It's free! Save it. TORONTO - Joe Thornton may not fill the role of checking center until his twilight years, but he proved he could play it pretty darn well during this World Cup of Hockey. Teamed with Selke Trophy winner Kris Draper and Shane Doan, Thornton helped to shut down the opposition's top line for the whole tourney and did a particularly good job in the elimination round as he stymied the Jaromir Jagr line in the semifinal win over the Czechs.

I just finished reading the April issue of HOCKEY DIGEST, and I'm glad Joe Thornton is getting some recognition. He may not be flashy or a scoring machine like others, however he does all the little things to help his team win. Personally I'd take five Thorntons to 100 Jagrs. I love your publication and look forward to each new issue. By the way I also enjoyed your story on recycled goalies ["Resurrection," April 2002]. It is heartening to see Tom Barrasso doing so well again. Cory Stone Via e-mail I just finished the tremendous interview with Joe Thornton and I loved seeing the Bruins finally getting some positive press. Being a huge Bruins fan and not getting to see them much because of where I live, I just discovered Thornton's number and I now understand why he is so goodhe wears No. 19, the number also worn by the most underrated player in Bruins history, Dave Poulin. Poulin was a very integral player on and off the ice. Yes, he did have a lot of injuries, but even if he was just in the locker room, the team did well. With Thornton donning this great number, he also gets the Poulin mojo.

Bruins MICHAEL HOLLEY By Michael Holley, Globe Columnist, 11/12/2003 Did he mean it? Of course not. You're going to have to wait a while before you thank Joe Thornton for the memories, watch him place his No. 19 next to Raymond Bourque's 77, and send him away with tears and goodbyes. ADVERTISEMENT I'm guessing we're at least 10 years away from that. Igor Larionov still is being paid to skate, and he'll be 43 next month. No one is asking Mark Messier to leave New York, and he's 42. Thornton takes jabs as if he works in a ring rather than a rink, but walking away at 24 would trump Sandy Koufax and Jim Brown by five years. Who knew Joe was ready for a company watch, a box of inedible chocolates, and a VIP spot in a shuffleboard tournament? All of this became a topic when excerpts of a Thornton television interview began to trickle into Boston. On Monday, the Bruins captain told Canada's popular TSN that the constant on-the-job punishment high-sticking, clutching, grabbing, etc. has him frustrated. He said his back is killing him, even though he hasn't missed a practice or game this season. He said he sometimes wonders whether all this abuse is worth it. Put another way, he hinted at retirement.

Bruins BRUINS NOTEBOOK By Nancy Marrapese-Burrell, Globe Staff, 1/23/2004 Bruins captain Joe Thornton underwent surgery yesterday to stabilize his fractured right cheekbone. General manager Mike O'Connell said the operation, performed by Dr. Michael Yaremchuk at Massachusetts General Hospital, was a success. ADVERTISEMENT "The doctor was very pleased with the procedure," said O'Connell in a statement. "He wants to keep Joe in the hospital overnight as a precaution and we expect him to be released [today]. Joe will miss [tomorrow's] game against Florida at the FleetCenter and will be listed with a day-to-day status after that game." Thornton, 24, suffered the injury Monday afternoon in a fight with Rangers center Eric Lindros It's expected Thornton will be able to return next week, possibly for Tuesday's game against the Islanders in New York. Thornton was voted the starting center for the Eastern Conference in the upcoming All-Star Game Feb. 8 in St. Paul, but he won't be the only Boston player in the lineup. National Teams This is why this team is here, said joe thornton. It is exciting to play hockey and to win a championship would be awesome, said Smyth, http://www.hockeycanada.ca/e/teams/mens/worlds/2005/results/may14_canrus.html
Extractions: Vienna, AUT By Alan Adams The reason Smyth was all smiles was for the fact that Canada will play for a third straight world title on Sunday. And if Canada wins the title on Sunday, it will be its 24th world championship and that would put them one up on Russia (a.k.a the Soviet Union) on the all-time list. Coincidentally Canada beat Russia 4-3 in the semifinal on Saturday to advance. In season which saw the NHL season cancelled, the Canadians are shooting for a world title. They are playing for the right to call themselves world champs. Team Canada got to the Russians early. Wade Redden jammed a rebound for a goal at 1:38 and Sheldon Souray, who was benched in the quarter-final against Slovakia, made it 2-0 at 5:46. Dany Heatley then gave Canada a three-goal lead at 10:37 and when Ed Jovanovski bloated the difference to 4-0 at 1:40 of the second, the Canadians looked in complete control. But the game changed. The Russians came on strong and the Canadians sat back and the combination almost cost the two-time defending world champs the game.

The Canadians beat Slovenia 8-0 Tuesday in the early game and the United States got past Latvia 3-1 in the later game of the 16-team tournament. The tie-breaker formula will be used if Canada and the United States skate to a tie. So far, Canada has scored 14 goals and allowed 4, while the Americans have scored 10 and allowed 1. Joe Thornton and Brendan Morrison each scored twice, while Kirk Maltby, Simon Gagne, Rick Nash and Ryan Smyth added singles. Roberto Luongo got the shutout and he had to make three sparking saves on the way. He had a toe-save, glove-save combination late in the first period and another glove save in the third to keep the Slovenes off the scoreboard for the second straight game. Slovenia lost 7-0 to the United States in its first game. Thornton got things going offensively early for Canada, scoring on a breakaway at 1:03 and then on a deke at 5:08. Morrison made it 3-0 at 13:17.

Extractions: O'Connell tendered both players long-term contract offers on Tuesday Thornton a five-year offer and Samsonov a three. That's more generous than he needs to be in order to secure both restricted free agents for the upcoming season, but it's nowhere near generous enough to get the players to sign long-term now and thereby pass up a chance at true free agency next summer. Freedom at age 27 or after seven years of service, whichever comes first, was the only real player perk written into the new collective bargaining agreement. It could be argued that without it, there's no way there would have been enough ratification votes for a CBA otherwise slanted toward the needs of owners and entry-level NHLers.
