Extractions: A literal description of my state of mind Main Esa Tikkanen spent two decades in the NHL and now he hopes to become a coach. Since the NHL lockout drags on (and on and on and on), he's taken a player/coach position in the new Asian hockey league, with the South Korean team Halla. The league consists of teams from Japan, South Korea, Russia and China. In less happy news The NHL's official puck supplier has laid off half its staff, a result of the hockey lockout that entered its 123rd day on Sunday. InGlasCo, of Sherbrooke, Quebec, laid off 20 of about 40 employees from a plant that normally produces about 300,000 pucks and souvenirs for the 30 NHL teams. "The business has been down since September, we haven't shipped anything to any NHL teams, no souvenir or licensed products" Yet another group of people directly impacted by millionaires having a biggest-dick contest. Extractions: For the first time - Euro goalies to duel in Stanley Cup finals Unless unexpected things happen, a European born and trained goaltender will lead his team to a Stanley Cup victory for the first time in 109 years. Since the Sheffield, England crafted Stanley Cup trophy was awarded for the first time in 1893, no European goaltender has ever lead his team to a Stanley Cup final victory. Two European born and trained goaltenders have had their names engraved on the silver chalice: Czech Roman Turek of the Dallas Stars in 1999 and Swiss David Aebischer last season with the Colorado Avalanche. Both were back-up goaltenders. Turek did not see any playoff action in 1999 behind Ed Belfour while Aebischer recorded one minute of play as Patrick Roy's stand in. If Detroit wins the best-of-seven finals, Steve Yzerman and Brenden Shanahan will become the first players in 22 years to win the Olympic hockey gold and the Stanley Cup in the same season. Defenseman Ken Morrow (of Team USA and New York Islanders from 1980) is still the only one to have accomplished that feat.

Legends Of Hockey - Spotlight - One On One With Glen Sather Glen Sather at his 1997 Induction to the hockey Hall of Fame Jari Kurri,Grant Fuhr, Paul Coffey, esa tikkanen and Glenn Anderson through draft choices. http://www.legendsofhockey.net/html/spot_oneononeb199701.htm
Extractions: Glen Sather at his 1997 Induction to the Hockey Hall of Fame (January 13, 2004) I was born in High River, Alberta but I really grew up in northeastern Alberta two little towns, Viking and Wainwright, " explains Glen Sather. The president, general manager and coach of the New York Rangers has enjoyed a long, productive career both as a player and as an executive, and the path led to his Induction to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997 in the builders category. I played all my minor hockey in Viking and Wainwright and then went from Wainwright to Edmonton and played for the Edmonton Oil Kings and played there for three years. " In 1962-63, Sather and the Oil Kings, a team that also boasted another future coach, Pat Quinn, won the Memorial Cup as Canada's junior champions. " I signed a C Form with the Detroit Red Wings and in those days there really weren't any contracts - they took your rights. " Sather spent one more season with the junior Oil Kings, then joined Detroit's Central Hockey League affiliate in Memphis, Tennessee. It was quite a culture shock for the young player who had played his entire career in his home province. " I played junior for the Edmonton Oil Kings so I had been around a little but although I'd been across the border a couple of times, I'd never really been to the United States. Then I went to Detroit and turned pro. I was assigned to Memphis and went to Memphis State University.

Extractions: In February of 1987 during the yearly festivities at the Quebec Winter Carnival, hockey organizers planned a two game exhibition in the same vein as the 1979 Challenge Cup. Two games would be played in Quebec City during the all-star break. It would be the Soviet's Nationals versus the NHL all-stars and would be the central event of that year's Carnival. This NHL all-star team is included because still a majority or the league's premier players were Canadian, although a new crop of Americans were rising to the forefront. Esa Tikkanen and Jari Kurri would represent Finland on this team. The Americans were represented by Chris Chelios and Rod Langway. The Swedes by Ulf Samuelsson and Thomas Sandstrom...
