So yesterday he shipped minor league pitchers Justin Germano and Travis Chick to Cincinnati for third baseman Joe Randa. Towers then sent Burroughs down to Triple-A Portland, where maybe Sean can pull the ball once in awhile. Meanwhile, rumors were flying that Towers had completed a deal with Baltimore, sending first baseman Phil Nevin to the Orioles for starting pitcher Sidney Ponson. They were premature. "It's not done and I don't anticipate it being done for another two or three days, if at all," Towers says. "I like Randa," Towers says. "He is what he is, a baseball player. He's a solid third baseman, and he's having one of his best offensive seasons. And he's a good clubhouse guy. We just need to get production at that position. "We thought this was an important move. We hope this sparks us and gets us out of this funk. I'm getting tired of saying, 'We're 4½ games up,' or, 'We're still 3½ games up.' I don't want to be in the position in 10 days saying, 'Hey, we're only a half-game back.' "

Extractions: E-mail ... Discuss Hectic stretch coming up for Stars, NHL 11:34 PM CDT on Monday, July 18, 2005 By MIKE HEIKA / The Dallas Morning News The NHL is moving into a busy couple of weeks as it attempts to ratify a new collective bargaining agreement and get rosters in order. Here is the expected schedule and how it will affect the Stars: NHL Players are expected to hold their ratification vote for the new collective bargaining agreement. The union will meet in Toronto for three days and vote on Thursday. NHL board of governors will meet in New York to ratify the CBA. At this time, the league is also expected to hold the 2005 draft lottery behind closed doors and then release the draft order. The order will be reversed every other round. Some teams will receive three balls out of 48, some teams two and some teams one based on records in the last three seasons. The Stars have one lottery ball. Balls will be drawn until there is a 30-team order. The board also will discuss and potentially approve rule changes for the coming season.

Extractions: Game Play: Both interesting and true to the sport. Each player chooses six cards to represent his team. You need a Center, two Defensemen, a Right Wig, A Left Wing, and a Goalie. You then lay those out on the table in the starting positions for a hockey game (very nice illustrations in the rulebook, by the way). The goal is to get possession of the hockey puck, skate your team forward and shoot for a goal. Play ends when one person runs out of cards. At that time, whoever has the most points wins. This game does use custom dice to resolve actions, but even though I personally hate games which require additional materials, I didn't mind this as much because the dice were clever. These were six-sided dice with two blank sides, a puck, a whistle and an NHL logo. Whenever you are trying to shoot, you roll dice equal to your card's SHOOT stat. Count the number of pucks and NHL logos. If the logo matches the shooter's team, it counts double. The Goalie rolls dice equal to their BLOCK stat. If you beat the goalie, you score a point. Pretty simple and very quick. Other than that, all you really need to figure out is what to do with the cards. Each player has a hand of three cards. They must draw one and play one per turn. The cards will allow you to SKATE a player forward so they can take a shot (or if they don't have the puck, they add +1 die to the player who has it), SHOOT, PASS or STEAL. Of course there are actually a lot of variations. One card might say: "OFFENSE: SKATE wingman, PASS puck to CENTER, SHOT at +1". If you don't have a useful card in your hand, you may discard any card to SKATE or SHOOT (but only if you have the puck). One last thing: they don't include a puck counter, so they recommend you use a nickel.

Calendar Christina Sweeney, Dedham GOALIE If Dedham cannot find its Division 1 championship trophy, the first place the Marauders should look is Sweeney's arms. The three-time Super team member captured her Division 1 title this season by compiling a 1.33 GAA in the tournament, including a 2-1 win over defending champion and offensive powerhouse Woburn in the championship game, and was holding the trophy tight after the game. She was named Bay State Conference outstanding goalie of the year, Bay State MVP, Bay State first team all-star, and team MVP. For her career, which cocoach Don Parr described as ``five years of happiness,'' Sweeney compiled a 94-12-6 record, including 47 shutouts and two Division 2 state titles. Sweeney is a seashell collector who enjoys country music. Lindsey Harrington, Westford FORWARD Harrington is one of those players for whom statistics do not tell the whole story. The senior forward racked up 102 goals and 56 assists in her career, including 43 goals and 21 assists this season. But what she did for her team cannot be measured with numbers alone. Harrington, a three-year captain, led the Grey Ghosts to two straight Division 2 championship games, including a win in 2004. Harrington is a three-time Eastern Mass. All-Star and an honor roll student. The well-rounded athlete is the captain of the field hockey and softball teams and is headed to Amherst College in the fall. She also competes in the Bay State Games and with Assabet Valley.

NHL vs. Hollywood SCORE's 3rd Annual Celebrity Hockey Game Sunday, August 17, 2003 So, I was lucky enough to attend the game on Sunday and got to check off "see Keanu play hockey" from my list, where it was nestled between "kiss a kiwi guitarist" (checked) and "learn to make pistachio soufflé" (unchecked). We got to the Health South Center fairly early, which was good because we got to be in the shade while we stood in line and got to see people arrive. I watched Keanu from afar, but did manage to dork out, hop a rail and scream to becky 's guitarist, Paulie Kosta that he should " kick some ass out there today ". Of course, at that time I didn't realize that he was the enemy and I should have wished him a leg cramp or something. We eventually got in and got seated not too far from where becky members Robert and Rebecca were, figuring they would sit closest to the end where Keanu would be goaltending. This was a good call and minutes after we sat down, the players were on the ice doing their warm-up. Keanu did some stretches sigh ) and then positioned himself in front of the net and proceeded to block a good many of the practice shots on him.
