As a mode of transportation for warfare and hunting in Northern Europe, skating was a swift way to cross frozen lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. Warriors and hunters crafted makeshift skates of reindeer antlers or elk bones, and later iron and steel. By the 16th century, skaters were transporting goods across frozen waterways. In 1892, the International Skating Union (ISU) was founded. Six years later, the first ISU-sanctioned event was held, and organisers hoped it might soon become an official Olympic sport. Because competitions could be held indoors, figure skating was the first winter sport included in the Olympic Games when it was added to the Olympic program for the 1908 Summer Olympic Games in London. The singles and pairs competitions also appeared in the 1920 Antwerp Summer Games.

Extractions: The ratings for Michelle's special, according to USA Today. A 6.6 rating, and a 12 share. It was tied for the 61st show of the week (out of 111). Each rating point equals 994,000 households, and each share equals the precentage of sets in use. So, approximately 9.9 million people watched the special. This was better than her first special which got a 4.8 rating, and a 9 share, with 7 million people watching. As with her first special, it was opposite a high rated show (Providence), which was #17 for the week. Did you catch Michelle's Disney special? It was different than her Mulan special. I liked the little clips from her skating past towards the beginning. Most of the costumes were beautiful. Extractions: On Sunday on ABC, during the credits for the movie Jungle to Jungle (which was just before Millionaire), they showed an ad for Michelle's new special, Princess on Ice. They showed her in the black costume skating to "Body Rock." They also showed her in the white costume . I'm sure they showed her in a few other programs, but I turned it on after it started, and I was so excited to finally see some promotion for the special that I don't think I remember everything. They also showed Dorothy Hamill and Katarina Witt. Hopefully they will show this ad many more times this week before it is on Saturday. More on Michelle's new Disney special, Michelle Kwan: Princess on Ice. Disney is auctioning off some of the items from the special through ebay . Items include costumes, sketches of costumes, and 6 pairs of skates signed by Michelle. The costumes are designed by Jef Billings. The auctions also include some pictures of Michelle from the special. Check out all the items up for auction on ebay.
Extractions: On The Edge Interview by LISA Lisa:How did you learn so much about ice skating and the Russian language? Mary:I've been a fan of figure skating since I was five. That's about twenty-six years now. I was also a roller figure skater in my youth. There is a great deal of cross-over (pun intended) from one sport to another. I've studied Russian a little bit, enough to know the alphabet and some foibles of the language. I had a friend in Murmanska, Russia that I used to chat with on ICQ. He helped mostly with cultural issues. Most of the actual Russian words are thanks to a Professor of Slavic Languages at Vanderbilt University. He did the translations for me, including the naughty ones. Lisa:Have you ever been to the Olympics? If you have, what was it like? Mary:I've never been to the Olympics. I have been to Skate America (the US's big international competition) and I've been back stage twice at Champions on Ice the summer after the 98 Olympics. I've met and hounded for autographs (No, I am not a "mental fan") the most famous skaters of today: Michelle Kwan, Tara Lipinski, Ilia Kulik and Todd Eldrege (and a bunch of others). Lisa:Are the characters based on people that you know?
European Championships History was made on the final day of the 1997 European Figure skating In themen s competition, world silver medallist ilia kulik (RUS) took the lead http://www.iceskatingintnl.com/archive/Results/euro97.HTM
Extractions: 1997 European Championships Prepared from notes provided by Klaus Reinhold-Kany, and from ISU press releases. 1997 EUROPEAN FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY FIVE History was made on the final day of the 1997 European Figure Skating Championships (Saturday) at the Palais Omnisport in Paris, France as Irina Slutskaya completed a clean sweep for Russia by winning the gold medal in the Ladies' competition. To date, no nation had ever won the gold medal in all four disciplines at the European Championships. Seventeen year old Slutskaya, the defending champion and world bronze medalist, skated last and won eight first places from the judges. Her program included six triples and although her landings were not all perfect, it was more than enough to take the gold and complete the set for Russia. Krisztina Czako placed fourth in the free skating but held on to her overnight second place to become the first Hungarian skater for 26 years to win a medal in the European ladies event. It was the 18 year old's first international medal success. The bronze medal went to 19 year old Yulia Lavrenchuk (UKR) who placed third in the free to move up from her fifth position in the short. For Lavrenchuk too, it was the first time on the podium at an ISU Championships. Russian national champion Maria Butyrskaya placed second in the free skating but her ninth place in the short program had left her too far adrift to make the podium and she finished fourth overall. Surya Bonaly (FRA), recovering from a major Achilles injury, has not recaptured the form that won her five European titles and could only finish tenth in the free, dropping to ninth place overall. Teammate Vanessa Gusmeroli, third overnight, also had a disappointing afternoon, placing ninth in the free to fall to sixth place overall.

