Weston /CCHA Correspondent MILWAUKEE According to the Hobey Baker selection committee, a Hobey Baker Award winner should "exhibit strength of character" and possess "oustanding skills in all aspects of the game." According to Michigan head coach Red Berenson, this year's Hobey Baker winner is "an excellent person" who "shares his success with his teammates." ADVERTISEMENT And this year's winner is "the same child today as he was when he was five years old," according to the ultimate authority on Brendan Morrison: his mother. "He has basically the same friends at home as the ones he grew up with," says Deb Morrison. "He's always kept in contact with them. He's always treated everybody as an equal." Morrison's linemate, Jason Botterill, echoed Deb Morrison's sentiments. "He gets all this media attention, but whenever you're just talking to him, he never feels above you, and you never seem to feel below him. He's always very warm and very humble. He's been like that to every player on this team. His respect for other players and other people is what sets him aside."

Obviously, his case is not unique, and we received an impassioned letter from the parent of another player who faced similar circumstances. Bob Shields is the son of David Shields, a recruit for Minnesota-Duluth who received a scholarship, but was cut, along with three others, by incoming coach Scott Sandelin after three days of practice. Like Bartlett, Shields was unable to go to another school without sitting out a year. Instead, he decided to turn pro and is playing in the Central League for Oklahoma City, where he has eight goals in 19 games. Bob Shields wrote: If [you] can't play hockey, or practice with the team, chances are very slim that other schools would risk future scholarship money on a player they can't evaluate.

Extractions: Daily Sports Writer DETROIT - Friday night, a pair of Michigan hockey players ... er, former Michigan hockey players - seniors Harold Schock and Blake Sloan - found themselves in an unfamiliar situation. Never mind that their temporary team, Team USA, was on the disappointing end of a 5-4, overtime loss to Team Canada in the inaugural World University Hockey Championship at Joe Louis Arena. What was really strange was that even though Michigan coach Red Berenson was in the building, the outgoing Wolverines were taking orders from Michigan State coach Ron Mason. Mason coached the team of U.S.-born seniors, while Berenson watched the game from the stands. Team USA also featured players such as Shawn Bates - star of the Boston University team that bounced Michigan from the NCAA tournament last week - and Michigan State's Tony Tuzzolino. "It was nice to play with those guys for a change, instead of having to hold them back all the time," Sloan said. "They're good guys. They just happen to wear the wrong colors, that's all." Sloan was an assistant captain for Team USA, while Schock was added to the roster Tuesday as a late replacement for Boston defenseman Jon Coleman, who withdrew for personal reasons.
The Michigan Daily Online Has the time come when Michigan hockey should be mentioned in the same breath Brendan Morrison, Jason Botterill and blake sloan are standing shoulder to http://www.pub.umich.edu/daily/1996/oct/10-14-96/faceoff/fo.index.html
Extractions: Has the time come when Michigan hockey should be mentioned in the same breath as the football and basketball teams? The Michigan Daily obviously thinks so, otherwise you would not be reading this first-ever edition of Faceoff, the hockey counterpart to football's Kickoff and basketball's Tipoff. Brendan Morrison said he took a long break from hockey over the summer. He deserved it. Michigan's senior captain, whose overtime poke-in goal gave the Wolverines their eighth national championship last March, did his share of celebrating after the victory. The numbers are impressive. A NCAA-record eight national championships. A .576 all-time winning percentage. Over 1,100 victories in 74 seasons. But numbers alone do not tell the story of Michigan's rich hockey history. Brendan Morrison, Jason Botterill and Blake Sloan are standing shoulder to shoulder at center ice, patiently having their picture taken. The hockey publication organizing the photo shoot is only one of the numerous media outlets following the Michigan hockey team since it won the national championship last March. After a couple snapshots, the photographer asks Botterill and Sloan to take a step back, so Morrison can appear front and center. Botterill gets a kick out of this, and he can't pass up the opportunity to take a shot at his teammate.

Extractions: Dan Boeser, University of Wisconsin-Madison At the young age of 23, Dan Boeser has already been diagnosed with and has overcome cancer, a disease that has the relentless ability to take the lives of many non-suspecting people. Not only did Boeser put up a fight more physical than any on-ice battle he was used to, but he has used his experience to help other cancer patients who are still in need of support. A native of Savage, MN, Boeser arrived in Wisconsin in 2000 to play hockey. He had two successful seasons in which he was named a WCHA Rookie of the Week twice and was a member of the 2002 WCHA All-Star team. During the off-season after his sophomore year, as Boeser prepared for another season with his team, he was diagnosed with follicular B cell lymphoma, a non-Hodgkins form of cancer that was found near his pelvis. Named an assistant captain to the team, Boeser played on that opening night as planned, but soon after was sidelined for nine games after suffering multiple fractures to his left hand. He once again made a comeback and finished the season with the Badgers. His post-season honors included the WHA-TV Jim Santelli Seventh Man Award, an award that is given to the player who fans think gives his all on the ice and best represents the trademarks of a team spirit and good sportsmanship. He also received the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

Extractions: February 23, 2001 As the March 13 trading deadline approaches we're hearing a lot of big names being thrown around. Hasek, Blake, Tkachuk, Fleury, Belfour, etc. From a Fantasy Hockey perspective these trades are really meaningless. A quality player will more than likely be a quality player on another team. His linemates may change, but his role likely won't. Look at Bill Guerin this season or Raymond Bourque last year. They never missed a beat. What affects Fantasy Hockey Leagues are the minor players that are involved in trades. These are either the young prospects on the other end of a potential blockbuster or just some guys involved in minor deals. Over the next few weeks we'll be discussing these players and what potential trades can do to their Fantasy production - this year and in the future. We will group them by team. Last week we talked about the Cup favourites - St. Louis, New Jersey and Colorado . This week we'll talk about the teams that are close to Cup contention but just aren't in the same league as last week's clubs - Ottawa, Detroit, and Dallas. Ottawa Senators: Peter Schastlivy, Shane Hnidy, Matthieu Chouinard, Colin Forbes, John Emmons

Extractions: 12.07.04 - The Grand Rapids Griffins are at it again, climbing toward the top of the AHL standings in a familiar story that they hope has a happy ending in 2004-05. The Griffins, top development team of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings, are owners of the AHL's best record since the league's merger with the IHL. In fact, they have posted 149 wins and a .628 points percentage in 261 games since start of the 2001-02 season. Grand Rapids has two division titles and a second-place finish to its credit, and finds itself tied with Milwaukee atop the West Division with a record of 15-5-1-0 through Sunday Dec 5. However, the Griffins have yet to drink from the Calder Cup, and are still looking for the franchise's first AHL championship. Under third-year head coach Danton Cole, the Griffins have won 10 of their last 12 games (with nine of the 10 wins by a single goal), and are a perfect 7-0-0-0 away from Van Andel Arena this season. One of four AHL teams averaging fewer than two goals against per game, Grand Rapids is winning primarily with defense, starting in goal with first-year starter Joey MacDonald and his 12-5-0 record, 1.78 goals-against average and four shutouts.
