Facts About "Making It" In Professional Hockey Does it matter where my son plays minor hockey if he has professional or collegiatehockey aspirations? webb, Stephen. RW. Peterborough. NYIFA-96 http://www.nepeanhockey.on.ca/Docs/MakingIt.htm
Extractions: STRAIGHT FACTS ABOUT MAKING IT IN PRO HOCKEY An analysis of "What Hockey Doesn't Have to Offer" By Jim Parcels - January 1999 jparcels@omha.net What are the chances of making it in professional hockey? Does it matter where my son plays minor hockey if he has professional or collegiate hockey aspirations? Those are questions that are asked every year by parents, players and coaches alike across the minor hockey community. As an employee of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) I have had the opportunity to work with the largest grass roots hockey organization in the world. It is a position that has allowed me to analyze the minor programs of over 300 associations in southern Ontario as well as other local programs across the country. Working the past three years with the OMHA has led me to ask parents what they really think the game is for. Is minor hockey provided as an avenue to the National Hockey League? Is minor hockey designed to develop players who are aspiring to attain a hockey scholarship? Was minor hockey designed to develop skills, community spirit and teamwork?

Fregoe scored the first of his three goals at the 5:16 mark of the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Union regained the lead as Matt Blabac recorded his first goal of the season. The Friars quickly responded as Fregoe notched his second goal of the game to make the score, 2-2. Senior Jon DiSalvatore (S. Windsor, Conn.) and sophomore Eric Lundberg (Vernon, Conn) assisted on the goal. DiSalvatore finished with three assists and is three points shy of reaching his 100th career point. The Friars scored two goals over a 1:18 span late in the second period to take over the game. Senior Shawn Weiman (Marshall, Sask.) collected a loose puck in front of the net and put the Friars up, 3-2. Moments later while the Friars were short handed, DiSalvatore made a strong rush and fired a shot, which was saved by Union goaltender Tim Roth. Fregoe capitalized on the rebound and finished off his three-goal evening with nine seconds remaining in the second period. Junior Peter Zingoni finished off the scoring for the night as he rifled a wrist shot at 8:15. Fregoe's hat trick was the first for a PC player since Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) scored three goals against Maine on February 16, 2002.

At 14-13-5 overall, the Big Green had back-to-back winning records for the first time since 1978 through 1980. Dartmouth is 30-27-9 overall in the last two years and 21-8-4 at Thompson Arena. Looking back at the transformation of the Big Green, one might credit the hiring of head coach Bob Gaudet '81 and the seven members in the graduating Class of 2002. Chris Baldwin, Dan Casella, Jamie Herrington, Gary Hunter, Mike Maturo, Frank Nardella and Chris Taliercio played the starring roles on the ice and capped off solid careers with a second straight trip to the ECAC Championships held at Lake Placid. At the start of the 2001-2002 campaign, hopes were high after the annual preseason polls were released. Dartmouth was picked to finish fourth by the coaches and second by the media.