I liked him the moment he stepped on the ice for the short program in Nagano. I had no idea who he was, but I really loved his style of skating and I wanted him to win the Gold Medal. And he did!!!! : ) I was so happy for the little guy... Ilia is an amazingly talented figure-skater. His programs blend beautifully artistic, intricate moves with powerful jumps to form a very exciting and wonderful thing to watch. His costumes, though criticized by many, in my opinion are great. They show his fearlessness in being unique and different from those around him. In addition to his pure talent on the ice, Ilia seems like a really nice person off the ice. He has a great sense of humor, and a boyish charm as well. (Hopefully I'll get the chance to meet him someday!!)

Yes, we have Elvis Stojko and Todd Eldredge and even Phillipe Candeloro is excellent, but in my heart I was cheering for Ilia to win the gold at the '98 Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Congratulations! "...a Russian who... skates like a feather floating in a soft breeze. Kulik was too, too grand and belonged at the top of the stand. He combines superb athletic ability with Barishnikov ballet artistry, a flair of flying..." Woody Page, Denver Post 2/15/98
Extractions: "[A sport] does not pit athlete against tailor" AP NAGANO, Japan (KRT) I'll probably get killed for this, but I'm going to say it anyway. Figure skating is not a sport. And in case you missed it ... Figure skating IS NOT A SPORT. Oh, it's many things. It's athletic. It's dramatic. It's exciting. And yes, the competitors do break a sweat (unlike, say, darts.) But don't call it a sport. Call it a performance. A sport pits athlete against athlete, or athlete against clock, or athlete against height, weight or distance. It does not pit athlete against tailor.
Rudy Galindo: Keri Lotion Figure Skating Classic - 1998 Dick s comments struck me as a sign that yes, skating really has come a long way . I think he likes both ilia and Rudy, but he likes Rudy more, http://www.rudy-galindo.com/keri.htm
Extractions: Photo by Barry Mittan Reviews and commentary which relate to the TV airing of the Keri Lotion Classic, December 11, on ABC. "Finally watched my Keri Lotion tape, and was surprised to see Galindo's "Over the Rainbow" on it. I didn't even know he'd skated it there. Many thanks to ABC for un-chacking this program. I do not know if homophobia had anything to do with the original chacking from U.S. Pros, but obviously all such suspicions must be withdrawn now. "To me, even more significant than seeing Galindo skate it was hearing Dick Button's succinct, matter-of-fact statement that the rainbow flag is the symbol of the gay and lesbian movement. That was it. No apology. No worries about setting back the sport. No misguided attempt to protect something or somebody by omitting this information. "Dick Button has always "gotten" what Galindo tries to do. He understood that the red ribbon in "Ave Maria" was enormous because Galindo felt enormous grief. His genuine pleasure in the clever "Macho Man" parody made viewer discomfort seem petty and backward. And now, he discusses the rainbow flag with very welcome common sense. "It is wonderful to see a real grown-up and class act running such a large part of the sport. Thanks to Dick Button for his perceptiveness and his level-headedness."
