His feistiness had no noticeable decline. Even though Barnaby's career with the Sabres probably will be over this summer because he has had a falling out with management, he still could be a significant factor in the playoffs. He's a big hitter, a momentum changer, a psyche disturber. He's the guy in the Civil War movie who picks up the dropped flag and carries it straight into cascading cannon fire. He has never had an NHL playoff goal, but you wouldn't bet against him getting one if the game is on the line. He goes to the net like a bullet train on a rush-hour run.

They didn't win the Stanley Cup, but Pavel Bure won the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the year, Pat Quinn won the Jack Adams Award as Coach of the Year, and Ryan Walter won the Bud Light NHL Man of the Year for his work in the community. As well, Kirk McLean is runner-up for the Vezina Trophy (top goaltender) and is named to the NHL's Second All-Star Team.

Extractions: Former Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers forward Esa Tikkanen never had any trouble motivating himself during an NHL career that spanned almost two decades. Now that he's pushing 40, the Helsinki native has found a whole new reason to come to the rink. Tikkanen is a player-coach with South Korean team Anyang Halla Winia in the brand new Asia League, and is hoping his experience in the Far East will someday lead to a coaching job in the NHL. "I signed with this team for the opportunity to get some coaching experience," Tikkanen said Saturday at Tokyo's Yoyogi Arena. "I'd like to coach in the NHL someday and this seemed like a good place to get a start." In the NHL, Tikkanen had a reputation as a pesky agitator who could goad his opponents into taking bad penalties. In his new role as playing coach, the five-time Stanley Cup winner spends more time yapping at his teammates than at the opposition. In Saturday's 5-3 loss to Japanese team Oji, Tikkanen assisted on Halla's first goal with a pinpoint pass to teammate Marco Poulson, but spent much of his time on the ice directing his teammates.
Extractions: Canada Cup 1987 "Blade Wars" - 4-DVD Set Re-live the greatest hockey tournament of a generation - some would say, in history! This amazing DVD set features nearly seven hours of action from Canada Cup 1987, the six-team international tournament that culminated in the legendary Canada vs. Soviet Union 3-game final. With big hits, huge saves, and a speed of play that hasn't been seen since, you will see some of hockey's all-time greatest Hall of Fame legends compete for world supremacy in arenas across North America. After all was said and done, despite three breathtaking 6-5 overtime games, we all know who reigned supreme. "Gretzky...to Lemieux...HE SCORES! Canada wins the Canada Cup!" Disc One features "Blades of Summer", a 60-minute recap of the entire tournament. With commentary from the late, great Dan Kelly, it starts with all the big goals from the preliminary round, including highlights of games featuring Team USA (Pat Lafontaine, Bobby Carpenter, Phil Housley, Gary Suter, John Vanbiesbrouck) and Team Finland (Raimo Helminen, Jari Kurri, Esa Tikkanen, Kari Takko), who did not make the playoff round. Then, it moves on to the semi-final games, featuring the Soviets defeating Team Sweden (Tommy Albelin, Mats Naslund, Kent Nilsson, Mikael Thelven, Peter Lindmark), and Canada defeating Team Czechoslovakia (Jiri Hrdina, Dusan Pasek, Vladimir Ruzicka, David Volek, and a young Dominik Hasek in goal). Finally, it moves on to highlights of the remarkable 3-game final round, ending with Mario Lemieux's legendary OT winner.

