Seen and Heard: Day Two NASHVILLE When the Vancouver Canucks selected Ohio State's Ryan Kesler with the 23rd pick of the first round, it's not surprising that talk quickly turned to Kesler's teammate R.J. Umberger, another Canucks first-round pick. But according to Vancouver general manager Brian Burke, the two may not be teammates in Columbus for long. "We've never taken a player out of school early unless they've wanted to come," Burke said. "I think R.J. is ready to come out. Again, I talked to Coach (John) Markell and told him what I just said to you guys ... that we'd never take a player out early. If R.J. wants to come out, then we're going to try to sign him. He's got to take the next step at some point."

Extractions: By TIM GRAHAM News Sports Reporter 4/13/01 Buffalo's line - centered by Curtis Brown with Erik Rasmussen on his left and and Vaclav Varada on his right - constantly flummoxed and harassed Philadelphia's top trio of Daymond Langkow, John LeClair and Recchi. "I think we did get to them a little bit," Rasmussen said. "You saw them change lines a little bit in the third period (Wednesday) night, trying to get a little offense going." But Langkow, LeClair and Recchi remained bamboozled. Varada was nonstop ruthless, leading all Sabres forwards with 19:19 of ice time. He was hell on skates, repeatedly crashing into LeClair, blocking shots, grabbing loose pucks and firing them at Flyers goalie Roman Cechmanek. "I tried to finish John every time I had the chance," Varada said with a giggle. "I fell a couple times. He's a big guy and tough to knock down. But every time I was down I always get up and went right back again because we know he's their key player, and we don't want him to get going offensively." Rasmussen comes of age before our eyes (buffalonews.com)
Extractions: State News Sports Writer DETROIT - The four-year contract for the College Hockey Showcase has expired, but the four schools involved are looking to continue it. Representatives from MSU, U-M, Minnesota and Wisconsin met on Saturday morning and agreed to recommend to their administrations that the event be continued. Future sites and formats are yet to be determined. The Showcase idea started five years ago as the brainchild of MSU head coach Ron Mason and has taken off from there. Some of the talk around Joe Louis Arena, where this year's event was held, indicated that Minnesota coach Doug Woog has wondered about getting Ohio State involved to give it a true Big Ten flavor. Woog also suggested adding a championship game. The Showcase is currently played in a round-robin format. SHOWCASE RECAP U-M turned out to be the big winner at the Showcase, going 2-0 on the weekend. The Wolverines (13-1-1 overall, 6-1-1 CCHA) beat Minnesota 4-3 in overtime on Friday and then blitzed Wisconsin 8-4 on Saturday. The Golden Gophers (9-5, 8-4 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) tied the game 3-3 with seven seconds left in regulation on a goal by sophomore winger Erik Rasmussen.
