Extractions: 30 Former Collegians Invited to U.S. Olympic Camp The 2006 U.S. Olympic Team that will compete in Torino, Italy, in February is assured of having a strong college hockey presence. Thirty of the 39 players invited to September's U.S. Olympic Orientation Camp, which USA Hockey announced today, played college hockey. Don Waddell, the former Northern Michigan star who is general manager of the U.S. team, made the announcement. The camp will be held Sept. 5-8 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Former Olympians such as Bill Guerin, Keith Tkachuk, Doug Weight, Chris Drury, Aaron Miller, Brian Rafalski and Brian Rolston headline what is largely a young group, featuring two players who were in college as recently as 2003-04 (Zach Parise and Ryan Suter). The 30 players represent 19 schools, with Boston University, St. Cloud State and Wisconsin leading the way with three representatives apiece. Boston College, Lake Superior State, Michigan State, Minnesota and North Dakota each have two former players invited. "The orientation camp will be a terrific opportunity for our staff to come together with the candidates for our Olympic Team to assess the potential make-up of our squad," Waddell said. "It will not be a tryout camp as the evaluation process will continue throughout the first part of the NHL season, however, it will be an important first step in the total process."

Extractions: May 20, 2004 Former Wildcat Ty Conklin named to Team USA for 2004 World Cup of Hockey COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. USA Hockey today named 26 players, including 14 members of the silver-medal winning 2002 U.S. Men's Olympic Ice Hockey Team, and 13 returners from the 1996 squad that raised the World Cup of Hockey trophy, to the United States roster that will compete at the World Cup of Hockey 2004. The U.S. is the defending champion of the World Cup of Hockey, having defeated Canada, 5-2, in the third game of a best-of-three final series in 1996, which was the last time the event took place. The World Cup of Hockey 2004 will be held August 30-September 14 across North America and Europe. "Our goal was to assemble the ideal team for a seven-game playoff series in which every game is a seventh game," said Pleau. "We examined a number of factors including experience, youth, energy, speed and versatility, while considering an overall team chemistry that allows us to gel as we move through the tournament. We are very pleased with those we have selected to represent the United States, and excited about the challenge of defending the championship in the World Cup of Hockey." Fifteen forwards were selected to the roster, nine of whom competed in the World Cup of Hockey 1996: Tony Amonte (Hingham, Mass./Philadelphia Flyers), Bill Guerin (Wilbraham, Mass./Dallas Stars), Brett Hull (Belleville, Ont./Detroit Red Wings), Steve Konowalchuk (Salt Lake City, Utah/Colorado Avalanche), Mike Modano (Livonia, Mich./Dallas Stars), Brian Rolston (Flint, Mich./Boston Bruins), Bryan Smolinski (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Senators), Keith Tkachuk (Melrose, Mass./St. Louis Blues), and Doug Weight (Warren, Mich./St. Louis Blues). Extractions: E-mail ... Discuss The future of the NHL: Going up or down? 04:58 PM CDT on Wednesday, July 27, 2005 By MIKE HEIKA / The Dallas Morning News A whole new world, right? That's what this lost NHL season was about. A new economic system to help owners and balance the playing field for small-market teams. A dose of rule changes to bring excitement back to the game. And a new marketing plan to get people to appreciate the stars of the league. So now that we know the particulars of the new agreement and the specifics of the rule changes, how will this affect the NHL? Will this be the new world that's expected or will it simply be a repackaged version of the old junk? Here's a vote that says the changes will help and that at least a few teams will be seriously affected. Who and how? Here are five teams that should see positive changes and five that could struggle: POSITIVES Edmonton The Oilers found a way to stay competitive in the old economic system, so it's a good bet that GM Kevin Lowe should be able to flourish in the new one. It's not so much that Edmonton will be able to get more players, it's just that the Oilers should have a much better chance of keeping their own.
