Extractions: Daily Sports Editor Ice in the summer? The possibilities are enough to excite even an average hockey fan. Yet, in Michigan coach Red Berenson's hockey world, the thought has been a far cry from reality. Until now. Last Friday, under the guise of a last-minute pick-up game, some of the finest athletes ever to don the maize and blue circled the ice at Yost Ice Arena, reviving memories long dormant in the minds of Michigan hockey fans. At approximately 6 p.m., a feeling of familiarity wafted from the rafters of the old building. It was like days past at Yost. About 200 die-hard fans turned out for the event, which had the feel of an actual game - including line charts and a public address announcer. Former Michigan standouts Brian Wiseman, Steve Shields (1994 graduates) and Mike Knuble (from the 1995 class) skated circles around the nets in the first alumni game for the Wolverines. And the genius behind this summer soiree? None other than the coach himself. "I just wanted to add to the golf weekend," Berenson said, referring to the annual Michigan hockey golf tournament played last Saturday. "Guys come from a long way and make it a real special point for the golf weekend. I wanted to give them more. I thought, what the heck, let's give them a hockey game."

Extractions: Last updated Thursday, 08-Sep-05 00:17:49 EDT "Shields was acquired by San Jose prior to the 1998 expansion draft and performed exceptionally well. After 37 appearances, Shields even outperformed Vernon , but was once again a spectator come playoff time. Shields is at the age when most goaltenders begin to shine. At 6-3, 210 pounds, Shields covers a lot of net physically and intimidates the opposition with it. Shields is on the verge of becoming a solid No. 1 backstop. If not in 1999-2000, then surely by the following season." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 216) "A big goalie, Shields covers a great part of the net and intimidates shooters. Formerly Dominik Hasek 's backup in Buffalo, he learned by watching the best in the biz and steppe din with relative ease when traded to San Jose. Finally a No. 1 goalie in the NHL, he played in 68 games [sic] last season. Shields enjoyed an 11-game unbeaten streak in March [?], which prompted the Sharks to trade Mike Vernon to Florida. Shields has never looked back. He has the ability to get white-hot, which he has done on more than one occasion in the past."

Extractions: Don't Pass Over Nystrom Last night was the second night of the Jewish holiday Passover. I went to my parent's for dinner, so I don't really have time to blog. Instead of talking about last night's games, which weren't that interesting, except for the Devils blanking the Bruins to clinch , I'm going to talk about former Islander Bobby Nystrom, who also happens to be Jewish. Nystrom is probably best known for his Stanley Cup-winning overtime goal over Philadelphia , that started the Islanders' four-Cups-in-a-row dynasty. During the season he was an enforcer, racking up penalty minutes like the team dentist collecting teeth off the ice. But during the playoffs, Nystrom really came alive, becoming a genuine offensive threat, as his 39 post-season goals and 44 post-season assists (out of 157 playoff games) indicate.
Extractions: 57:31 10-0 Jamieson (Ellis, Tait) Stephen Murphy recorded his 2nd shut-out in a row as Great Britain overcame a nervy first period to beat China 10-0 in the relegation game. The result left Great Britain tied with Japan on points, but the Japanese 5-3 win puts them in 4th, a place higher than Great Britain. Indeed, the success of this team can be measure by the fact that had Japan not scored their two goals in the last minute of that game (the 2nd being an empty netter), Great Britain would actually have left the tournament with a bronze medal. Colin Shields did not play in the final game after breaking his wrist yesterday. Stephen Murphy was voted GBSC Player of the Tournament, and must surely have pushed Hungary's Levente Szuper close for Netminder of the Tournament. Norway won the gold with Poland and Hungary taking the bronze medals respectively. China were relegated to Division 2. Next season, Great Britain will be the 5th seeds in a group with France, Hungary, Japan, Israel and the 15th place team in the elite group. The venue will be decided in early May.
