All six are landed on a right back outside edge by righthanded skaters, but have different takeoffs, by which they may be distinguished. The two categories of jumps are toe jumps and edge jumps. Toe jumps are launched by tapping the toe pick of one skate into the ice, and include (in order of difficulty from easiest to hardest): Toe loops, which take off from the back outside edge of the right foot and are launched by the left toe pick (toe walleys are similar, but take off from the back inside edge of the right foot);

He won the British Empire title, against Jack Beresford , in Hamilton Ontario in 1930 and became a Canadian citizen. He held his Australian qualification for Olympic purposes and returned to Los Angeles to retain his title. He then turned professional, and retired undefeated at the start of the war. B. 1972-02-22, Berlin, Germany At Salt Lake City, Pechstein was the only favourite, but Gretha Smit of the Netherlands had decided to come down from her marathon skating to try the longest Olympic distance. At her first serious race, she broke the 6:50 barrier. Pechstein again had to defeat a new world record to take her third gold medal, but now she did it with a bit more difference. Despite being 3 seconds down with 1200 m to go, she defeated the Dutch woman by over 2 seconds.

Extractions: November 24-30, 1995 You can't watch TV these days without seeing figure skaters. If you're like many viewers, you can't watch male skaters ah, those sequined Adonises with their tight butts and triple jumps without wondering: gay, or just Russian? Chances are, you'll never know for sure unless you're watching Doug Mattis. This 29-year-old Philadelphia native is one of American skating's hottest properties right now, and he's out. What does it mean to be "out" in this balletic, beauty-conscious sport, where all the men endure homophobic charges of effeminacy? Mattis' guest appearance at last year's Gay Games , where he skated two exhibition numbers, might have been declaration enough. (He and Canadian Matthew Hall, who took top honors in that competition, are the only two international-level skaters who are openly gay.) But more importantly, Mattis' skating routines are infused with overtly gay sensibilities, from the steady endurance of his AIDS memorial programs to wicked parodies that shock audiences into screaming ovations. There is nothing of the closet about Doug Mattis. Even if he observed a discreet silence about his sexuality like so many of his peers the first time you saw him lampoon Peggy Fleming's beehive during a competitive routine, you would know.
