Extractions: SRFSC Member Information History of the Santa Rosa Figure Skating Club The Santa Rosa Figure Skating Club (SRFSC) is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to promote and improve amateur figure skating. To be recognized by the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA), a club must formally apply for membership. The very first clubs to be chartered by the USFSA are now more than 100 years old (all are on the East Coast). The SRFSC has a proud, sixty-five-year heritage: we applied for membership in the USFSA in 1936, and after a two-year process we were granted a USFSA Charter in 1938. THE BREWERY YEARS! In the 1930s, recreational ice skaters used a warehouse of Santa Rosa's Grace Bros. Brewery, which was located near what is now the Courtyard by Marriott at Railroad Square. The brewery warehouse required refrigeration, and a group of figure and hockey skaters received permission to "flood" a refrigerated area to create a skating surface. Eventually, the brewery rented them an entire warehouse room, where they established the first skating rink in the area. In 1936 the hockey team moved to a college campus rink that was located on College Road. Many of those hockey players became part of the World Hockey Team, the equivalent of today's Olympic Hockey Team, and toured the world representing the United States of America.

Extractions: When it comes to teaching ice skating, figure, pairs or dance, one name always seems to come to the top, Gladys Hogg . Ice skating was not a sport or a profession to Miss Hogg, it was her way of life, the rink, her domain, an ice skating professional. As a competitor, she achieved success in both roll and ice skating, was British Roller dance champion with John Blaver, and ice skated with Ronnie Baker. S he had three national roller dance victories with two British professional ice dance titles, with Ronnie Baker in 1947 and with Bernard Spencer in 1949, and also took the British professional ice pairs championship in 1947. She held five first class awards ice figure, ice pair, ice dance, ice figure instructor's and roller dance. She coached countless British champions, her pupils came from far and wide to seek her knowledge and experience. Her pupils gained many titles, Diane Towler and Bernard Ford, 4 times world ice dance champions, Courtney Jones with June Markham and Doreen Denny, John and Jenny Nicks, John Curry, Robin Cousins. It is interesting to consider how many of her pupils remained in ice skating, as coaches or officials, Courtney Jones, now an ISU technical delegate, Janet Thompson (Coton) an ISU championship dance referee, Diane Towler and Bernard Ford ice dance professionals, the list goes on. Her teaching ethic was not just on the ice, but as a life style.
Golden Boy Who Still Cuts The Ice - Sunday Times - Times Online On the ice, robin cousins, the former Olympic and world champion figure skater, His obsession with ice skating began as a child growing up in Bristol, http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2090-1386094,00.html
Extractions: NI_MPU('middle'); But while he always was a firm believer in hard graft, Cousins has been no stranger to injury and heartache, plagued by persistent knee problems since the very beginning of his career in 1972. Even now he is keen to stress that behind the sparkling sequins there is a fair share of blood, sweat and tears. His advice for the starry-eyed youngsters, dreaming of an easy glide to stardom, is to forget the costumes and do some work. Cousins is equally realistic about the throwaway qualities of ice shows. The sport itself skates a fine line between kitsch and competition, and Woosh!, which promises light shows and Christmas tunes, is hardly the Nutcracker, despite his commitment to the cause. With British ice dance champions John and Sinead Kerr on board, Cousins hopes their emergent dance skills will guarantee an experience to remember. He sees the Livingston pair playing a part in the resurgence in the skating scene, and is sure that a forthcoming Strictly Come Skating-style television show will stimulate more interest in the sport.

The two-hour show will be taped for airing on NBC (KVBC Channel 3) from 4 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 23. Channel4.com - Real Lives - John Curry - Text Only Carlo and Christa Fassi (who later also coached robin cousins). John Currytransformed ice skating. His problems were those faced by many pioneers http://www.channel4.com/history/microsites/R/real_lives/curry_t.html
Extractions: News Film Homes Life ... Real Lives home page and list of other Real Lives Early dreams. Born in 1949, John Curry was a dance enthusiast from an early age: he had wanted to take ballet classes when he was five years old, but his father refused. Instead, John took up skating, at which he excelled. Numerous competition wins followed, satisfying his father that skating qualified as a competitive sport. When he was 16 his father died and John moved to London. He began training full-time and also started taking the previously forbidden ballet classes. Already, he was formulating his life's mission: to form an ice dance company, bring ballet-standard dance to the skating world and reveal the possibilities of the rink to the ballet world. John wanted to make a name for himself in international figure skating, but two obstacles stood in his way: one technical and one stylistic. Technically, John's performance suffered as he competed at higher levels: after a flawless practice, nervousness would lead to slips in front of the judges. And stylistically, John was at odds with the British figure skating community. His vision of ice dance and his years as a ballet enthusiast had helped him to develop his own fluid, expressive style. This was seen as acceptable in a child skater, but less appropriate for a young man: 'I was actually told not to be so graceful,' he later recalled.
Extractions: "All competitions are decided by fate," says Russian figure skater Anton Sikharulidze, one-half of this week's gold-medal winning pair. Fate has been kind to the excellent Russian pairs skaters, and before them the Soviets, who have won Olympic gold 11 consecutive times dating back 42 years. The question now is whether fate's normally capricious hand is being manipulated. It is a difficult question to raise in a subjectively judged sport without giving the appearance of sour grapes at losing. To be sure, Mr. Sikharulidze and his partner Elena Berezhnaia skated well Monday night, if not without a stumble or two. But the International Skating Union's announcement Tuesday that it will hold an internal "assessment" of the allegations suggests the concerns cannot be dismissed as poor sportsmanship. Why do figure skating and ice dancing seem so prone to allegations of manipulation, when other judged sports such as freestyle skiing, gymnastics and diving do not? Figure skating and ice dancing are the only judged sports that use ordinals (placements) to determine winners; the athlete who takes the majority of first placements wins. Some observers suggest this has led to bloc voting.

Extractions: Robin Cousins was the next act on. Before you start thinking wed frozen the stage and enjoyed an evening of ice-skating, it wasnt THAT Robin Cousins. Looking like the love child of Dylan Moran and Art Garfunkel, Robin oozed self-confidence and worked the stage like he was a natural. Hailing from East Anglia (old ten fingers, they call me) he entertained us with some observational comedy and funny stories. And then, before we knew where we were, his time was up. 3 March 2005 Our open mic spot was taken this week by Robin Cousins . No, we didnt enjoy an evening of ice skating or anything like that. Robin was last seen at the Last Laugh when he was competing in the BBC 3 New Comedy Awards back in 2003. The East Anglian was in good form that night, but didnt quite seem to hit the spot tonight. Maybe it was because Alex had had such a good opening, but many of Robins jokes failed to amuse our audience tonight. Shame though, because he has some good lines hell have better evenings here, Im sure. click here
