Extractions: Many people are e-mailing me about the version of "Reflection" that Michelle skates to. It is not the version that is on the soundtrack, or in the movie. Someone that knows Lea Salonga, the singer of "Reflection", told me that Disney decided to cut it from the film (don't know why.) In fact, Lea didn't even have a copy of it until Disney sent her one about a month ago. However, when she promotes the film and has to sing the song live, she sings the long version. Her friend did not think it would be available as a single. The whole point of the special was to promote the movie, Mulan . If you would like, you can check out my review of the movie (which turned out to be my favorite summer movie!) Here are the final ratings for the Friday airing of "Reflections on Ice." The ratings were a 4.2 and a 9 share. So, approximately 6.7 million views watched the show. It was ranked 82 out of 116 shows, and was tied with Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. On the CBC airing of "Reflections on Ice", they showed something that the ABC airing did not. Here's what Valerie said about it

Also, check out pictures of the program screen shots from the special , and hear the full song in the Michelle's Program Information section of my page. By Bonnie Michelle could not have been more perfect. Them again, that's no surprise. Michelle was absolutely great. She fits the character of Mulan so perfectly. I'm really glad Disney picked her to do this special. Michelle added even more beauty to the wonderful story. I hope she does more specials. She is the BEST! A True Champion with much more than just A Heart of Gold...... By Carol I failed to catch the whole Disney special Tuesday night because I had class from 6:00pm to 8:00pm that evening. Still I managed to watch the second half of the program. My comment? Michelle is absolutely gorgeous! As always, every move she made on the ice is perfect. It's always such an agreeable experience to enjoy her skating as she enjoys herself at the same time. And I love those eyes, full of strength and emotions. Michelle is no doubt No. 1!!!

European Championships History was made on the final day of the 1997 European Figure skating Championships with philippe candeloro (FRA) also skating well to finish fourth. http://www.iceskatingintnl.com/archive/Results/euro97.HTM
Extractions: 1997 European Championships Prepared from notes provided by Klaus Reinhold-Kany, and from ISU press releases. 1997 EUROPEAN FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY FIVE History was made on the final day of the 1997 European Figure Skating Championships (Saturday) at the Palais Omnisport in Paris, France as Irina Slutskaya completed a clean sweep for Russia by winning the gold medal in the Ladies' competition. To date, no nation had ever won the gold medal in all four disciplines at the European Championships. Seventeen year old Slutskaya, the defending champion and world bronze medalist, skated last and won eight first places from the judges. Her program included six triples and although her landings were not all perfect, it was more than enough to take the gold and complete the set for Russia. Krisztina Czako placed fourth in the free skating but held on to her overnight second place to become the first Hungarian skater for 26 years to win a medal in the European ladies event. It was the 18 year old's first international medal success. The bronze medal went to 19 year old Yulia Lavrenchuk (UKR) who placed third in the free to move up from her fifth position in the short. For Lavrenchuk too, it was the first time on the podium at an ISU Championships. Russian national champion Maria Butyrskaya placed second in the free skating but her ninth place in the short program had left her too far adrift to make the podium and she finished fourth overall. Surya Bonaly (FRA), recovering from a major Achilles injury, has not recaptured the form that won her five European titles and could only finish tenth in the free, dropping to ninth place overall. Teammate Vanessa Gusmeroli, third overnight, also had a disappointing afternoon, placing ninth in the free to fall to sixth place overall.

