She has to. When it comes to a good cause, Laraque's just a guy who can't say no. "Most of the players calendar themselves," said Andries, executive director of the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation, an organization that co-ordinates charitable activities for the team. "Sometimes (Georges) would over-commit and say yes to three things at the same time. "Georges would do these things and not tell anyone, and we wouldn't find out until he turned up in the paper the next day." The 26-year-old Oilers enforcer visits schools to tell children to stay off drugs. He made an appearance at Monday Morning Magic, a private party that took special-needs children out to enjoy the Klondike Days midway on July 22. And he tells kids he meets to work hard to overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams. "I know that because of the position I'm in, people, especially kids, will listen to me," said Laraque yesterday as he prepared for a charity soccer game.

The Montreal native is known for his ability to level opponents with bone-jarring checks and rock-hard fists. However, the Oliers' tough guy is steadily improving his offensive game and is becoming a threat around the net. This year is Georges' his sixth professional season with the Oilers' organization. He began his pro career with the Hamilton Bulldogs (AHL) in 1996-97 and was the sixth leading scorer with 14 goals and 34 points in 73 games and ranked fifth in penalty minutes (PIM) with 179. Georges made his NHL debut with Edmonton in 1997-98, playing in 11 games and was scoreless with 59 PIM. He then split the 1998-99 season between Edmonton and Hamilton scoring three goals and tallying five points and 57 PIM in 39 games. He scored his first Oilers/NHL career goal on Jan. 7/99 at Phoenix. In the 1999-00 season, Laraque was selected as the Oilers most popular player by Edmonton hockey fans. That year, he played his first full season with the Oilers and enjoyed his most productive season establishing single season highs for games (76), goals (8), assists(8), points(16) and PIM (123). He also scored his first career NHL hat trick with three goals against L.A. on Feb. 21.

Edmonton Oilers forward Georges Laraque is a regular contributor to TSN magazine. Georges is currently out of the Oilers' line-up recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery. We talked to Georges on the telephone Friday. Q: When did you have surgery Georges? A: I had the operation two days ago and it's going pretty good today. It's only arthroscopic surgery so it's pretty minor. They shaved some torn meniscus (cartilage) out, that's it. It's the third time that I've had torn meniscus on same right knee. Q: How long did the operation take? A: About an hour. Q: Did you start feeling the injury during a game? A: No. In the practice after the game against L.A. (Jan. 16) I couldn't skate. I couldn't put any weight on my leg and I knew right away that something was wrong with it. Q: Were you worried at first that it could be something more serious?
