The nine former CCHA players hoping to earn a U.S. Olympic team berth are goalie Ryan Miller (Michigan State), defensemen Mark Eaton (Notre Dame), Andy Roach (Ferris State) and John-Michael Liles (Michigan State) and forwards Jason Blake (Ferris State) Ryan Kesler (Ohio State), Mike Knuble (Michigan), Brian Rolston (Lake Superior) and Doug Weight (Lake Superior). "The orientation camp will be a terrific opportunity for our staff to come together with the candidates for our Olympic Team to assess the potential make-up of our squad," said Don Waddell (Duluth, Ga.), general manager of the 2006 Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team in making the announcement. "It will not be a tryout camp as the evaluation process will continue throughout the first part of the NHL season, however, it will be an important first step in the total process." The camp is designed to assist in the preparation of the 2006 United States Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team that will compete at the XX Olympic Winter Games to be held Feb. 10-26 in Torino, Italy, and will consist of both on- and off-ice components.

And last Saturday afternoon, it led me to Kingstons Memorial Centre for the 73rd edition of the Royal Military College/West Point hockey game. Then it sat me right next to the RMC band. In my minds mutated Canadian adaptation of Field of Dreams, I came, not knowing why, into the sea of red uniformed officers and sat down, in my blue winter jacket. Fights songs played and players fought, and I found myself chuckling at the idea that I was at a hockey game in which the players could, for once, be called soldiers without the use of hyperbole. And with that, all of the social, cultural and linguistic connections between sports, war and in this case international relations, became as clear as the dawns early light. The game itself is rich in history, and its original appearance in Canada in 1924 marked the first time that West Point officers set foot on foreign soil, a trend that has not risen in the last 80 years, judging by the smattering of Army supports, whose blue dress was drowned out, in the sea of RMC red. Nevertheless, West Point has become a good hockey team, and in a true exhibition of American progress, they managed to be the first to score.

Extractions: May 20, 2004 Former Wildcat Ty Conklin named to Team USA for 2004 World Cup of Hockey COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. USA Hockey today named 26 players, including 14 members of the silver-medal winning 2002 U.S. Men's Olympic Ice Hockey Team, and 13 returners from the 1996 squad that raised the World Cup of Hockey trophy, to the United States roster that will compete at the World Cup of Hockey 2004. The U.S. is the defending champion of the World Cup of Hockey, having defeated Canada, 5-2, in the third game of a best-of-three final series in 1996, which was the last time the event took place. The World Cup of Hockey 2004 will be held August 30-September 14 across North America and Europe. "Our goal was to assemble the ideal team for a seven-game playoff series in which every game is a seventh game," said Pleau. "We examined a number of factors including experience, youth, energy, speed and versatility, while considering an overall team chemistry that allows us to gel as we move through the tournament. We are very pleased with those we have selected to represent the United States, and excited about the challenge of defending the championship in the World Cup of Hockey." Fifteen forwards were selected to the roster, nine of whom competed in the World Cup of Hockey 1996: Tony Amonte (Hingham, Mass./Philadelphia Flyers), Bill Guerin (Wilbraham, Mass./Dallas Stars), Brett Hull (Belleville, Ont./Detroit Red Wings), Steve Konowalchuk (Salt Lake City, Utah/Colorado Avalanche), Mike Modano (Livonia, Mich./Dallas Stars), Brian Rolston (Flint, Mich./Boston Bruins), Bryan Smolinski (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Senators), Keith Tkachuk (Melrose, Mass./St. Louis Blues), and Doug Weight (Warren, Mich./St. Louis Blues).
