AP SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Michelle Kwan at her best means a slew of 6.0s on the scoreboard, standing ovations and a sense that she couldn't do any better. That was what Kwan did a year ago in dominating the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She doesn't need to be anywhere near so good against a weakened field this time and she wasn't. Still, she received one perfect mark and eight 5.9s for presentation Thursday night in winning the short program. Those sterling marks came even though Kwan herself found some imperfections in her performance to "The Fate of Carmen." "I felt really strong and confident," said Kwan, a two-time world champion closing in on her third American crown. "My lutz was a little shaky, higher than usual. But I guess I have to be prepared for anything."
Extractions: Hers to lose Click here for more on this story Posted: Saturday February 06, 1999 10:52 PM Kwan is enhancing her artistry, which already ranks among the most enchanting ever in the sport. AP SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Michelle Kwan has reached a strange juncture in her career as she heads into the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She is the unchallenged queen of figure skating these days. It might remain that way, particularly in this country, right through to the 2002 Olympics in this very city. For now, Kwan's quest will be for a third national championship, and she should get it even if she isn't at her best. And that's where things get unusual, because there really are no valid challengers for the 18-year-old two-time world champion and Olympic silver medalist. Yet Kwan knows she can't afford to take things easy.

Take Action Ask The USFSA To Reinstate Ted Clarke Although the brief grievance report in skating does not provide details, theconduct the USFSA amber corwin, Pacific Coast. Derrick Delmore, At Large http://www.worldskating.org/action/clarke-reinstatement.shtml
Extractions: As reported in the August/September 2003 issue of "Skating" magazine, the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA) has declared Ted Clarke ineligible after finding him guilty of conduct "detrimental to the welfare of figure skating". Although the brief grievance report in "Skating" does not provide details, the conduct the USFSA found so objectionable was his public expression of support for the WSF. You can read more about the case here At the time the disciplinary action was taken against him, Ted Clarke was the senior Vice President of the USFSA. In his long and distinguished career of service to the sport of figure skating, he has also held appointments from the USFSA as a national judge and referee; served as the president of the Skating Club of Boston and chair of the 2001 U.S. Championships; was the founder of the New England Inter-Club Council; and for 25 years acted as co-editor of "Tracings" magazine. The WSF is concerned about the bad precedent this case sets for freedom of speech and tolerance for dissenting opinions by the USFSA, since Ted Clarke seems to have been singled out for punishment only because he chose to express his opinions openly. We are also concerned that his fundamental rights to due process and a fair hearing may have been denied for political reasons because he was known to favor a change in the USFSA's administration as well as its policies. Take action!

Extractions: March 28, 2003 Report and Photos by Marie L. Hughes There was a revolution in downtown Washington, D.C. this past week. Of course, if you count Evgeny Plushenko's Quad Toe-Triple Toe-Double Loop, there were a lot of them. But this one was different. This week the figure skating community rose up almost as one and proclaimed their dissatisfaction with the interim judging system - with any system that prizes anonymity over accountability. Skating officials announced the ISU could not be reformed and started up a rival group, the World Skating Federation. SkateFAIR members rallied the fans with our buttons and pins and brochures and got over 200 of them to march outside the MCI Center on Friday. Finally, on Saturday, the skaters spoke. They formed the International Athletes Commission and voted on a platform that includes a strong vote of no confidence to anonymous judging. As Ladies Competitor Jennifer Robinson said to CBC News: "the fans are fed up, my parents are fed up, everybody's fed up"

Extractions: Jan. 3-11 2004 Index Updated: 13-Jan-2004 09:40 PM Oh my Gosh!! I can't believe how rude the crew of people I was sitting near at this morning's practice were. They were obnoxious and noisy about any skater they liked and ignored any skater that was not a name. They talked at the top of their voices the entire time and yelled across the arena at each other. They stood up at their seats and blocked other people's view. They very loudly made fun of skater's music, completely oblivious to whether the skater could hear. They were horrible and it is people like that that give all us fans a bad name. Michelle looked great, missed the loop in the run through, but fully in command of herself and the ice. The crowd went bananas for her and no one came close to getting the applause she did. Sasha decided to go for symmetry and also missed her loop in the run through. She looked good, landed more stuff than I have seen her land for a while.
