History Skeletal remains with animal bone blades tied to the feet testify to skatingâs existence as early as 10,000 bc. These remains were found in peat bogs in The Netherlands. Scandinavia is called the mother of skating because of the sportâs popularity there, beginning around ad 1000. Ice skating was primarily a means of transportation at first, although documents from The Netherlands indicate that speed races were held in towns as early as the 15th century. A. Early Pioneers American athlete Jackson Haines is known as the father of modern figure skating. Haines was born in 1840 in New York City. After studying dance and ballet, he became a dancing master and applied his dancing techniques to figure skating. He performed around the world and became well known for his imaginative and artistic techniques. Hainesâs style was enthusiastically received in Europe and eventually became accepted internationally. The formation of national and international skating organizations began during the 1890s. In 1892 the International Skating Union (ISU) was established. Today the ISU defines the rules and sets performance standards for speed skating, figure skating, and ice dancing competitions. Also in the late 1800s the National Amateur Skating Association of the United States and the International Skating Union of America were founded. In 1921 national standards were set down for skating, and the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA) was formed to govern the sport in the United States, superseding the earlier organizations. Speed skating in the United States is governed by the United States International Speed Skating Association and the Amateur Speedskating Union of the United States, both of which are affiliated with the ISU.
TSB Events | Reports | 2000 Stars On Ice / Rockford, IL ilia kulik s blues program was well skated, with three triple jumps as well. Yamaguchi and kulik ripped the hole a little bigger, skating to Smooth http://www.theskateblade.com/events/reports/2000soi-roc.htm
Extractions: By Joseph Erbentraut By Joseph Erbentraut The Target Stars on Ice tour came to Rockford, Illinois, on Thursday, March 30, 2000. This was the first year the tour came to Rockford, and obviously the employees of the Metro Centre didn't know what to expect. A traffic jam outside the arena meant that many people were late, and the show started fifteen minutes after its scheduled start time. However, the "Stars"-Scott Hamilton, Tara Lipinski, Kristi Yamaguchi, Ekaterina Gordeeva, Kurt Browning, Ilia Kulik, Bechke & Petrov, Lu Chen, Roca & Sur, Meno & Sand, and Steven Cousins put on an excellence performance, entertaining the Rockford audience. Browning opened the show with his signature antics, before the other skaters joined him for the opening number. It was fast-paced and very energetic, which was the style of most of this season's show. Next Lipinski, Kulik, and Meno & Sand danced to "Bailamos", followed by a program where Lu Chen used a fan as a prop. Gordeeva and Yamaguchi then did a duet, followed by a group Swing program by Scott Hamilton, Bechke & Petrov, Chen and Cousins. Browning drew many laughs as Rag-Gidon the clown, landing a perfect triple-triple combo. Next, Roca & Sur skated elegantly to music from "The Ghost". Their lifts are really exceptional! Next, Gordeeva skated with a ribbon to the music of Liszt. The ribbon streamer added beautiful dimensions to the program, especially during her spins. Ilia Kulik's blues program was well skated, with three triple jumps as well. Meno & Sand's "Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing" was very elegant and sexy, even though she fell on the throw double axel. Lipinski pulled off two triples to "Genie in a Bottle", after being carried onto the ice to the music of "I Dream of Jennie". Then the Simon & Garfunkel tribute began. Hamilton entertained to "You Can Call Me Al", even though HE fell on a triple salchow. Cousins and Browning joined him for "Me & Julio", then Gordeeva flirted with Hamilton to "Cecilia" before leaving him alone for "The Sounds of Silence". For that song, he was joined by the pairs and dancers. Then, the duos cleared the ice, before Yamaguchi entered wearing a beautiful white dress. She then skated to "Bridge Over Troubled Water", landing three triples, and skating wonderfully. Next, Hamilton, Gordeeva, Browning, and Cousins returned for "Old Friends". It was an emotional program, skated very well, in synch perfectly. That was the end of the first act. The second act began with Lipinski being chased by her "admirers" Kulik, Cousins, Sur, and Petrov. Then, Cousins skated his solo to Prince's "About that Walk". He flirted with the audience and also landed three gorgeous triples. (He was really on tonight!) Next, Lu Chen struggled through "It's Not Right, but It's Okay" by Whitney Houston. She fell on the triple loop and the triple toe. Then, Yamaguchi joined the duo, skating to "Jazzin'", then Cousins was tied to a gigantic zebra-striped couch by Chen and Yamaguchi. Lots of fun! That was followed by a flirtatious number performed by Kurt Browning and Tara Lipinski. I don't know, something just seems off center through this program, but they performed it well. Next, Bechke & Petrov pleased the audience to "Czardas", having them clap along to the rhythm of the folk song. Meno & Sand and Roca & Sur then took the ice to beautiful bolero music, being joined by Katia in a beautiful red dress. Then, she was joined by Ilia Kulik, her boyfriend, and they skated a beautiful pairs program. It brought many audience members to tears. Then it was time for the final solos of the headliners. Browning ripped a hole in the ceiling to "Play that Funky Music", including a beautiful triple axel! Yamaguchi and Kulik ripped the hole a little bigger, skating to "Smooth" and "Baseball Cap", both drawing huge ovations. The hole was then left alone by Tara Lipinski's "American Woman"... no further comment there... and then the entire roof was ripped off by Hamilton. He skated wearing ballet tights to "Don Quixote". It was hilarious, and two backflips and many pirouettes later, the crowd was on their feet! The finale to a beautiful, funky version of "What a Wonderful World" was beautifully skated, and I think this is my favorite finale of any SOI show. A great night of figure skating!

