I feel as if Ive known her since I was 5 years old." International Figure Skating (IFS) in 1996. Baiul was only 16 when she spun her way to an Olympic gold medal in Lillehammer, Norway. Overnight, the 95-pound waif, an orphan who used to sleep alone in deserted ice rinks, became an international darling. While still in her teens, she commanded up to $2 million a year in earnings. A high-speed car crash, an embarrassing hotel incident and negative publicity while on tour forced her to rethink her lifestyle and her future. "I was thinking about quitting," she admits. "I hadnt skated for about six months, which is an awfully long time when youre someone at the top. Then, last summer, Natalia called me. She said, How are you doing? Can you come and skate here?" "I said, Oh, okay. Whatever. At that point, I really didnt know what I was going to do. So, I came. The first time I stepped on this ice, I did a couple of crossovers and I knew it was right. Ive been here for about two months, and now I cant wait to start competing again."

AP CHICAGO (AP) Oksana Baiul lay in bed last November, tossing and turning, crying as if she would never stop. She had a gold medal, adoring fans all over the world and a second chance after what could have been a deadly car crash. And yet she was dreadfully unhappy. "I think I had a nervous breakdown, because I was so out of control," she said Thursday. "I was so unhappy for the last couple of years, yes. Because of my skating, my situation, I felt like I was so alone in this world. It was so hard for me to take help from other people. "I decided, if I won't go to rehab, if I won't try to change my life, then I'll die soon," she said. "And I didn't want that. So that's why I changed my life. I just wanted to be a happy person, like everyone wants."

Extractions: Ukrainian ice skater Oksana Baiul's life could have been a Dickens-like tragedy. But the girl who was orphaned at 13 blossomed into one of the world's brightest skaters. Her graceful, pixie-ish appearance belies a tough inner core that helped her overcome loss and battle alcoholism. Baiul was born in the city of Dnepropetrovsk, in her native Ukraine. When she was just two, Baiul's father left, and she and her mother moved in with her beloved grandparents. It was Baiul's grandpa who bought the girl her first pair of ice skates. She was a natural. At seven, Baiul won her first competition. When Baiul was 10 years old, both of her grandparents died unexpectedly, and three years later, her mother succumbed to ovarian cancer. Devastated, Baiul threw herself into skating with a passion. When famed Russian figure skating coach Galina Zmievskaya came to see the young girl skate, she was bowled over. She invited Baiul to move to Odessa and train with her. Under Zmievskaya's tutelage, Baiul hit the big time, winning the '93 World Championships and taking home the gold at the '94 Olympics in Lillehammer (she beat out U.S. hopeful Nancy Kerrigan). Immediately following her Olympic triumph, Baiul moved to the United States and turned to the professional circuit. Fame, money and the freedom of the West thrust the pixie-like skater into a fast-paced, celebrity lifestyle she wasn't quite ready for. Buckling under the stress of numerous back and knee injuries brought on by sudden growth spurts, Baiul began skipping practices and dove headfirst into party-girl mode.

Extractions: The life of sweet little girl was not so sweet. When Oksana was ten years old, her grandfather died, very unexpectedly. One year later her grandmother became very sick and died. Her life changed because a big part of her family was missing. In 1994 Oksana went to European Championships and won silver medal again. The most important time was coming up. It was the 1994 Olympic Winter Games. She began preparing herself for the most important competition in her life. Oksana had chosen a great piece of music, Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky, for the short program. The time came for Olympic Games. Oksana skated the short program perfectly, but she was in the second place. It was a good spot... She had to get better scores from judges on the long program to win but she could not afford a single mistake.

Extractions: DATELINE NEW YORK: Olympic star prepares to shine again by Helen Smindak After a two-year hiatus, Olympic gold medalist and world figure skating champion Oksana Baiul is making a comeback into the realm of professional figure skating. Now in training in Virginia, she plans to return to the professional skating circuit in September, joining Katarina Witt and her friends in Bridgeport, Conn., to prepare for the November start of Ms. Witt's new touring show. Speaking to me by phone from Richmond, Ms. Baiul sounded excited yet poised about the prospect of going out on the ice and thrilling fans again. "I'm working my butt off, I want to be as good as I can," she said, "and I've got my coach from 1994 - Valentin Nikolayev - supervising my training. I'm continuing to design my skatewear fashions, for which a new catalogue has just been published, and I'm looking forward to a very exciting time." She's also engaged, she told me, to "a wonderful guy from Ukraine who's in the sportswear business. His name is Gene Sunik, he's from Kharkiv, he's the owner of North-Sportif outerwear in New York, and he's also helping me with my designs." The two met at a Christmas party in Bayside, Queens, when Mr. Sunik's childhood friend invited him to the party and a co-worker brought along Ms. Baiul. So far, there are no definite wedding plans - "hopefully, next summer," according to Ms. Baiul.
