Seattlepi.com Mariners Blog: Arthur Rhodes Update rhodes will take over the closer spot for the A s this year. The statistic Arthurrhodes has blown 27 of 44 save opportunities in his career is http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/baseball/archives/001494.html
Extractions: Main Just as the local media is keying in on new Mariners closer Eddie Guardado, the California papers are concentrating on Arthur Rhodes. Rhodes will take over the closer spot for the A's this year. He claims to be ready for his new role even though he has blown 27 of 44 save opportunities in his career. San Jose Mercury News Comments i don't think that Rhodes will be a great closer, I think that he's more suited for setup. He's got good stuff, but i don't believe that he is intimidating and he doesn't have the closer's mentality. Posted by: Sean Miller at February 23, 2004 03:10 PM The statistic "Arthur Rhodes has blown 27 of 44 save opportunities in his career" is idiotic. How many of those blown saves came in the ninth inning? My guess is about 3-4. This is ludicrous because if he blows a game in the 7th or 8th it's a 'blown save' even though he was never going for a save in the first place because he wasn't the closer. Why don't you look at his holds percentage because that is what middle relievers accumulate, not saves. I bet if you look at it, it's pretty darn good.
