Extractions: When I applied to be a volunteer two years ago, I had no idea how exciting it would be. Originally, I was offered an assignment to assist with the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. My fate changed when an alumnus named Phil Mickey visited Weber State University. In his position as the Olympic News Service coordinator for the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, he was on a mission to recruit students reporters. Although I had no prior experience I submited a written sample of my work and was honored to be selected. As an Olympic News Service reporter, it was my task to interview the athletes and gather news worthy quotes from them in the "mixed zone." The mixed zone was a designated area for accredited journalists and broadcasters. This is where the media waited for the athletes to enter and exit during competition. The role of the Olympic News Service was to produce reports for the Info 2002 news system. Since journalists could not be at every event, an information pool was created that could be shared by all. Accredited journalists could log on the system and use reports to assist them in writting stories. Information provided by the service included athlete biographies, event previews, and reviews, flash quotes, athlete practice schedules, as well as press conference highlights. Because of my student reporter status I did not have to stand behind the fence in the mixed zone with the other journalists. Instead, I was allowed to walk with the athletes and question them as they prepared for their formal interviews. What an invigorating process.

Extractions: Spins : Welcome to the technical figure skating spin page. You'll find AVI clips of all the common spins here. Great spinning is the most difficult part of figure skating. It's also the most beautiful and unique part of skating that has no equal in art or sport. Spinning takes more energy than jumping and doesn't win competitions, so most elite skaters don't want to waste time on it. It's my hope that someday great spinning will make a comeback. It's also my hope that someday Katerina Witt will ask me to cook her breakfast, but that's not likely to happen either. Introduction It is well worth the effort to put in the time nescessary to learn how to spin well. As a skater myself, the greatest joy I feel on the ice is when I can manage a long, fast, centered spin. It's exhilerating. And it's good excercise. Two great reasons to work on it. The third reason is "spin face". Spin face is the goofy orgasmic look most skaters get on their faces when they spin fast. The stress and concentration when spinning is so great most people forget how to hold a normal facial expression. The holy grail of spinning is the blur spin. A blur spin is so fast you can see the front and back of the skater at the same time. It's the eigth man made wonder of the world. And, unfortuneately, like most of the other wonders the blur spin is also extinct. As far as I know there is nobody who can still do a blur spin. Ronnie Robertson was one of the best spinners of all time and the best known blur spinner. There is a

National Review Online No, with figure skating, the worst problem of all is simply trying to find outwhat s of former world champion and sixtime US champion todd eldredge, http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/comment-dalfonzo011703.asp
Extractions: No, with figure skating, the worst problem of all is simply trying to find out what's going on. We're told that skating is one of the most-popular sports in the world. One poll in the 1990s had it coming in second to football, and it's long been the most-watched sport at the Winter Olympics. But you'd never know it from the media coverage. Just try to find results for any skating competition (except for U.S. nationals, worlds, or the Olympics) in the next day's newspaper. If we're extremely lucky, some stray sportswriter will do a couple of paragraphs. Most of the time, though, any analysis we get is on the level of a bunch of eighth-grade girls composing a gossip column for the school paper. I realize that the majority of skating fans are female, but that doesn't mean we couldn't handle a little serious commentary now and then. There's not a chance you'd know the results from actually watching the competition, since most of them are aired at least a week after they take place, if at all. This fall, the first major international competition of the season, won by Michelle Kwan (filling in at the last minute for injured Olympic champion Sarah Hughes), was preempted in the Washington, D.C., area for a showing of Disney's

To read more about the sport of figure skating, please check out http://www.ifsmagazine.com Question: What happened in the pairs final last night? Mark Lund: The top two teams both skated very well. But it appeared to everyone except five of the nine judges that the Canadians, Jamie Sale and David Pelletier, were superior. Q: What was the mood in the building? Lund: The Canadians had the audience mesmerized. This isn't the easiest building to perform in, because the audience seating is so far up from the ice, but Sale and Pelletier were totally in tune with the spectators. Q: What about the gold medalists, Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze of Russia? Lund: They were very good. No one can dispute that. But good as in silver medalists. Q: What was the deciding factor in giving the gold to the Russians? Lund: It may have been politically motivated. One of the judges who placed Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze first was the judge from France, Marie Reine Le Gougne. There is a French ice dance team, Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizerat, that's contending for the gold medal in ice dance. Russia does not have gold medal contender in ice dance. Their top team is skating for the bronze. Perhaps there is some political maneuvering.

Event Reviews And Reports | 1995 US FS Postal Service Challenge On November 27, 1995, I attended the US Figure skating Postal Service Challenge . Totals, Nicole Bobek, todd eldredge, Mark Mitchell, Rosalynn Sumners http://heatherw.com/mk/reports/proam/postal95.htm
Extractions: On November 27, 1995, I attended the US Figure Skating Postal Service Challenge. It was a competition held over two days, but I could only attend the first night, where the skaters did their short programs. So I didn't get to see the long programs. :-( (If it was now, I would never not attend a skating event with my favorite skaters...what was I thinking) This was one of the first team pro-am competitions, so I didn't know what to expect. While deleting some old files from my computer, I came across this review of the comp that I originally posted to the Prodigy FS BB. It was fun to read my thoughts from the night, and I decided to post it here. I obviously wasn't that detailed then. The scores for each skater follows my review. I only have the short program marks, but I included the long program totals and final totals according to the TV broadcast (on ABC December 16, 1995). One final sad note. The competition took place about a week after Sergei died, and I didn't even think most of the skaters would be there (his close friends such as Scott, Paul, etc.) Onto the review... Scott Hamilton, Paul Wylie, and Rosalynn Sumners WERE all there. They had a moment of silence before the competition for Sergei. Then, all the skaters came out before the competition started wearing a jersey for their respective team.
