a figure skater and he's thinking of putting martial arts on ice but his style is very linear and it's kind of hard to match it with the blade.' Skating is very circular," said Doyle. Right away upon seeing Glen demonstrate some moves in Kung Fu, Elvis was able to envision how he could apply it to his skating and the ice. "Most Hung Gar Kung Fu is based on circular motion and movement. Rather than meet an opposing force head on matching force with force sometimes we redirect the energy. Now the reason hung gar kung fu is thought of as a circle being no beginning and no end, that means in a student/teacher point of view that you're always learning you've never learned it all," said Glen. "In kung fu, there are no rankings, they don't have belt colours because they don't believe there's a specific goal to get to you're always going for something later. They're always learning. My Sifu is 83 years old, the man who taught me and he says himself, he still learns everyday. So the no beginning and no end means that you're always searching, you're always striving to get that next level up and once you get to that level you always strive for the next one and the next one and you never ever quit," Doyle said.

Elvis Stojko Gallery stojko, a man who, while pursuing his love of competitive figure skating, With the event of elvis retirement from competitive skating on March 12, http://lt.tripod.com/tr/directory/_h_/members.tripod.com/elvisstojkogallery/
Extractions: to what has become my personal tribute to a very special person Elvis Stojko, a man who, while pursuing his love of competitive figure skating, changed the face of the sport itself. Elvis is responsible for some of the most pivotal moments in figure skating history, not the least of which were the first quadruple-double and quadruple-triple jump combinations. When he first achieved the quad-triple at the Champions Series Final in early 1997, it was unique to him alone; barely five years later at the Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, the top men in the field were expected to complete this very combination if they sought a chance at the gold and this elevation of the technical aspect of the sport can be directly traced to Elvis. I first discovered Elvis in 1994, when I saw him compete in Lillehammer, Norway at the Winter Olympics, representing his home country of Canada. He appealed to me immediately he loved to skate to unconventional stuff, had a really different style, and from the profiles I'd seen, was a really cool guy. I didn't really follow figure skating as avidly as I do now until the 1997-98 season, but when I'd hear of him skating in something, I'd watch. I especially loved his long program to the music from Dragonheart from the 1996-97 season and I slowly began to get hooked in even more. Getting on line in January of 1998 helped alot. I was able to find out alot more about him, and my interest grew.
