Extractions: Posted: Wed February 4, 1998 He's the Leonardo DiCaprio of figure skating, an apple-cheeked heartthrob with mischief in his eyes and trampoline springs in his legs. Russia's Ilia Kulik, 20, also happens to be the most complete package among the men vying for the gold medal in Nagano, a skater whose mix of classical ballet training, out-of-your-seat athleticism and theatrical flair makes him the hottest young star on ice. MANNY MILLAN Kulik, who was born in Moscow, has been turning heads since winning the world junior championship in 1995. Tall for a figure skater at nearly six feet, he combines the long, clean lines of 1988 Olympic gold medalist Brian Boitano with the speed and natural pizzazz of four-time world champion Kurt Browning. At the world championships in Edmonton in '96, Kulik's first year as a senior, he wowed the judges with the height of his jumps and his impeccable landing positionsfree leg held high, toe pointed, arms extended, back straight, head up. He finished a strong secondthree of the nine judges placed him firstto Todd Eldredge of the U.S., after which Boitano commented, "He jumps like a god."

Articles - The Ekaterina Gordeeva & Sergei Grinkov Corner You accepted his invitation to skate in ice Olympus without hesitation? Certainly, it would be great to arrive with my husband ilia kulik. http://www.gg-corner.de/articles/2003/20031020a.htm
Extractions: translated by MoonlightElegie Among the participants of Artur Dmitrievs Ice Olympus show there was the two-time Olympic pairs figure skating champion Ekaterina Gordeeva. Her store is worthy of a novel. In her first 25 years the two-time Olympic champion lost her husband and partner Sergei Grinkov. Only little Dasha remained with her. Producers of the American show with whom the Russian figure skaters had a contract with began promoting an image of an inconsolable widow on the ice. But Katia lived as she should as a young beautiful woman. She worked, fell in love, married Olympic champion Ilia Kulik and have birth to their daughter Liza. Ekaterina Gordeeva now talks to the correspondent of "Change". What do you remember from your previous visits to Saint Petersburg? It is hard for me to answer this objectively. We performed in Lillehammer and we were ready for that moment. With Arthur and Natasha, the rivalry was not reflected in our attitudes at all. We were friends of Arthur then and we are friends now.

Gordeeva And Kulik Grand Slam 2000 Interview Voice behind the scene Teammates ilia kulik and Katia Gordeeva skated pairs ilia When I see her, I see that quality of skating and it doesn t matter http://www.gordeeva.com/chat/english/grandslam_2000.shtml
Extractions: TV Shows Media / Interview / Grand Slam 2000 A short interview taken at the Grand Slam of Figure Skating in 2000. Download video 4.7 Mb (1:12 min). Voice behind the scene: Teammates Ilia Kulik and Katia Gordeeva skated pairs together last season on tour. What's developed is a romance off the ice and a respect for each other as well. Ilia: When I see her, I see that quality of skating and it doesn't matter how she is skating in pairs or if she's doing single skating. It's, you know, it's a pure quality of movement, it is a pure quality of skating, it's.. You know if she is doing a step, you can be sure that this is the right step and this is the right edge. Katia: He like to invent something on the ice like to do some different movements which he never saw on anyone, not on the ice. You know, he's always having ideas on something. Like you'll see one of his numbers I thought it's amazing because I never saw anyone do this stuff on the ice. And he's just doing it all by himself. For me it's pretty amazing. But, um... mostly he inspires me (laughs). Home Photos Programs Biography ... Irina S

