Iceskate.Net - Olympics The first Olympic figure skating events were held in London in 1908. Men, Brian Boitano (USA), Brian Orser (CAN), viktor petrenko (RUS) http://www.iceskate.net/olympics.html
Extractions: There are two classes of figure skaters; Olympic eligible (the old "amateur" status) and not Olympic eligible (professionals). Olympic eligible skaters are restricted to skating in events that are sanctioned by their federation and/or the International Skating Union. Professional skaters can skate in anything *but* sanctioned events (with the exception of the occasional sanctioned pro-ams, such as the Hersheys Kisses or Ultimate 4 competitions). Shortly before the 1994 Olympics the ISU temporarily opened up reinstatement for professional skaters (which is why you saw Boitano, Browning, and others skating in Lillihammer), then closed it again in 1995. The only skater who opted for reinstatement and remained Olympic eligible after the 1994 Olympics was Artur Dmitriev. He and partner Natalia Mishkutenok won the pairs competition at the 1992 Olympics and placed second at the 1994 Olympics. Mr. Dmitriev then returned with a new partner, Oksana Kasakova, to win the pairs title again at the 1998 Olympics. The first Olympic figure skating events were held in London in 1908. Figure skating was not listed on Olympic programs until the first Winter Olympic games in 1924.

Extractions: @import url(style/default.css); kiat.net where are you :: home Olympics Sports Figure Skating OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1908 Like many winter sports, FIGURE SKATING 's roots grew from necessity. As a mode of transportation for warfare and hunting in Northern Europe, skating was a swift way to cross frozen lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. Warriors and hunters crafted makeshift skates of reindeer antlers or elk bones, and later iron and steel. By the 16th century, skaters were transporting goods across frozen waterways. In 1892, the International Skating Union (ISU) was founded. Six years later, the first ISU-sanctioned event was held, and organisers hoped it might soon become an official Olympic sport. Because competitions could be held indoors, figure skating was the first winter sport included in the Olympic Games when it was added to the Olympic program for the 1908 Summer Olympic Games in London. The singles and pairs competitions also appeared in the 1920 Antwerp Summer Games.

Extractions: This year there has been much moaning and wringing of hands over the crisis in basketball, especially after Michael Jordan announced the inevitable. But I'd like to talk about an athlete who has been profoundly influenced by another MJ. His name is Viktor Petrenko, and he is my favorite male figure skater. As has become frightfully apparent, the popularity of Olympic-style figure skating has skyrocketed since Tonya Harding plotted the iron piping of Nancy Kerrigan's knee nearly six years ago. Live shows are more packed than ever, and network television competition coverage and skating specials have enjoyed healthy ratings. Since figure skating requires such grueling, isolated hours of training in order to produce perfect, graceful moves on the ice - it has always risked becoming tedious - beautiful yet restrained performances were set to the same standard classical pieces. No longer. Luckily, before anyone got too bored (come on, this is a television-driven sport we're talking about, after all), someone figured out how to make it more "fun."

Oksana Baiul - Then & Now Once Oksana put those skates on her feet, she rarely left the ice. It was then that a fellow Ukrainian skater, viktor petrenko, suggested that Oksana http://www.viewzone.com/oksana.html
Extractions: by Dan Eden first heard of Oksana Baiul in 1994 when she won the Gold Medal for figure skating at the Olympics. Within a few months, Simsbury, Connecticut was alive with opinion over the proposal to build a huge skating rink complex on some vacant tobacco land in the north end of town. Oksana had just won the World Championship in figure skating. Her name and story were linked with the skating rink much like an ex-"M*A*S*H" actor is used to sell Fords. Figure Skating rates second as the most popular sport in America. Football is number one. The rise in popularity of this largely spectator sport in the U.S. has been attributed to many things. It began with what has been jokingly called "the whack heard 'round the world" - the Tanya Harding incident - and was fueled by Fox Network's acquisition of NFL football from long standing CBS Sports. To fill the void, CBS ran its coverage of figure skating in early evening, family primetime. Its popularity and market share rapidly soared. Figure skating is an art that blends the strength and flexibility of ballet with the meditative focus of karate. Incredibly, even our national sport, baseball, doesn't come close to the ongoing popularity with both watching and participating in fun on the ice. But it wasn't always so. The proposed skating rink in Simsbury was part of a national trend to build rinks and skating complexes in response to the public's appetite. Newly built rinks were seeing their capacity reached with amateur and professional hockey and multi-level skating classes. Skating was replacing ballet or dance as a means of teaching grace to America's girls. And for every would-be Ice Princess, there was an ideal role model. Oksana Baiul seemingly came from nowhere to win the most coveted prize. Her youth and mastery of skating captivated young and old alike. This Cinderella persona was a role that was graciously assumed by Oksana. The growing public interest in skating that Oksana brought to America benefited the entire industry.
