Extractions: Barry Mittan USA's Amber Corwin has been competing for almost two decades, longer than many of her competitors have been alive. But Corwin is not only getting older, she's getting better. This season she had her highest finish in over ten years of competing in senior ladies at the 2004 U. S. Nationals in Atlanta, finishing fourth. She capped off her season by taking the bronze medal at the 2004 Four Continents Championships after winning the short program and finishing fifth in the long. It was her second medal at the event. She also won a silver medal at the inaugural Four Continents Championship in 1999. "Four Continents comes at a great time for me," she said. "I came right after the peak of my season at Nationals. I was on automatic pilot. The momentum carried me right through." At 25, Corwin is one of the oldest women competing for the United States. "One reason I've had success is because I've always been healthy and ready to compete," she stated. "When I've been the alternate, I've been willing to go every time." As a result Corwin has competed in a wide variety of international events. In just the last two years, she has skated in Canada, China, Croatia, France, Germany, and Japan. She plans to continue at least until the 2006 Olympics. Then she'd like to try the professional skating circuit. "I've trained in Sun Valley the last few summers," she said. "I've learned a lot about show life from working there. I feel I'm getting a well-rounded education about both sides of skating. It's a different feeing to be entertaining people, using whatever music and costumes you want. I'd love to do show skating when I'm done competing."

History - All Year Figure Skating Club In 1945 the Mercury Figure skating Club lost its ice and was invited to share Nicole Bobek, Michelle Kwan, amber corwin, Naomi Nari Nam, Shanell Noji, http://www.allyearfsc.com/history/
Extractions: Entry Form All Year Figure Skating Club was organized in 1939 by a small group of enthusiastic skaters under the leadership of Mrs. Ann Rork Getty at the Tropical Ice Gardens in Westwood Village. The club developed rapidly along with the popularity of the sport and held both Junior and Senior sessions. Among the club professionals were Eugene Mikeler, Hubert Sprott and Helen Gage Moore. Helen still teaches on club sessions today. In 1945 the Mercury Figure Skating Club lost its ice and was invited to share the Westwood rink. The two clubs then merged to become the All Year-Mercury FSC. After a short time Mercury FSC disbanded and the club again became known as All Year Figure Skating Club. The club suffered a severe setback in 1949, when the Westwood rink by this time known as the Sonja Henie Ice Palace was torn down to accommodate expansion of UCLA. Arrangements were made to conduct sessions at the Pan Pacific Arena, but a year later that rink discontinued its ice...and All Year FSC was again without a home. Through the courtesy of the Los Angeles Figure Skating Club, one session a week was acquired at Hollywood's Polar Palace. Because it was not possible to hold together a large junior and senior membership on one session a week, the decision was made to devote that ice time to a senior dance and figure session. That way a nucleus of loyal members could be retained to help All Year FSC again pursue the objectives stated in its By-laws: to promote and improve figure skating in all its branches.

Extractions: 2001 Pacific Coast Sectional Championships Anchorage, AK 16-18 November 2000 Complete results from the 2001 Pacific Coast Sectional Championships, one of three qualifying sectional competitions leading to the 2001 U.S. Figure Skating Championships to be held in January, can be found on the USFSA web site. We offer here a brief report on the skating in the senior level events that were held in Anchorage, AK November 16-18. Ladies Short Program The ladies event consisted of a healthy sized group of 15 ladies. The short program was won by Biatrisa Liang the much hyped 12-year-old from Los Angeles. Liang skated a nearly clean program with only two minor errors. She landed a beautiful double Axel and a clean triple flip, but in her combination jump she flutzed the triple Lutz - double toe loop combination. Her spins were well done as were the presentation and connecting moves, except for a minor error in a straight line step sequence that did not meet requirements by failing to extend the full length of the ice. She received eight of nine first place ordinals, with one judge deciding in favor of Amber Corwin who placed second. Corwin attempted the most difficult program of the group but was only partially successful. She landed a triple toe loop (with cheated toe Axel takeoff) - triple toe loop combination, and a decent double Axel. Her solo triple Lutz out of footwork was cheated, two-footed and then stepped out of, while her spins, step sequences and connecting moves were all of decent quality. The program, yet another attempt at a sensual jazzy number, was skated more or less in time to the music, but one had to struggle to drive from one's mind the image of Olive Oyle trying to skate seductively for Popeye.