Extractions: Canada USA "Anything less than winning is not acceptable," said Wayne Gretzky prior to the 1991 Canada Cup. "The Great One" would be back to help his country defend its 1987 championship, but he would not have his brilliant partner from that series. The back injury that had kept Mario Lemieux out for more than half the 1990-91 season sidelined him for the Canada Cup as well. However, hockey's next anointed superstar would be a member of Team Canada this year. Though he had refused to report to the Quebec Nordiques and was not yet a member of the NHL, 18-year-old Eric Lindros would contribute three goals and a tough, physical presence to the Team Canada roster. The 1991 Canada Cup witnessed a partial changing of the guard atop the hockey hierarchy, as Czechoslovakia fell to last place with a 1-4-0 record in the round-robin (despite the presence of young Dominik Hasek) and the Soviet Union failed to reach the playoffs after going 1-3-1. The USSR had been on the decline since cruising to an Olympic gold medal in 1988. With veteran national team members Vladimir Krutov and Igor Larionov allowed to join the NHL in 1989-90 and the subsequent defections of Alexander Mogilny and Sergei Fedorov, the Soviets no longer had complete access to their hockey resources. Sweden edged the Soviet Union for fourth place in the round-robin behind Mats Sundin's six points (two goals, four assists) before losing 4-0 to Canada in the semifinals. Christian Ruuttu, Petri Skriko and Esa Tikkanen led Finland into the playoffs for the first time in Canada Cup history before they lost 7-3 to the United States.

Extractions: My thoughts about Christmas I like Christmas very much. I think its the best time of the year. In autumn, when its cold in the mornings and theres frost on the grass and the trees, I remember that Christmas is coming. At the end of October I start to sing and listen to Christmas carols and light some candles. My mum says it is too early, but never before have I grown fed up with this. At Christmas I can relax properly. I forget all that which it connected with school. When its dark, snowing and Christmas lights are lit, people wish merry Christmas to each other and forget that they actually are busy. Gradually people get the Christmas message. The most I like is the evenings just before Christmas, when all the family gather in the kitchen. Then we make christmas food (not Dad and the boys) and talk about Christmas. In the evenings we make parcels and wrap them in the Christmas papers. I like it. Its lovely to wake up in the morning of Christmas Eve and realize its Christmas. Before the Christmas lunch we decorate the Christmas tree. Later we go to the cemetary and after that we visit Grandma. At home we go to thesauna and after that we eat rice porridge. Then come Grandma and other relatives. Santa Claus comes in the evening and

With the win at the Big Hat ice arena, Canada improved to a perfect 3-0 in round-robin play to claim first place in group D and set up a quarterfinal match with Kazakstan, which finished in fourth place in group C, in the knock-out portion of the tourney. The U.S., meanwhile, fell to a record of one win and two losses and will face the loser of the game between Russia and the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals of the single-elimination tourney getting under way Wednesday. The Russia-Czech Republic game, which will determine the winner of group C, will be played later Monday evening. Primeau, who plays with the Carolina Hurricanes of the North American National Hockey League (NHL), scored a short-handed goal in the middle of the second period, banging in a rebound off a Steve Yzerman shot.

Finland's bronze matches its performance in Lillehammer four years ago and is a moral victory for the team many considered only a distant dark horse in the first Olympics featuring the top players of North America's National Hockey League (NHL). Canada, meanwhile, emotionally drained after its shoot-out loss to the Czech Republic on Friday, were listless on the ice and will go home empty-handed after coming to Nagano as the clear gold medal favorite. Finland started the game without top star Teemu Selanne, who was sidelined with a pulled stomach muscle, but, nevertheless, went up 1-0 early on a power-play goal by Jari Kurri. With Steve Yzerman off the ice for holding, the Colorado Avalanche forward took a pass from Esa Tikkanen in the slot and fired a shot between the legs of Colorado teammate Patrick Roy, who was in goal for Canada.

First, Yutaka Fukufuji has finally started playing for Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL. Yutaka has lost some ground on the team because he had to miss the start of the season to go to Canada to work out some work visa business. Also, the team picked up an AHL goalie and he has had the hot hand starting the first 5 games of the season going 5-0. That said just last week Yutaka finally got the nod and he did not disappoint winning his first start allowing 1 goal and keeping the Condors in a recent game with 41 saves before losing in a shootout. Back in the Asia League Kokudo is up to their old tricks again starting to run away with 1st place with a record of 14-2-2. It's alos great to see Chris Yule back to his old self with 18 points in only 10 games since coming back from an injury. Ryan Fujita is also have to his best start in a couple seasons with 25 points. This team has way to much depth though. Recently Chris Bright, last year's MVP, missed 5 games due to a suspension and the team still didn't miss a beat. Consider this, Tomohiko Uchiyama has 16 goals. 5 more than the entire last place team Qiqihar!