OLYMPICS/NAGANO 1998 Staminaand grace-leads rosy-cheeked ilia kulik of Russia to a gold medal magine for a moment last week s men s figure-skating competition as a feature http://www.time.com/time/reports/olympics/kulik.html
Extractions: By GINIA BELLAFANTE magine for a moment last week's men's figure-skating competition as a feature film in preproduction, with the team of Olympic judges as the venture's casting directors. For the role of leading man, the producers have asked for someone the world can call a champion. But whom to choose? Do they opt for a sinewy 20-year-old talent, all Baryshnikov grace and DiCaprio innocence? Or do they go with a stockily built he-man, a comparative veteran of 25, whose brash moves and manner suggest a cross between Michael Flatley and Steven Seagal? With the world's current crop of elite male skaters all master technicians and wizardly athletes, the competition at the Nagano Olympics first appeared as though it would amount to a contest of aesthetics: the classical artistry of Russia's ballet-trained Ilia Kulik, a first-time Olympian, pitted against the don't-fence-me-in aggressiveness of Canadian Elvis Stojko, a black belt in karate and three-time world champion. Both men performed well and cleanly during Thursday's short program (the 2-min. 40-sec. execution of eight required elements), but Kulik led the event, suggesting a judicial preference for his traditional brand of physical elegance.
Iceskate.Net - Olympics The first Olympic figure skating events were held in London in 1908. Men,ilia kulik (RUS), Elvis Stojko (CAN), Philippe Candeloro (FRA) http://www.iceskate.net/olympics.html
Extractions: There are two classes of figure skaters; Olympic eligible (the old "amateur" status) and not Olympic eligible (professionals). Olympic eligible skaters are restricted to skating in events that are sanctioned by their federation and/or the International Skating Union. Professional skaters can skate in anything *but* sanctioned events (with the exception of the occasional sanctioned pro-ams, such as the Hersheys Kisses or Ultimate 4 competitions). Shortly before the 1994 Olympics the ISU temporarily opened up reinstatement for professional skaters (which is why you saw Boitano, Browning, and others skating in Lillihammer), then closed it again in 1995. The only skater who opted for reinstatement and remained Olympic eligible after the 1994 Olympics was Artur Dmitriev. He and partner Natalia Mishkutenok won the pairs competition at the 1992 Olympics and placed second at the 1994 Olympics. Mr. Dmitriev then returned with a new partner, Oksana Kasakova, to win the pairs title again at the 1998 Olympics. The first Olympic figure skating events were held in London in 1908. Figure skating was not listed on Olympic programs until the first Winter Olympic games in 1924.

Extractions: Russia's Ilia Kulik, center, Canada's Elvis Stojko, left, and France's Philippe Candeloro Ilya Kulik soared through a quadruple jump to take the men's figure skating gold medal. He completed a near perfect performance in the free skate to earn Russia's second successive men's figure skating title. He had earlier won the short programme. Elvis Stojko of Canada won the silver despite a flat programme and Philippe Candeloro of France took the bronze, with one 6.0 for presentation. Britain's Steven Cousins finished seventh, while American Todd Eldredge had a rough night and fell to fourth. Kulik, 20, became the first skater since Dick Button in 1948 to take the gold in his initial Olympics, and the third straight skater from a former Soviet republic to take the title. He did so with a marvellous set of jumps, highlighted by a massive quadruple toe loop and two solid triple axles, one in combination. In all, he landed eight triples and the quad, and made them all look easy. His footwork to Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" was playful and his spins precise.

Extractions: SUMMER CHAMPIONS ON ICE REVIEW - CHICAGO, IL (UNITED CENTER) 07/18/98 - 8:00P show Greetings/Salutations: Hi everybody... I attended the 8:00P show on the 18th and it was my first COI and I was pumped up! After watching all of these skaters on tv to see them in person was simply amazing. Crowd was really subdued though. Is Chicago considered a knowledgeable figure skating city? I am not sure if the audience knew what they were witnessing... Here are my impressions, w/o identifying jumps... I did not want to take notes because it would have taken away from my experience. Noteworthy (for me) no shows: Michael Weiss - I really enjoyed him! He did not do When a Man Loves A Woman, he did a jazzy medley (Doors?)... I am not usually impressed with him, but I was thoroughly entertained by him - he does a HUGE triple lutz that I like. Great audience reaction. Tonia Kwiatkowski - She definitely looks more "girlish" and soft in person (not so harsh) and she did great... nailed everything and looked as if she was having a blast! Glad the audience warmed up to her. Alexei Urmanov - Skated great! I think he's back. Polite applause.
