Extractions: The only comprehensive history of figure skating in over forty years Figure skating, unique in its sublimely beautiful combination of technical precision, musicality, and interpretive elements, has undergone many dramatic developments since the only other history of the sport was published in 1959. This exciting and information-packed new history describes skating's many technical and artistic advances, its important personages, its intrigues and scandals, and its historical high points. Abundant full-color and black-and-white photographs illustrate the text. James R. Hines divides his history into three periods separated by the World Wars. First, he follows functional and recreational ice skating through its evolution into national schools, culminating in the establishment of the International Skating Union and the ascendancy of an international style of skating. Second, he explains the changes that occurred as the sport expanded into the form we recognize and enjoy today. And finally, he shows how skating became increasingly athletic, imaginative, and intense following World War II, as the main focus turned to the skaters themselves. Figure Skating profiles 148 World and Olympic champions as well as others who, in Dick Button's words, "left the sport better because they were in it."

Extractions: Ice skating, which is performed on both recreational and professional levels, is a sport in which participants wearing steel-bladed skates slide around on an indoor or outdoor ice rink. The sport of ice skating using wood and bones for blades originated in Scotland and the Netherlands and was brought to North America by Scottish immigrants in the1700s. The invention of the steel-bladed skate to replace those made of iron gave way to various international competitions. Today, men and women's figure skating and speed skating are also popular events in the Winter Olympics. This section features various resources on ice skating. Yeah, right. Fellas, you are in the midst of two weeks of prime-time figure skating. Yes, by the time the Games end, there will have been 375 hours of coverage on the Peacock family of networks. But the mothership, NBC, will air every single skating event. The women in your house will have a GI Joe Kung Fu grip on the remote. By the time Michelle Kwan wins the gold medal on Feb. 21, you will have established a kiss-and-cry area in the corner of your own personal hell, a place that used to be your living room. The men I work with don't understand my interest in skating. They wonder how I can care about a "sport" in which the winners are determined by judges, most of whom seem to be blind or crooks, or both. The man I live with hates it. One Sunday, while I was watching a skating exhibition, my husband peered over his newspaper long enough to mumble, "Jon-Benets on skates!" Then he picked up a DVD and headed for the basement. He cannot understand why teenagers wear barely-there dresses made of faux see-through material cut to their navels, covered only by sequins. I don't understand it, either. But that's the difference. I don't try to understand it. I simply accept it. I love figure skating. But then, I'm a girl. A girl, who 25 years ago, was completely convinced that she was put on this Earth to be Dorothy Hamill Junior.

[Ice Hockey] HISTORY When people think of contemporary figure skating they envision the beauty of graceful balletic movements and the power of athletic jumps and spins performed to beautiful, moving music. These elements, coupled with flowing designer costumes and the distinctive swish of blades cutting ice as the athletes crisscross the arena in the heightened tension of competition, engender figure skating as we know it today. The origins of skating, however, were much more banal. Early man, out of the necessity of traversing frozen bodies of water, developed makeshift skates by binding the rib bones of elk or reindeer antlers to their feet with leather straps as a means of transportation across these icy surfaces. Even today the Dutch word for skate is schenkel , which means leg bone . The oldest pair of skates were found at the bottom of a lake in Switzerland and have been determined to be over 4,000 years old. These skates now reside in a museum in Berne, Switzerland.
