Extractions: Click here to get the Daily Briefing in your inbox document.write(''); 04/10/2001 - Updated 02:21 PM ET O'Donnell gives Devils a controlled boost By Kevin Allen, USA TODAY The New Jersey Devils acquired defenseman Sean O'Donnell more for what he doesn't do on the ice than for what he does. O'Donnell doesn't take chances. He doesn't measure his self-worth by his offensive numbers. He doesn't make the kind of low-percentage plays that cause coaches to utter colorful words that aren't appropriate for tender ears. "On this team, the last thing you want to do is try and stretch what your job is or to try and do too much," O'Donnell says. "This team is so talented that if everyone just does their job, we will be fine." Though other March trades had more marquee appeal, O'Donnell's acquisition was important to the Devils, who had looked around the league for a defenseman for most of the season. The Devils' two major losses from last season's championship team were defenseman Vladimir Malakhov and winger Claude Lemieux, both of whom left through free agency. Their need for a defenseman was greater than their need to replace Lemieux's postseason experience.

Extractions: Red Sox Patriots Celtics Bruins ... Bruins By Ron Indrisano, Globe Staff, 1/9/2004 The Bruins can use all the offense they can get, and last night they got a boost from the least likely source defenseman Sean O'Donnell. ADVERTISEMENT In the 42d game of the season, O'Donnell scored his first goal. He was the only Bruin on the roster to have played more than four games without scoring. He picked a good time to tally when he slapped one in from the right side at 8:23 of the first period to get the Bruins off to a 1-0 lead in their 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at the FleetCenter. "Obviously, that's not my thing, but I like to help out any way I can," said O'Donnell, who scored one goal in 70 games last season. "It was nice to get the first one and get on the board. We've had trouble scoring goals at home, and it was nice to pitch in." The game was a bit lackluster, mainly because both teams had played the previous night. The Bruins had won in Detroit and the Penguins in New Jersey. "We did battle very hard [Wednesday] night," said O'Donnell. "This was a difficult game. Pittsburgh is a team that works hard, but, man for man, we're better. We didn't do it for 60 minutes, but it's nice to get the 2 points. The way they play, Pittsburgh is one of those teams that tries to make it as boring as possible. We talked about it, and we knew this would be a little more of a lunch-pail game. If we didn't get the 2 points, we would have fallen short of what we wanted. We were on a high from beating Detroit. It would have been hard to fight back in Detroit, and then not get 2 points tonight."

Extractions: Red Sox Patriots Celtics Bruins ... Bruins BRUINS 3, PENGUINS 1 By Nancy Marrapese-Burrell, Globe Staff, 1/9/2004 Given the way the Bruins' season has gone, it wouldn't have been a shock to see a letdown last night. ADVERTISEMENT After all, they were playing their second game in as many nights and were coming off a remarkable shutout of the Red Wings in Detroit, so a little dip in their play wouldn't have been unexpected. And with the Bruins and Penguins, who also were coming off an emotional win over the Devils in New Jersey, tied at 1-1 with less than four minutes remaining in regulation, it appeared the teams were fatigued and headed toward overtime, and a tie. Then rookie Patrice Bergeron intervened, riding to the rescue. He scored his 11th goal during a power play with 2:52 left in the third period, giving the Bruins the go-ahead goal on the way to a 3-1 victory at the FleetCenter. It extended Boston's unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1-0). Bergeron, just 18 and converted from center to right wing, made a heads-up play to put his team on top to stay.
