Extractions: BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - With microphone in hand and the camera rolling, Dave Maley bantered easily with left-hander Josh Kalinowski, a pitcher with the minor league Bridgeport Bluefish, during pregame warmups. Maley asked about family and life in professional sports, something he knows intimately after spending nearly a decade in the NHL. When the brief interview ended, the former left-winger immediately turned to the cameraman. "Was that long enough? Should I look at the camera when I interview?" he asked. Maley got answers to those questions and a lot more during a play-by-play announcer seminar for retired NHL players. Maley was one of seven former and active hockey players participating in a weeklong workshop offered by Quinnipiac University's Life After Hockey program. The program, which began in September 2002, is run through the school's Professional Athlete Transition Institute. A career counseling and continuing education program, it's a joint effort of the NHL, the NHL Alumni Association, the NHL Players' Association and Quinnipiac. It's free to anyone who has played at least one game in the NHL, said director Duncan Fletcher. That means about 3,500 players are eligible for the program.

Extractions: Monday, June 20, 2005 Lisa Burns, assistant professor of media studies/public relations, lectures to current and former professional hockey players. Former and current professional hockey players scored a different kind of goal last week, gaining knowledge at a five-day sports broadcasting workshop held on campus and, of all places, a baseball stadium. Quinnipiac's innovative Life After Hockey program , designed to help athletes make the transition from on-ice to on-air, taught the hockey pros television, radio and writing skills to improve their knowledge of the game. The program gives them an edge as they seek work as sports announcers, analysts, interviewers and color commentators. "I've been looking for something like this. I saw this and I jumped at it," said Phil Bourque, who played wing and defense during his pro career with the Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators. Bourque works as a radio color analyst for the Penguins, but never had any formal broadcast training.
Extractions: Monday, June 13, 2005 NHL alumni Dave Maley, who first joined the NHL in 1985 as a Montreal Canadian, left, and current NHL player Jason York of the Nashville Predators are among the current and former NHL players who are spending the week in the School of Communications learning to become play-by-play broadcasters. The Professional Athlete Transition Institute at Quinnipiac University (PATI) is hosting several current and retired National Hockey League players for a workshop on how to move from player to play-by-play announcer in the School of Communications. "The workshop is open to any NHL alumni to give those individuals interested in pursuing careers in sports broadcasting the opportunity to build their skill set in order to make the transition easier into the sports broadcasting world," said Duncan Fletcher, PATI Director and program manager. The workshop, which runs through June 17, is being offered as part of PATI's Life After Hockey program, which assists both current and former NHL players in the transition to non-athletic careers. The workshop is primarily taking place in the new HDTV studio in the Ed McMahon Mass Communications Center. On Wednesday, June 15, the players will head to Bridgeport, Conn. to announce a Bridgeport Bluefish minor league baseball game.

Coffey had 11 goals and 29 assists in 69 games this past season, and says "I feel like I'm skating better now than I did when I was 25 years old." I, for one, would love to see Coffey come to Toronto. He could add that experience our defencive corps needs.
