It took more than a year of coaxing and prodding, but the Phoenix Coyotes finally have the greatest player in hockey behind the bench coaching the team. The Coyotes will have an afternoon news conference today to announce that managing partner Wayne Gretzky will come out of the owner's box and become their head coach, the East Valley Tribune (Mesa) reported. The Arizona Republic and ESPN.com confirmed the report. Gretzky will have three assistant coaches former Red Wings associate coach Barry Smith, former Coyote Rick Tocchet and Rick Bowness, a former Phoenix assistant who ended the 2003-04 season as interim head coach in place of the fired Bob Francis, the Tribune said. The 44-year-old Gretzky first expressed interest in Phoenix's job last summer and agreed in principle to a deal several months ago, according to the Tribune. The deal is believed to be open-ended, and will be reviewed on a year-to-year basis. In recent weeks, Gretzky has agonized over the decision due to family issues his mother is ill in Brantford, Ontario, and his wife and children have become ingrained in their southern California life, leading some news outlets to report he would pass on the position.

Well, at least not in title. But he is going to be judge and jury. Bank on it. As part-owner and director of hockey operations, Gretzky has a most definitive plan for success and it will involve change. The change begins with a new attitude. "The thought has to be winning Stanley Cups," Gretzky said. "That hasn't been the case around here in the past." How does a first-time NHL executive facing the same budget constraints as the outgoing owner suddenly stroll in and change 13 consecutive years of playoff futility? The Phoenix franchise hasn't won a playoff series since 1987 - 10 years before the club relocated from Winnipeg. Until he formally takes control along with partner Steve Ellman, Gretzky won't reveal his strategy in any detail. Though he likes the general look of the roster, Gretzky will plug a few holes with some major additions. He continues to have ongoing conversations with the agent for unsigned goalie Nikolai Khabibulin. Khabibulin was given a take-it-or-leave-it contract proposal last fall by owner Richard Burke and GM Bobby Smith. The goalie walked, thumbing his nose at the Coyotes, and wound up starring in the International League. That's not where you want your No. 1 netminder.

An NHL source in New York confirmed Friday the new agreement will scrub the 2006 NHL All-Star Weekend, scheduled for Glendale Area, so the players can participate in the Winter Olympic Games in Turin, Italy. This is one of the few concessions made to the players in the agreement, which in effect gives the owners almost everything they were seeking when the lockout began Sept. 15. The Coyotes have already been told that the next opportunity for Arizona to host an All-Star Game will be 2010. The 2007 and 2008 games have been committed to Dallas and Atlanta, respectively, while the league plans to honor the 100th anniversary of the Montreal Canadiens in 2009 by holding the game there. An NHL source also confirmed Friday that Wayne Gretzky will be officially introduced as coach of the Coyotes about seven to 10 days after the collective bargaining agreement is ratified by the league's board of governors and the NHL Players' Association.
