Extractions: By Mike Murphy, Post contributor A major upset in the pairs event and an energizing, crowd-pleasing performance by former U.S. Olympian Elizabeth Manley highlighted Sunday's finale of the Master Cup. The Master Cup was the final half of the $500,000 1997 U.S. Open Professional Figure Skating Championships held at the Crown. The pairs team of Elena Leonova and Andrei Khvalko of Russia, who had to qualify for the Master Cup on Friday, dazzled the crowd to take first place with 276 points. It is considered a major upset because this is the first time the pair has competed together and because they edged out Radka Kovarikova and Rene Novotny of the Czech Republic (272.9). Kovarikova and Novotny were the 1995 world pairs champions and finished fourth in the 1992 Winter Olympics. The pair, also husband and wife, said they performed so well because of their innovative and fun style of skating. ''The difference is that we always try to do something new,'' said Leonova. ''A lot of pairs do the same things, they do the same lifts and jumps. We just wanted to go out and show what we could do and have fun.'' The team has toured Russia and North America in professional shows and performs with Disney on Ice in ''The Spirit of Pocahontas.''

Iceskate.Net - Olympics The first Olympic figure skating events were held in London in 1908. Men,Scott Hamilton (USA), Brian Orser (CAN), jozef sabovcik (CZE) http://www.iceskate.net/olympics.html
Extractions: There are two classes of figure skaters; Olympic eligible (the old "amateur" status) and not Olympic eligible (professionals). Olympic eligible skaters are restricted to skating in events that are sanctioned by their federation and/or the International Skating Union. Professional skaters can skate in anything *but* sanctioned events (with the exception of the occasional sanctioned pro-ams, such as the Hersheys Kisses or Ultimate 4 competitions). Shortly before the 1994 Olympics the ISU temporarily opened up reinstatement for professional skaters (which is why you saw Boitano, Browning, and others skating in Lillihammer), then closed it again in 1995. The only skater who opted for reinstatement and remained Olympic eligible after the 1994 Olympics was Artur Dmitriev. He and partner Natalia Mishkutenok won the pairs competition at the 1992 Olympics and placed second at the 1994 Olympics. Mr. Dmitriev then returned with a new partner, Oksana Kasakova, to win the pairs title again at the 1998 Olympics. The first Olympic figure skating events were held in London in 1908. Figure skating was not listed on Olympic programs until the first Winter Olympic games in 1924.

Extractions: Tonya began skating at the age of 3. On a trip to the Lloyd Center, Tonya watched other kids skating and wanted to try it. When she first stepped on the ice she made piles of shavings and ate them. Once Tonya started to skate she was skating circles around other kids. She was a natural at the age of 5. After a few times Tonya loved skating so much she had to be dragged off the ice. Soon after she began skating, Tonya got the attention of Diane Rawlinson, who had been the former star of Ice Capades. Diane went on to become Tonya's coach, and remained so, for several years. Tonya won her first competition at the age of 5. By the age of 8, Tonya did her first triple jump, quite an amazing feat for an 8 year old. By 12, Tonya began experimenting with what would one day be her trademark: the Triple Axle. By this age she had already won several medals, in numerous competitions.