Extractions: By Joe Erbentraut "Superstar" Lucinda Ruh - Lucinda emerged from the tunnel to perform spins in a beautiful sparkling dress while the amazing light show that has become Stars on Ice began. Although most skating fans are well aware of Lucinda's spinning ability, casual/non-fans seem to be in awe of it. I must say that seeing the same three spins over and over during the past few years is starting to get a bit old but hey, anything that can attract more non-fans to skating is all right by me! "Black Betty" Cast - Lucinda leaves, and the guys now emerge, standing in spotlights wearing black shirts with little hearts on them and red leather pants. Then the sex begins as the ladies go to join them. After the initial pairing up, Ilia Kulik separated to do a double axel and triple toe, while the girls danced at center ice. All of the skaters were introduced once again, then we had more lap dances in pairs with a few axels and lifts thrown in there. This year's opening certainly got the crowd into to it from the get-go with high energy music that was a lot of fun but I feel that this was the least unique and interesting opening number in recent memory from the show... Since when does every group number from Stars on Ice have to have all the girls and guys pair up and do lap dances? All of them are starting to look the same.

Figure skaters use skates which differ slightly from hockey skates, to perform spins, jumps, and other "moves" on the ice, often to music. There are international competitions for figure skating, such as the World Championships and figure skating is also an official event in the Winter Olympics Table of contents showTocToggle("show","hide") 1 Jumps 7 See also: There are six major jumps in figure skating. All six are landed on a right back outside edge by righthanded skaters, but have different takeoffs, by which they may be distinguished. The two categories of jumps are toe jumps and edge jumps. Toe jumps are launched by tapping the toe pick of one skate into the ice, and include (in order of difficulty from easiest to hardest): Toe loops, which take off from the back outside edge of the right foot and are launched by the left toe pick (toe walleys are similar, but take off from the back inside edge of the right foot);

Extractions: Collusion among the judges. Confusion among the public. Domination by the Russians. Those were the themes last week at the world figure skating championships, and though it would be a pleasure to watch Alexei Yagudin jump, Lucinda Ruh spin and Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizerat emote again next year, this sport, which too often resembles a spectacle, had best use the next 12 months wisely. Figure skating is on thin ice. More than five years after the soap-opera saga involving Tonya Harding (the villain) and Nancy Kerrigan (the victim) produced record U.S. prime-time ratings at the 1994 Winter Olympics and a burst of curiosity worldwide, figure skating's popularity and coherence are suffering. Television audiences for traditional events dropped significantly in the United States this season, and interest also has waned in major European markets. Russia, whose skaters are the best in the world, has more pressing concerns. The reigning men's Olympic champion, Ilia Kulik, says he can walk the streets in Moscow and hardly be recognized.
Extractions: Interview by LISA Lisa:How did you learn so much about ice skating and the Russian language? Mary:I've been a fan of figure skating since I was five. That's about twenty-six years now. I was also a roller figure skater in my youth. There is a great deal of cross-over (pun intended) from one sport to another. I've studied Russian a little bit, enough to know the alphabet and some foibles of the language. I had a friend in Murmanska, Russia that I used to chat with on ICQ. He helped mostly with cultural issues. Most of the actual Russian words are thanks to a Professor of Slavic Languages at Vanderbilt University. He did the translations for me, including the naughty ones. Lisa:Have you ever been to the Olympics? If you have, what was it like? Mary:I've never been to the Olympics. I have been to Skate America (the US's big international competition) and I've been back stage twice at Champions on Ice the summer after the 98 Olympics. I've met and hounded for autographs (No, I am not a "mental fan") the most famous skaters of today: Michelle Kwan, Tara Lipinski, Ilia Kulik and Todd Eldrege (and a bunch of others). Lisa:Are the characters based on people that you know?

On Dec. 8 the Olympic pairs champion (her skating partner, husband Sergei Grinkov, died of a heart attack in 1995) was in Burbank watching Daria take part in her first major competition, an Ice Skating Institute holiday show. Gordeeva, who is not Daria's coach, helped with warm-ups and costume changes, but she sat in the stands like all the other nervous parents when her daughter took to the ice and won two events.
