Extractions: The third event in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating, the Sparkassen Cup on Ice, concluded in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, on Sunday (results and standings attached). World champion Alexei Yagudin (RUS) won the short program in the men's competition. The first to skate, he presented a near flawless performance of his entertaining circus program with a huge triple axel/triple toeloop combination, a triple lutz and a double axel with fast, well-centred spins and complex footwork. Alexander Abt (RUS), the European bronze medallist who is fighting to win one of the three places in the Russian team for this season's Championships, attempted a quadruple toeloop but two-footed the landing. His technically challenging program included an unusual triple axel/triple loop combination but he again just missed a clean landing. Andrejs Vlascenko (GER) placed third ahead of France's Thierry Cerez. In the ladies' competition Elena Sokolova (RUS), seventh at the Olympics, placed first in the short program. Her jump combination was a triple lutz/double toeloop and she landed a clean triple loop. Her only error was a slip at the end of a fast straight line step sequence. Second was world bronze medallist Maria Butyrskaya (RUS), winner at Skate America, who fell on a triple lutz but performed a fast and complex program to earn high presentation marks. Yulia Lavrenchuk (UKR) placed third, landing a triple lutz/double toeloop as her combination jump and a triple flip.

Extractions: 2002 European Figure Skating Championships: Day Three The 2002 ISU European Figure Skating Championships continued in Lausanne with the Ladies Qualifying Rounds and the finale of the Pairs competition. Ladies, Qualifying Rounds The Ladies' competition started today with the Qualifying Rounds. In group A, defending European Champion Irina Slutskaya of Russia won with teammate Viktoria Volchkova finishing second. Italy's Silvia Fontana came in third. In group B, 1999 World Champion Maria Butyrskaya (Russia) took the lead ahead of Ukraine's Galina Maniachenko and Susanna Pöykiö of Finland. Slutskaya started off her program set to "Tosca" with a high triple Lutz-double loop combination followed by a triple Salchow-double loop. However, the Muscovite then started to struggle. She popped her second Lutz, two-footed the triple loop and fell hard on the double Axel. Nonetheless, the Muscovite landed a triple flip, triple toeloop and she produced excellent spins. "I was surprised, like you guys were. I think everyone was surprised. But it's just the warm up for the competition", Slutskaya said. Volchkova, who skated earlier in the group, put in a good performance that included a triple Salchow-double toeloop combination, three more triples, a double Axel and flowing spirals. She only doubled her second Lutz. Slutskaya stayed ahead by a majority of five to two Judges. "I was very nervous", Volchkova revealed. "But I pulled myself together. Of course, this was not the best I can skate this program. The first day is always hard, because it is important to make the final flight for the short program. I wanted to do the triple-triple (Salchow-toeloop), but my landing on the Salchow wasn't so good, so I didn't want to risk a triple toe. I'm obliged to do it in the free program, otherwise it will be difficult to fight for a medal."

Extractions: Silver Blade Tours Inc. was proud to begin our first tour of the season at the "Keri Lotion Figure Skating Classic," formerly named the Nice N' Easy Figure Skating Classic in Daytona Beach, Florida. Santioned by the United States Figure Skating association (USFSA) and the International Skating Union (ISU), skaters represented the United States, France, Ukraine and Russia, from new and upcoming skaters to World and Olympic Champions. Daytona Beach can now claim another "s" word to sun, sand, and now skating as this prestigious event returned to sunny Florida a second year in a row. How nice to have this event so close to home in DeLand, Florida where Silver Blade Tours, Inc. is based. The Adam's Mark, Daytona Beach Resort , located directly on the beach and across from the Ocean Center, was our place in the sun this first weekend in October. With oceanfront rooms, we had spectacular views of the sun rising over the ocean and a beautiful full moon shining its light over the sea at night. Swimming, shopping and visiting the local sights was on the agenda along with our nights of spectacular skating. This event featured some of the best ladies and men's skaters from around the world. Michelle Kwan, 1998 U.S., Worlds, Goodwill Games Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist headlined the ladies along with fellow Americans Nicole Bobeck, 1995 U.S. Champion, National World and Olympic competitor and Angela Nikodinov, upcoming National competitor. Russian Maria Butyrskaya, 1998 European Champion, World and Olympic competitor, France's Surya Bonaly five time European Champion, World and Olympic competitor, and 1988 Olympic Silver Medalist Elizabeth Manley from Canada, completed the roster of lady skaters.

Alexei Yagudin captured the men's title and Russians Yelena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze won the pairs title with a routine to the music of Charlie Chaplin with comical poses and pauses mixed with the traditional skating. Jennifer Kirk of the U.S. usually was jumping all over the place, but that wasn't enough to win. World champions Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizeret of France rallied to win the ice dance, helped by a 6.0 from the French judge.
Figure Skating Is NOT A Beauty Contest The Los Angeles Times ran an article that claimed figure skating is a sport in which winning a medal maria butyrskaya and Sasha Cohen dress similarly. http://www.frogsonice.com/skateweb/articles/beauty-contest.shtml
Extractions: Figure Skating is NOT a Beauty Contest by Sandra Loosemore February, 2002 During the Olympic Games, it's fairly common for journalists who have little or no background in or knowledge of competitive figure skating to be assigned to write articles about skating. The end result is often articles that simply make fun of the sport, that put mistaken emphasis on aspects of the sport that are in fact trivial, or that contain outright falsehoods about the way skating competitions are conducted or judged. Even before the first skating event of the 2002 games in Salt Lake City, a whole pile of articles have appeared in the mainstream media which have basically been asserting that figure skating is as much a beauty contest as a sport. Specific examples include: On the official SLC 2002 web site , the section on "Figure Skating Basics" asserts that the skaters' appearance is one of the criteria included in the presentation mark. The Los Angeles Times ran an article that claimed figure skating "is a sport in which winning a medal may have as much to do with their appearance on the ice as with their athleticism". This article also suggests that Michelle Kwan owed her win at 1995 Skate America simply to putting on makeup and a "sexy purple dress" without making any mention at all of the improvements in her speed, the complexity of her choreography, and better jumps. The Philadelphia Inquirer devoted an entire article to the subject of makeup worn by skaters. One skater was quoted as saying "All those things count and are very important", while another former competitor suggested that the color of their clothing is even a factor in the judging.

We are very used to seeing cute American girls skate for a couple of years and disappear just as fast. Cohen's most striking feature is her individuality. Perhaps the fact that her mom hails from Odessa was a factor.

Run the program and fill in your nickname in 'file.. settings'. the rest of the fields are optional. In 'file.. settings.. sharing', select the folder where you store your skating files for sharing. you will also need to set the number of upload slots to 1 or more. Next, click on the yellow star icon, then 'new', and fill in 'RinkSide' in the name field and the hub address rinkside.dyndns.org in the address field. You're now ready to connect to the hub (double click on 'RinkSide' in the favorite hubs) and download like crazy. (having problems downloading? try switching from active to passive mode, this does the trick for users behind a firewall/router. if this doesn't work, please refer to the dc++ faq Leave the program running in the background if you can, by minimizing the window to the system tray. This way the program takes very little of your cpu and other users will be very grateful if you can leave your skating files available for them as long as you can. Thanks.

While Volchkova and Soldatova had slightly more difficult jumps, the 26-year-old Butyrskaya was far ahead in the presentation marks, scoring all 5.8s and 5.9s from the nine judges. Soldatova, 17, and the 16-year-old Volchkova each received just one 5.8.
