Extractions: Thompson Races Back Into Seattle's Lineup By Lawrence Goldstein Nate Thompson Nate Thompson is back, and that's bad news for opposing teams. The Seattle Thunderbirds (Western Hockey League) center and Boston Bruins prospect recently returned from a 13-game absence due to a knee injury, and has been piling up the points ever since. On his first shift back, Thompson broke free on a partial breakaway, but was stoned by Portland goalie Dustin Butler. "I got a good shot off on that chance, but the goalie made a nice stop. The knee feels good now, and my timing is back," said Thompson, who registered 11 points in his first 13 games this season. "Nate is a good, solid two-way player. He's a fourth-year player that brings experience, leadership and great skating ability," said Seattle coach Rob Sumner.

Extractions: Red Sox Patriots Celtics Bruins ... Hockey NOTES By Kevin Paul Dupont, 3/7/2004 If the Bruins are still shopping and Makeover Mike O'Connell contends he is still fielding calls the last piece of the puzzle is an action forward, a leather-palmed, face-washing agitator. It's an element the Boston general manager has sought since first taking up residence in the front office 10 years ago this summer. P.J. Stock came close to filling the bill, but as much as a mini-cult figure as he became, Stock almost fought too much. A little too small, a little too bold, coulda used a few pounds. Good agitators are accomplished in the fine art of hitting first with stinging checks, then following up with a lot of lip that goads opponents into stupid penalties. Hit. Yap. Duck-and-cover. ADVERTISEMENT In case it slipped anyone's mind, the NHL trade deadline is Tuesday, 3 p.m., by which time the Capitals and Rangers will have just under a month left to fit their empty sweaters with Kevlar vests for Fan Appreciation Night. That's going to be one epic lesson in tough love in those hockey-forsaken cities. The tattered rags known as the Rangers, seen here Thursday night, have perhaps the best available agitator in Matthew Barnaby. The former Sabre, who will be 31 in May, isn't the 335-penalty-minute cruiserweight that he was in his earlier days hard by Lake Erie. He's far more, uh, refined, heading into last night with only 120 PIMs added to his previous career total of 2,100. Barnaby has gall, and legs, and just enough offensive touch to make him attractive to a team that suddenly has a lot of interesting pieces. To wit: Depleted though they may be, the Rangers at one point Thursday night rolled out Barnaby on their No. 1 power-play unit. He's good, but not quite that good.
Extractions: Red Sox Patriots Celtics Bruins ... Bruins August 1, 2005 There might be some surprises when the National Hockey League's unrestricted free agent period opens at noon today. However, yesterday there weren't any. The Bruins announced the 13 players to whom they'd made qualifying offers before the 5 p.m. deadline along with those they didn't make offers to and none of the decisions will catch anyone off guard. Under the collective bargaining agreement clubs must, in order to retain a player's rights, tender qualifying offers to those under 31 who had 2004-05 contracts. Contracts come under three headings based on the value of the 2004-05 pacts minus the 24 percent rollback figure that was agreed to in the CBA: 1. Players making $660,000 or less have to be qualified at 110 percent of the amount; 2. Players making more than that figure up to $1 million must be qualified at 105 percent; and 3. Players earning more than $1 million will be paid at 100 percent of the amount. The 13 who are now Group 2 free agents (which means they're restricted and the Bruins have the right to match any offer from another club) are: P.J. Axelsson, Brad Boyes, Nick Boynton, Kevin Dallman, Hal Gill, Jonathan Girard, Andy Hilbert, Ivan Huml, Colton Orr, Sergei Samsonov, Martin Samuelsson, Joe Thornton, and Sergei Zinovjev. Andrew Raycroft and Zdenek Kutlak are still restricted free agents carrying over from last summer. The largest qualifying amount is Thornton's $5.13 million. Samsonov's is $2.774 million. Bruins general manager Mike O'Connell has said he'd like to lock up both to long-term deals and offered Thornton a five-year deal for about $25 million. Thornton's agent, J.P. Barry, said it's not enough and it's a strong possibility the captain could sign his qualifier and opt to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. The club offered Samsonov (also an unrestricted free agent next summer) a three-year pact and Neil Abbott, Samsonov's agent, countered. O'Connell said they'd be in contact soon.