The Champions on Ice tour, which features some of the worlds most talented and recognized figure skaters, has added newly crowned U.S. men's champion Johnny Weir and ice dancing champions Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto to its lineup. U.S. bronze medalist Jennifer Kirk has also been added. This will her first full tour with Champions on Ice. Weir left the crowd in Atlanta spellbound by his performance at the 2004 State Farm U.S. Championships last month. He effortlessly landed eight triple jumps to win his first U.S. medal on the senior level. Belbin and Agosto won their first U.S. title and dazzled the fans with their creative rendition to a medley of songs from "West Side Story" in their free dance. The additions of such high talents as Weir and Belbin and Agosto increase the star studded power to an already electrifying cast. The tour also features Michelle Kwan, who captured her eighth U.S. title in Atlanta, as well as Sasha Cohen, a three-time U.S. silver medalist and one of the top stars in the international circuit this season. Kwan and Cohen are projected to be two of the top stars at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy.
Extractions: Collusion among the judges. Confusion among the public. Domination by the Russians. Those were the themes last week at the world figure skating championships, and though it would be a pleasure to watch Alexei Yagudin jump, Lucinda Ruh spin and Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizerat emote again next year, this sport, which too often resembles a spectacle, had best use the next 12 months wisely. Figure skating is on thin ice. More than five years after the soap-opera saga involving Tonya Harding (the villain) and Nancy Kerrigan (the victim) produced record U.S. prime-time ratings at the 1994 Winter Olympics and a burst of curiosity worldwide, figure skating's popularity and coherence are suffering. Television audiences for traditional events dropped significantly in the United States this season, and interest also has waned in major European markets. Russia, whose skaters are the best in the world, has more pressing concerns. The reigning men's Olympic champion, Ilia Kulik, says he can walk the streets in Moscow and hardly be recognized.

As an Olympic bronze medalist and only 20 years old, it's safe to say Jennifer Kirk is a rising star on the figure skating scene. But Saturday night at the Volpe Center at Merrimack College at the Great Skate fund-raiser, which features a host of figure skating's top names, even she will feel a little starstruck. "I've seen these people on TV since I was a little kid and I am sitting next to them on the bus," Kirk said. "It is a great experience. You get so comfortable. It was a great way for me to grow as a skater. I rediscovered my love of the sport, by being around these amazing athletes. It's such a rewarding experience after all your hard work." But it's not just the stars who will take the ice.
Extractions: Special to The Ukrainian Weekly SIMSBURY, Conn. - Viktor Petrenko was a sickly child when he was growing up in Odesa on the Black Sea. At age 31, the Olympic champion was skating and leaping in Connecticut on March 2-3 to raise money for children suffering deadly and disfiguring diseases in his hometown. "You want to do something in your life to help other people, and when it happens, you feel satisfied," he explained. "Even if only one child feels better, I feel I did what I needed to do." Mr. Petrenko realized he needed to help the children in his part of Ukraine who were dealing with the effects of the nuclear disaster in Chornobyl after he met Nadia and Dr. Zenon Matkiwsky, founders of the Children of Chornobyl Relief Fund (CCRF). They met by chance at the Ukrainian Consulate in New York City two years ago, and last spring they got together again to discuss the possibility of a benefit performance starring Mr. Petrenko and his world-class colleagues. CCRF staff and volunteers organized the event at the International Skating Center of Conn. (ISCC) in Simsbury, home base for Mr. Petrenko and his family since 1994. Together with the strength of Mr. Petrenko's name and the commitment of the center's new partners and staff, the Viktory for Kids ice show raised close to $120,000 after expenses. The proceeds will be used to modernize and equip the new Viktor Petrenko Neonatal Intensive Care Clinic in the Odesa Hospital.
Extractions: WASHINGTON It was a night for successful revivals "Bolero," "The Wild Wild West" and Yuka Sato. An update of Torvill and Dean's dance to "Bolero" complete with jumps, overhead lifts and throws won the pairs title for Elena Leonova and Andrei Khvalko on Saturday night in the World Professional Figure Skating Championship. Philippe Candeloro won the men's competition his first major title as an amateur or professional with a prop-filled skate to music from "The Wild Wild West" soundtrack. And Sato tied the event's record for longest gap between titles. Five years after winning the 1995 championship, the 27-year-old Japanese skater took the women's competition.

He turned one supposed triple jump into a single, then, when he tried to save himself at the end by converting a double Axel to a triple, he fell on his side. It was a bad program from start to finish. "I guess when I finished there were no thoughts," said Eldredge, 26, of Chatham, Mass. "Not about medals, any of that. I wasn't pleased with what I had done. That wasn't the performance I wanted to put out there." If that sounds harsh, well, maybe it would be easier to feel sorry for Eldredge if he had gone out there and attempted a quadruple jump and missed it, then skated the rest of his program as poorly as he did. Then at least he would have a decent excuse. Eldredge didn't. He chose the safe route, the safe program. In golf terms, he laid up. And then he didn't even make par.
