While everyone talks football and baseball playoffs, the NHL drops the opening puck on its 2003-2004 season tonight. That's right. It's time for another glorious season of the sport that no one follows until the playoffs, no one watches on the television and no one except Canadians care about. But with 30 different teams in the NHL, including stops in such hockey hotbeds as Phoenix, Ariz. and Columbus, Ohio, we figured it might be a good idea to check things out, before the league's crippling labor crisis whittles the league back down to six teams. This is our preview. The top eight teams in each conference make the playoffs. The Eastern Conference This is an ad. #1. Ottawa Senators The Sens came within a game of reaching the Stanley Cup Finals in 2003. In 2004, anything less than the Cup will be deemed a failure. After all, this is a team that finished third in team scoring last year. And this is also a team that plays overly defensive hockey. So this is a team that is a pretty good team. #2. Philadelphia Flyers REGARDLESS OF HOW THE NHL's labor negotiations turn out, the Flyers are one of the few teams that barely will be affected. They're a money machine compared to most other franchises, which is why they confidently re-signed captain Keith Primeau in June to a four-year, $17 million deal. Primeau was a revelation in the postseason, easily Philadelphia's best and most intense player. No one bought more into coach Ken Hitchcock's system over the last two years, and Primeau was rewarded for it.

Extractions: Update: Parrish Signs in Nick of Time September 12, 2005 - 11:30pm: According to Newsday's Alan Hahn, RW Mark Parrish was not on the team's charter plane that arrived in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia Monday night. Reportedly he's en-route to the Islanders camp on his own after accepting a one year deal worth $1.9 million. The deal will make him an unrestricted free agent next summer. "I'm just happy to be back playing hockey with the boys, and that's all that matters," Parrish said. Time Ticking for Parrish - September 12, 2005: Today is physical day for the New York Islanders as training camp is just about to get under way. All players are guaranteed to be present, except one. RW Mark Parrish is still unsigned and according to reports he may not play for the Islanders this season, or anywhere else for that matter, if he is not signed before the morning. Tomorrow the Islanders leave by plane for Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in Canada for their first week of camp. "If he's not on the plane," Islanders general manager Mike Milbury said last night, "then we're in trouble."

Extractions: Thursday - September 15, 2005 Training Camp - Day #2 So far, coach Tom Renney has kept the training camp practices intense and high tempo. With all of the young players competing for spots, it would make sense that they push it to the limit to try and impress the staff. The guys over at Blueshirt Bulletin continue to have some of the best training camp coverage. So far it seems that many of the younger players look like they have a chance, at least, to play at the NHL level. Larry Brooks writes that Renney promised that the team would not make the "Manny Malholtra" mistake with this crop of youngsters. Larry also reports that Blair Betts is getting the first crack as the starting fourth line center. One disturbing thing Larry reports is that the referees at camp are letting everything go in scrimmages. Renney said that they would crack down today, and in my opinion it couldn't happen fast enough. The very last thing the Rangers need is a parade to the penalty box when the season starts. The new head of officiating , Stephen Walkom, promised that the rules would be strictly enforced.
