Lipsey has signed a nucleus of nine players for next season, with new faces David Longstaff and Shawn Maltby joining old boys Stevie Lyle, Rob Wilson, Dan Preston, Dwight Parrish, Mark Bultje, Joe Cardarelli and Ivan Matulik in the locker room. But with a massive chunk of his budget spent, Lipsey now has to complete the jigsaw. "I still need two centremen and I'm looking for players who are quick on the draw," he said. "We did not win enough face-offs last season and that's an area I definitely want to improve. "I know who I want, but I can't see anything happening for at least a couple of weeks. "I'm pleased with the way things have gone and I was happy to get Ivan signed up this week. "I always knew he was coming back it was just a few details we needed sorting out.

Extractions: July 19, 2005 With a noteworthy past that spans six decades and marks its 54th season overall in 2005-06, three characteristics that continue to define the Western Collegiate Hockey Association are history, tradition and success. From the founding days as the Midwest Collegiate Hockey League (MCHL) from 1951-53, to the Western Intercollegiate Hockey League (WIHL) from 1953-58, and ultimately on to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association in 1959, this prestigious athletic conference has developed and maintained a tradition of excellence that truly is second to none. In fact, no collegiate conference - in any sport - can top the impressive list of national scale accomplishments of the WCHA and its member teams. Since 1951, teams representing the men's WCHA have earned a record 35 NCAA (national) championships, finished as the national runner-up another 27 times, and qualified for a berth in collegiate hockey's national championship round - the NCAA Men's Frozen Four - in 50 of 53 seasons overall. And since it's founding in 1999-2000, teams representing the women's WCHA have now captured six consecutive national championships in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005.

The lone Ukraine shot came off the stick of Oleksandr Matviichuuk in the slot. The best USA chance in the period came with just over a minute to play in the stanza when Jeff Halpern (Potomac, Md.) fired from six feet out. Ukraine scored on a two-on-one at 10:15 of the second and had a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes. Kostianyn Kasianchuk finished the rush with Vitali Semenchenko by getting the puck through the legs of Ty Conklin (Anchorage, Alaska) from close range. The U.S. had good pressure on a late period power play with its best opportunity coming from Mike Knuble (Grand Rapids, Mich.) on a low, hard shot from the right faceoff dot after a nice setup by Mike Modano (Livonia, Mich.).
