Extractions: Alexander Abt... by Marge Reynolds For 23 year-old Russian Alexander Abt, making the European and World Team this year represented the end of a long journey. At the 2000 Russian Nationals in December, he won the bronze medal and a coveted spot on each team. " It was a dream come true", his coach Arutunian said. Abt wed Elena Pavlova, a former Russian ice dancer, on April 23, 1999 in his native Moscow and feels marriage has helped his skating. He currently spends three hours a day training in the ice and goes to the gym twice a day." After that I have a life", explained Abt. " I eat, sleep, and spend time with my wife. Before April 23, I was just a skater and now I have a wife who shares my life. She still needs to change her name on her passport. I would like to bring her to my skating competitions when I can afford it. " His wife is from Samara, Russia, and competed with her twin brother. " We dated for three years and our wedding was a lot of fun, a big party," said Abt. He and his wife recently became parents; their baby boy, Makar, was born on March 3. " Alexander is very organized on the ice, but he wasn't organized in his (personal) life", said coach Arutunian. " His wife, Elena is very organized and she now takes care of everything for him. They still live with his parents in Moscow but they hope to have their own apartment soon."

Extractions: Russian Alexander Abt's career has not been easy. In his rise to the elite ranks, he suffered a number of serious setbacks, including hip injuries and knee surgeries, and he recently underwent surgery to remove cysts from his sinuses. But an accident in Mexico in 1996 proved his most serious challenge: he sliced his right thigh muscles with his own skate blade, forcing him to not only relearn all of his jumps, but even to walk. "It was almost like having a new leg," Abt recalled. At the time, his coach Rafael Arutunian said, "He has one leg that has been skating for many years, and the other leg has been skating for a year." But Abt prevailed and was soon back at the top of his game, winning bronze medals at the 1998 European Championships and at the last 2 Russian Nationals. He finished fourth at the 2001 European Championships, despite a sinus ailment that caused him to collapse after his free skate in the kiss and cry area. He finished eighth at the 2001 World Championships, then went home to Moscow for surgery on his sinuses. He and his coach have since moved to Lake Arrowhead, Calif., to train at the Ice Castle Training Center which has an altitude that should help him with his stamina throughout the Olympic season. Salt Lake City's altitude is not as high as Denver or Colorado Springs, but it is significant enough to make altitude training a plus.

No one else in his family is involved in any sports. Unfortunaly this outstandingly talented and musical skater has been handicapped by various injuries. Smena, St. Petersburg, January 14, 2004 Alexander Abt: I cant do it anymore After the ill-fated short program, Alexander Abt withdrew due to a groin injury from the Russian Championships and then announced the end of his amateur career. During the exhibition, his festive farewell took place. At the Russian Championships that went on in Jubileini in December 1993, coach Rafael Arutunian convinced the journalists with his usual passion: Pay attention to Sascha Abt. Hell draw attention in the next Olympic cycle and can contend for a medal in Nagano. This prognosis, unfortunaly, didnt come true. Responsible for this are dramatic if not tragic circumstances. In 1995 Alexander gets seriously injured during a performance in Japan, the year after this, he suffers not just a serious but a very serious injury in Mexico. It was very well possible that the skater would be disabled for his whole life. In any case thats what the doctors in Mexico said. Abt didnt give up, he wasnt only able to get back into shape, but also to achieve a new level (of skating). In the Olympic season he almost beat the future Olympic Champion Alexei Yagudin a few weeks before Salt Lake City at the European Championships in Lausanne. According to many skating specialists, he in fact did beat him, and just the authority of Tatiana Tarasovas student made it possible for him to win the free skating with six to three votes of the judges. I understand that this is my only chance to perform at the Olympics, and Ill try to use it to the maximum, Alexander told the correspondent of Smena in Lausanne.

Extractions: Grand Prix of Figure Skating - Skate America, Day Three Skate America in Spokane, Washington, continued Saturday with the Free Dance and the Men's and Ladies' Free Programs. Ice Dancing, Free Dance World bronze medalists Galit Chait/Sergei Sakhnovski (ISR) remained in fourth place. Skate America was a scoring event for all top ranked couples. Grushina/Goncharov received 12 points and will score again at the Trophée Lalique in Paris, France. Navka/Kostomarov took 9 points and will compete again at the Cup of Russia. Belbin/Agosto picked up 7 points and their next event is the Trophée Lalique. Ladies, Free Program Four-time World Champion Michelle Kwan (USA) claimed her seventh Skate America title and thus set a new record for the event. Teammate Ann-Patrice McDonough moved up from sixth place to capture the silver medal while Elena Liashenko of the Ukraine took the bronze. The Ladies pushed the limits in this competition as Liudmila Nelidina (RUS) and Yukari Nakano (JPN) landed triple Axels. It has been ten years since Midori Ito executed a triple Axel in competition (at the 1992 Olympic Winter Games in Albertville, France). So far Ito and Tonya Harding (USA) were the only Ladies to perform this element in competition. The ISU Referee of the competition ratified Nelidina's and Nakano's Axel as landed, but added that Nakano's wasn't technically completely clean as it was slightly under rotated. Skate America was a points event for all three medalists. Kwan has 12 points but probably will not compete in another Grand Prix event. McDonough got 9 points and will score again at the Cup of Russia. Liashenko collected 7 points and her second scoring event is the Trophée Lalique.

Extractions: Kathleen Bangs When Alexander "Sasha" Abt skated his Wonderful World exhibition at the 2002 World Championships in Nagano, television commentators sadly announced that his competitive days were most likely over and that he probably would not be returning for another eligible season. At that time, this appeared to be the case - Abt was burned out and ready to move on. But the 2002 European silver medalist sat down with coach, friend, and former World Ice Dance Champion, Alexander Zhulin, who told him he was making a mistake. Abt re-considered, a new partnership was formed, and last season, the duo made impressive progress as Abt won three Grand Prix medals and the Russian National title. As has often been the case in this twenty-seven year old athlete's career, disaster struck soon after in the form of injury. Just one day before Abt was scheduled to fly to the European Championships, he fell on a jump at practice, seriously injuring his landing ankle. After a tremendous start to the season, Abt was forced to withdraw from the event, as well as the World Championships. Despite the injury, Abt skated a record number of shows and exhibitions over the past year, and performed as the headliner with Prince Ice World tours in Japan. Now, after almost ten months since his last competitive event, Abt is back and ready to compete with a spectacular new program, the sensual flamenco
