Extractions: Barry Mittan Russia's Alexander Abt has had so many injuries that you'd think a black cloud was hanging over his head. His career started auspiciously with a silver medal at the 1991 World Junior Championships and he was a strong contender at the Russian Nationals starting the next year, coming in fourth in both 1993 and 1994. But the injury bug started biting in 1995 when he injured his hip and couldn't compete at Europeans. The next year, Abt wrecked his right knee at the NHK Trophy, missing the remainder of the season as he recovered from knee surgery. But the worst was yet to come. While skating in a Russian team exhibition in Mexico City in August 1996, Abt fell awkwardly coming down from a jump and crashed into the barrier with his leg twisted the wrong way and his blade imbedded in his right thigh. A broken leg and severely torn muscles required surgery which kept him in a Mexican hospital for two weeks as doctors debated whether he would ever walk again, much less skate. But Abt proved them wrong, although he was completely off the ice for six months. He was forced to relearn all his jumps before he could compete again, but returned in time for Russian Nationals, finishing back in the pack. Abt performed well for the next few seasons, but then had to go under the knife again in 1998 to rebuild his left knee, again missing the Russian Nationals and failing to make the World team. Last year, he underwent more surgery; to remove a cyst from his sinuses after a sinus infection at the 2002 Europeans had left him so weak that he collapsed in the kiss and cry.

Since only the two declared/assigned competition result points count, and I only know the assigned competitions for the top seeded competitors, I suffer from some confusion over the point tally for the unseeded competitors who have competed in more than 2 events. These are emphasized in the Championship Series participants list. Extractions: N E W S Natalia Linichuk and Gennadi Karponosov June 7 Aleksei Yagudin quit touring in order to go to Russia to be with Tatiana Tarasova , who is recovering from a mild heart attack. Tarasova has acquired a new student, Irina Nicolaevna , who was recently 4th at Junior World Championships. June 7 Shelby Lyons, an American pair skater, and her partner will be training with Natasha Mishkutyonok and her husband Craig Shephard. Marina Zueva will also be helping them with their choreography. June 4 Oksana Kazakova and Artur Dmitriev have finally decided to go pro, according to their coach Tamara Moskvina . Apparently, they are both satisfied with this decision. We will miss them in the eligible ranks. May 3 Alexander Abt has posted an interview on his official website. News within the interview: he is planning on creating at least a new free program for next season, if not a new short program. He will be going to a training camp this summer and will resume on-ice training in July, IF his problems with his rink in Moscow are solved. It seems that his rink does not want to give him enough practice time. He is also working on a quadruple salchow. May 3 Aleksei Yagudin and Oleg Ovsiannikov have recently been experiencing visa problems. Yagudin has apparently been able to fix his, but not in time for the Edge Against Cancer event.
Extractions: THE SHOW WAS A HIT! Thank you to everyone who supported us and participated in this event...To everyone who watched the show, we hope you enjoyed it! It was a magical night at the Madison Square Garden as renowned figure skaters and special guests gathered together to pay tribute to the heroes of September 11 and to aid in a worthy cause. , a figure skating fundraising gala, featured champion skaters such as Nancy Kerrigan, Sasha Cohen, Viktor Petrenko, Timothy Goebel, Surya Bonaly, Nicole Bobek, Lucinda Ruh, Alexander Abt, Maya Usova & Evgeny Platov, Naomi Lang & Peter Tchernyshev, Tiffany Scott & Philip Dulebohn, Vladimir Besedin & Oleksiy Polishchuk, and The Ice Theatre of New York. The event raised money for the "9/11 Families Give Back" fund, which provides scholarships to children that have been affected by acts of crime or terror since September 11, 2001. Special guests included Secretary of State Randy Daniels, film actor Steve Buscemi, actress Hallie Kate Eisenberg, Jamie Lynn Spears and Jack DeSena from Nickolodeon's "All That," singer Tracy Bonham, soprano Lisa Layman, paralympian Amy Mullins, Olympians Chris Soule, Donna Weinbrecht, Jojo Starbuck, and Dick Button. Highlights of the night included a kids' group performance and a hockey skate-off between the NYPD, FDNY, and the PAPD. Melissa Ielpi, who helped organize the event, also skated in memory of her brother Jonathan, a New York firefighter who died in the 9/11 tragedy.

Extractions: Ice Dance ... emotional impact , and I have come to really respect Lori Nichol. She knows what she's doing. Bereshnaya and Sikuralidzev are very good at their particular kind of artistry; they're balletic and lyrical, they have beautiful execution and exquisite positions, and of course technically they're perfect, except when they choke Shen and Zhao still had to skate. Oh, and I forgot to mention: it sucked for them too, big time. Their thunder got all stolen, and they don't deserve that. Other people the judges screwed include Ina and Zimmerman, who finally won me over with their program this time, but failed to convince the judges that they were better than that stupid second-string Russian pair, whose West Side Story is a textbook illustration of how *not* to produce the kind of effect that Love Story achieves. But you know what, they know they kicked ass, and that was the best thing about it. They were really happy with how they skated, and so were Sale and Pelletier; and nobody can take that away from them no matter how bought and paid that person might be. So we move on to the Other Russian, the wild, wacky and weirdness-wearin' Yevgeny Pleshenko, who per usual slid out onto the ice wrapped in Mylar and covered in rhinestones. For Pleshenko, looking like he's wearing someone's mirrored ceiling is totally normal. Falling on his shiny besparkled ass, though, that's not normal at all. I would suspect foul play, only I don't like him enough. The commentator team was talking about a groin injury; well, when you watch him do a Biellman, you can understand how that kind of thing might easily happen to him. I hope it's not going to turn out that Yagudin somehow slipped him a mickey before he got out there.
