Extractions: Devils Flyers Islanders Penguins ... The addition of Miroslav Satan to the Isles' roster means that enigmatic center Alexei Yashin will finally have a top-tier winger playing alongside him. Look for Yashin and Satan to have huge years on Long Island, with both players scoring at or above a point-per-game average. ISLANDERS PLAYER NEWS Alexei Zhitnik Zhitnik has signed a four-year deal with the Islanders, and he will be expected to fill the giant shoes of departing defenseman Adrian Aucoin. The 32-year-old Russian should be up to the task; he's extremely solid defensively and a very underrated power play quarterback, much like the man he's replacing. Get Inside Alexei Yashin The arrival of Miroslav Satan means that Yashin will have a top-tier winger by his side for the first time since he arrived on Long Island in 2001. Look for Yashin and Satan to develop immediate chemistry: both players should deliver All-Star caliber performances with the NHL's new offense-enhancing rules. Get Inside Michael Peca The embattled captain's time with the Islanders generated mixed reviews. On the one hand, he brought the team back to the playoffs for the first time since 1994. On the other, he never really established himself as well as he did in Buffalo previously, and the Islanders did not win a single playoff series during his three-year stint on Long Island. Now Peca gets the chance to start over in Edmonton, helping Chris Pronger lead that storied franchise back to glory.
INSIDE HOCKEY: "Could It Be... Satan?" By Kevin Greenstein Insidehockey.com Inside hockey is the ultimate hockey site. Islanders signeddefenceman alexei zhitnik to a four-year, $14 million US deal on Tuesday, http://www.insidehockey.com/greenstein/2005_08_03d.php
Extractions: Could It Be... Satan? by Kevin Greenstein The New York Islanders have finally found an appropriate sniper to pair with Alexei Yashin. Free agent forward Miroslav Satan has signed a three-year deal with the Isles. Satan became an unrestricted free agent last week when the Buffalo Sabres opted not to give him a qualifying offer. Without question, Satan will be the most talented winger to line up alongside Yashin since the enigmatic Russian arrived on Long Island back in 2001. Yashin has struggled mightily with the Isles, but the combination of Satan's arrival and the implementation of offense-enhancing rules should enable the supremely talented center to re-emerge as a legitimate star. Peca was scheduled to make $3.99 million this season, while York is a restricted free agent who should cost significantly less. Alexei Yashin's $7.6 million contract has become a bit of an albatross for the Isles, and GM MIke Milbury will need to be extremely creative if he is to build a Cup contender while the underperforming Russian center takes up nearly 20% of the allowable payroll.

Extractions: UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Jagr's arrival thrills Bondra It is very easy to tell when the Washington Capitals' Peter Bondra gets truly excited - his grasp of the English language starts to slip. This has happened quite often lately, especially when he discusses playing with the newest Cap in town, Jaromir Jagr. "You stop to think about it - wow, the Washington Capitals are able to actually have such a player like Jagr," Bondra said. "It's amazing. He's the best player in the world. (Owner) Ted Leonsis said he was going to do it and he did." Jagr is expected to help erase the team's annual playoff shortcoming: a severe lack of offense. The Caps hope he can make a major contribution with Bondra on the power play, which was solid for Washington last season. "Jagr is the type of player who can make all the players around him better," Bondra said. "He can make a 20-goal scorer a 40-goal scorer; he can make a 40-point player into an 80-point player. His presence on the ice attracts the other team's defenders because of who he is, and that opens up a lot of ice for everybody else." "And he is the type of player who is going to score a goal when the team most needs it. You don't have many players like that around the league, maybe two or three, and he's one of them," Bondra noted.

Extractions: UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Hawerchuk recalls first All-Star selection Dale Hawerchuk arrived with the Winnipeg Jets in September of 1981 after being the first overall choice in the previous spring's entry draft. The Jets were coming off a difficult 32-point season, in which they won just nine of 80 regular season games. Hawerchuk was one of the most highly regarded rookies to come along in some time and he helped the Jets make a tremendous aboutface in the standings. Instead of nine games, they won 33 in Hawerchuk's rookie season. Instead of 32 points, they registered 80 and managed to qualify for the playoffs. Hawerchuk's amazing season - his 103 points is still the third-highest rookie point total in NHL history - earned him an invitation to the 1982 All-Star Game, held in Landover, Md. "I knew I was having a good year, but as a rookie, you don't know if you're going to get picked or not," recalled Hawerchuk. "I think back then, they used to pick one guy from each team after the first line was picked. I knew I had a shot, but Dave Babych [a fellow Ukrainian to boot] was also there and he was having a great year on defense. "I'll tell you, it's a great feeling when they pick you, especially when you're only 18 years old."

Bure decided instead to follow a number of other stars from the Red Army Team to the NHL. In 1991, Bure signed with the Vancouver Canucks. His star rose rapidly: Dubbed the "Russian Rocket," Bure put together two stellar 60-goal/100 point seasons. As early as 1993, however, Bure was mentioned in reports of NHL players being extorted by Russian organized crime. Later, Bure was linked as a friend and business associate of Anzor Kikalishvili, the head of the 21st Century Association, a sports/entertainment marketing company that law enforcement officials believe is a front for illegal activities. Bure is beginning his eighth NHL season, now playing for the Florida Panthers. (read his interview) Valeri Kamensky grew up in Voskresensk, Russia a small town some fifty miles from Moscow which has produced some of the nation's best hockey players. In 1991, Kamensky became the second player from Voskresensk to make the move to the NHL, landing with the Quebec Nordiques. Kamensky reportedly played a key role in helping a reputed Russian mobster, Vyacheslav Sliva, enter Canada in 1994. Kamensky is said to have prevailed upon Quebec Nordique officials to officially request a visa for Sliva, whose criminal background could potentially have blocked his travel. In their letter of reference, the Nordiques claimed that Sliva "is a friend of one of our players." Kamensky starred for several years with the Colorado Avalanche, the name of the relocated Nordique franchise, helping the Avalanche to a Stanley Cup. In July, 1999, Kamensky signed a rich four-year $17 million contract to play for the New York Rangers.
