Scores of Residential Condos Go Up on the East Side Word came out of Hilton Head, S.C., yesterday that Mark Messier is still contemplating a return to the ice. Though the 44-year-old center is long past the day when he could control the outcome of a hockey game through his own force of will, he is still more than capable of taking a regular shift as the third- or fourth-line center for a productive hockey team. Of course, whenever rumors about Messier circulate, Madison Square Garden must be considered a possible destination. Theoretically, it would be nice if Messier and fellow unrestricted free agent Brian Leetch, 37,could finish their careers in style on Broadway. The two played instrumental roles in bringing hockey to the forefront of the New York sports scene in the mid-1990s, culminating with a heroic performance that brought the Stanley Cup to the Garden for the first time in 54 long years.

SatireWire | NHL A Welcome Distraction From Recent Violence The National hockey League opened its regular season Wednesday, forward Ericmessier into the boards, injuring messier s shoulder in a senseless attack http://www.satirewire.com/news/0110/hockey.shtml
Extractions: HOCKEY PROVIDES WELCOME RESPITE FROM VIOLENCE Pittsburgh, Pa. (SatireWire.com) In Pittsburgh, Penguin right winger Stephane Richer slammed Colorado Avalanche forward Eric Messier into the boards, injuring Messier's shoulder in a senseless attack that temporarily mitigated memories of the senseless attacks on America on Sept. 11. Colorado won the game 3-1 In Toronto, Maple Leafs' center Darcy Tucker did his part to distract fans from the seemingly random brutality of a chaotic world by blindsiding Ottawa's Karel Rachunek, leaving the Senator defenseman motionless on the ice for 10 minutes. Ottawa squeaked out a 5-4 win. Rachunek was taken off on a stretcher "The disquieting images of New York and Washington are forever enchased on the minds of millions, but at some point, we have to let ourselves escape those images," Tucker said in a post-game interview. "But I will say this: Whether people perpetrate violence against others for political reasons or religious reasons, it's unjustifiable and inherently wrong,"
ESPN Classic - Great Expectations Haunt Talented Lindros eric Lindros was the NHL s MVP in 1995. Cut from the mold of Mark messier, his childhood hero, Lindros was projected to follow Wayne Gretzky and Mario http://espn.go.com/classic/biography/s/Lindros_Eric.html
Extractions: "We're going to look back and say, 'Wow, what could have been with this guy. And what still could be.' I haven't closed the book on Eric because this one's going to have more pages than War and Peace," says Michael Farber of Sports Illustrated in ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Even as a 16-year-old, Eric Lindros' body seemed out of place. So huge, so strong, so striking when matched against his peers. Lindros wheeled his 6-foot-4, 220-pound frame, so perfect for the football field, around hockey rinks with the aggressiveness of an enforcer and the dexterity of someone much smaller. A tough guy with speed, finesse and scoring ability. Eric Lindros was traded from Philadelphia to the New York Rangers in 2001. Cut from the mold of Mark Messier, his childhood hero, Lindros was projected to follow Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux in the pecking order of stars. Reporters dubbed him "The Next One," although "The Big One" might have better fit his size, ego and hype. "The best 16-year-old player I've ever seen," said Philadelphia Flyers general manager Bobby Clarke, who would become his boss and then antagonist. "He could play in the NHL right now."
