The Guide -- Champions On Ice Fails To Impress You d think an ice skating show featuring Rudy Galindo in a sparkly checkered philippe candeloro, the extremely flamboyant and equally gorgeous http://www.thehoya.com/guide/060303/guide2.cfm
Extractions: Hoya Staff Writer You'd think an ice skating show featuring Rudy Galindo in a sparkly checkered harlequin outfit and Michelle Kwan performing a breathtakingly graceful routine would make for an exciting two hours. But with adrenaline-rushing acts coming too few and far between, Champions on Ice isn't much of a winner. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, this exhibition presents national, world and Olympic champions and showcases the skills of those kings and queens of the rink. Unfortunately, though this years show offers the worlds biggest names in the ice skating world, it also induces its audience to let out some of the worlds biggest yawns. It seems that some of the skaters didnt realize that Champions on Ice isnt a serious competition and that they should have routines to get the audience clapping and dancing in their seats. This is their time to have fun, without any pressure from judges or scores. The crowd is there to be impressed by the skaters energy, and the stars should skate with that in mind. Instead, stars such as Sasha Cohen, a two-time U.S. Nationals silver medallist, Nicole Bobek, U.S. National champion and world bronze medallist in 1995, and a couple of the ice dancing couples seemed set on trying to win the crowd over by skating to songs so slow I actually fell asleep during their time on the ice. Their performances were somewhat impressive, but for entertainments sake and for the audience members who are looking for an eye-popping, jaw-dropping good time, those acts didnt make the cut.

Extractions: What's this? A hardcover novel showing a guy in teal spandex, with a rainbow flag adorning his skating boot? Obviously, Rainbow Ice had to check this out. Turns out author Ben Tyler characterizes Gay Blades as "summer beach reading," a classic tale of the rise and fall of a bad-seed ingenu tour skater ("Tag") who's hiding all sorts of secrets behind his baby face. Along the way, lots of men have lots of sex, especially Tag (who, in one memorable scene, gives new meaning to the phrase "getting hammered"). The book is set in the world of low-rent touring ice shows, but it's not a tell-all. It has nothing to do with eligible competition, either, as Tyler lets us know right off the bat when his protagonist ("Garry") gets thrown out of the American Skating Society (A.S.S.) for being openly gay. Instead, we get a sometimes campy, sometimes hilarious gay male skewering of the tackiness that abounds when talented skaters miss eligible greatness but still want to earn money skating: pruney skating officials, amoral tour operators, catty competition on the show circuit, accommodations slightly less grand than what the Stars on Ice or Tom Collins skaters enjoy (in describing Tag's tryst with a stranger in a Howard Johnson, Tyler notes, "They fell back on the teal-colored bedspread that matched the drapes, that matched the rug, that matched the upholstery on the sitting chair").
Extractions: Petrenko organizes "Viktory for Kids" ice show to benefit CCRF by Alex Kuzma SIMSBURY, Conn. - Just eight weeks before the Chornobyl nuclear disaster's 15th anniversary, Ukraine's figureskating Olympic and world champion Viktor Petrenko invited his friends from the international skating community to help him raise public awareness and funds to help some of the thousands of children still being affected by the world's worst nuclear disaster. On March 2 and 3 here at the International Skating Center of Connecticut Mr. Petrenko headlined an all-star cast that included Olympic and world champion Brian Boitano of the United States, French sensation Philippe Candeloro, an Olympic and world medalist, as well as U.S. silver medalist Sasha Cohen in "Viktory for Kids," a two-night benefit performance for the Children of Chornobyl Relief Fund (CCRF). Proceeds from the sold-out event are earmarked for the creation of the Victor Petrenko Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Mr. Petrenko's hometown of Odesa. In an extensive interview with the Hartford Courant and USA Today, Mr. Petrenko explained his motivation for organizing this unique benefit performance for CCRF. "I received a lot from my city to get where I am today ... That's where I grew up ... That's where I learned to skate ... Now this is my chance to pay them back." Mr. Petrenko described the many people he had seen in Odesa who had survived Chornobyl, only to be stricken with cancer or to see their children stricken with birth defects.

Extractions: An Analysis of the Figure Skating Scoring System In recent months, there has been increasing controversy over the ordinal-based scoring system used in ISU ("amateur" or Olympic-eligible) figure skating competitions. The ordinal system is not well-understood by the general public, and this has led to some results at recent competitions that seem "wrong" (or at least surprising) to people who are not familiar with the details of how figure skating is scored. The argument I make in this article is that the problem is not so much with the scoring system itself indeed, from a statistical point of view it is technically superior to the alternatives that have been proposed but with the failure of the ISU and the media to adequately educate the public. How the ordinal system works The pairs and men's and ladies singles events each consist of two phases, a short program and a free skating program. In dance, there are two compulsory dances, an original dance, and a free dance. The placements of the skaters within each phase are determined independently of the other phases, and then combined by multiplying the placements by a weighting factor to arrive at the overall standings in the competition. The first critical point to understand about the figure skating scoring system is that the marks given to the skaters (on a scale of to 6) have no intrinsic meaning in themselves. Instead, each judge uses the total of their technical and presentation marks to indicate a ranking first, second, third, and so on for each skater relative to the other skaters in the event. It is these rankings, called

Extractions: Wilkes-Barre, PA - November 9, 2000 For the spectator, the most difficult challenge of the Ice Wars competition may have been finding one's way to the First Union Arena in Wilkes-Barre, PA, on a windy, rainy night. The locals were undaunted, and the 8,000-10,000 seat venue was sold out with very few no shows. Seats in the first two tiers were basically filled, and the skinny 3-4 row third tier held many spectators. The crowd was enthusiastic, staying to the very end, and the year old structure had a pleasant warmth about it for an ice event. The ice, lighting, and general organization of the competition seemed just fine, with TV cameras (CBS) in evidence all over the place. The only negativethe hour long wait to get out of the parking lot. Extractions: Sandra Loosemore, CBS SportsLine's figure skating writer , has a mission. She wants to overturn the sport's new scoring system. The traditional system came under fire after the Great Flip-Flop of 1997 at the European Championships. In the men's free-skating event, five competitors had skated, and the first three places were held by Alexei Urmanov, Viacheslav Zagorodniuk, and Philippe Candeloro, in that order. The final contestant, Andrejs Vlascenko, placed dead lastbut in the process he managed to bump Candeloro up to second place, denying Zagorodniuk a silver medal. When the new system was announced in July 1998, Cinquanta rejoiced that the problem was solved, so that henceforth "if you are in front of me, you will remain in front of me."
