Extractions: UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Hall of Famer Dale Hawerchuk reflects on hockey career The Ukrainian member of the Hockey Hall of Fame class of 2001 went to his first training camp in the summer of 1981 determined to make a difference for the Winnipeg Jets. It turns out, training camp made a difference for Dale Hawerchuk. "Whenever you're the first overall pick, you know you're going to a weak team," said Hawerchuk, who at the time was a slick junior center coming off back-to-back Memorial Cups with the Cornwall Royals. He was being compared to Wayne Gretzky in terms of his ability to see the ice and make those around him better. "With that in mind, I wanted to come in and make a difference. The first few days, I didn't know if I could cut it. I mean the guys are men ... they're bigger and faster and stronger. I was scared. I was the first pick and I didn't think I could make the team." Hawerchuk did indeed make the team. And he didn't have a bad season, either. His 45 goals in 1981-1982 rank as the third highest total ever by a rookie, as do his 103 points that season. The lowly Jets hadn't made the playoffs their first two years in the NHL after joining from the World Hockey Association, but they finished second in the Norris Division. Hawerchuk attributes the fact that the Jets lost to St. Louis in the first round of the playoffs to his team's lack of experience. But inexperience didn't prevent the Oshawa native from becoming an instant star in the National Hockey League. He spent nine dazzling seasons in Winnipeg, averaging 42 goals and 103 points per year. Then came five productive years with Buffalo, one with St. Louis and two in Philadelphia. In 1,188 games, "Ducky" scored 518 goals (23rd all-time) and 1,409 points (13th all-time). A bad hip forced him to retire at the tender age of 34. His second career is raising horses at his farm in Hockey Valley, Ontario.

Extractions: Andreychuk not done yet Discreetly, but not silently, the New Jersey Devils wondered whether Dave Andreychuk was finished. As he struggled all of 1997-1998, it was suggested the 500-goal scorer had lost his scoring touch. But if Devils' coach Robbie Ftorek's looser reins have proved anything this current season, it is that Andreychuk does still have it. After scoring the game-winning goal in overtime against the Philadelphia Flyers before Christmas, Andreychuk actually shared the team lead in goals with Petr Sykora. "He's doing the things he has always done well," Ftorek said. Even more impressive was the fact Andreychuk, 35, was in double figures in goals (he finished the recently concluded 1998-1999 regular season with 15 goals), despite missing several games with a bruised sternum following a hit from Florida Panthers' forward Peter Worrell and assorted other physical ailments later on. "I don't know who was concerned. I wasn't concerned," Andreychuk said. "It was a while before I felt back to normal. My first week back I didn't play great, but then I felt pretty good. Before that, I couldn't do too much. I feel more confident." At the time, some three months into this season, Andreychuk was being mentioned among the top candidates for the Bill Masterton Trophy for perseverance. He basically played in some degree of pain all season long.

Extractions: By Allen Barra Four years ago David Hill, the president of Fox Sports, admitted to an interviewer that the great Fox hockey experiment had been a flop. "We don't know what's wrong. We still believe in hockey, but we've got to figure out why people aren't watching like they used to." The "used to" reveals part of the problem here. The truth is that Americans have never watched professional hockey in great numbers, though it was a bit puzzling that even fewer had watched the games on Fox after a $155 million, five-year push. For the most part, the answer was simple: People didn't watch Fox hockey telecasts because Fox hockey telecasts were telecasting hockey. The more hockey Americans saw, the less hockey they wanted to see. Steven Solomon, the NHL senior vice president, called the 1998 ratings "a one-year blip." What he should have said was that hockey's entire history on television was a half-century blip.

Extractions: HOCKEY SUCKS NHL PAYS GOONS MILLIONS TO BEAT EACH OTHER UP BY SUSAN G. COLE the leafs may have bagged the game Tuesday night, but don't expect me to honk my horn or plan a playoff party. The NHL is holding its Stanley Cup tournament, but I'm holding my nose. Slowly but surely over the years, I have found myself developing a hate-on for the national hard-on for hockey.I speak here as a serious sports fan who believes spectator sports are the last bastion of live TV and that there's no greater thrill than watching men play for make-or-break bundles of cash. I speak as well as a hockey-pool addict who's managed hallelujah to have Doug Gilmour on her list this year. But the graceful sport of lightening-fast moves and spectacular saves is now so completely corrupted by NHL-style brutality and ugliness that it no longer exists. My current antipathy started when millennial celebrants suggested my feelings for Canada ought to be wrapped up in the image of Paul Henderson scoring his goal during the 1972 Canada-Soviet summit series. It got tweaked when fans wanted to give Rocket Richard a state funeral.

Extractions: KYLE McCLAREN D-MAN DELIVERS Kyle McClaren By Paul Freeman All NHL teams covet intimidating defensemen who can deliver bone-jarring hits. Last season, the Sharks were lucky enough to land such a force, Kyle McLaren. He had been in a contract impasse with Boston management. Born in Saskatchewan, raised in Alberta, the six-foot-four, 225-pounder has never hesitated to throw his weight around on the ice. After building his reputation as a Bruins blueliner, 26-year-old McLaren has become one of the keys to San Jose"s highly effective defense. TOP SHELF: Well, I knew it was going to be a tough year in Boston. They were unloading some guys. New coach was coming. I was excited for for the opportunity to be playing for another team, a fresh start. Things didn"t work out well last year, the end of the season. But I knew that coming into this season was going to be a different story. TOP SHELF:
