Extractions: NATIONAL HOCKEY ASSOCIATION (1909-10 to 1916-17) The Strachans, of Montreal and the O'Briens and Barnetts of Renfrew, well established and successful in business enterprises were not to be easily denied. A meeting of the Montreal Wanderers and Renfrew was called for December 2, 1909, in Montreal. Franchises were granted to Renfrew, Haileybury, Cobalt and the Montreal Wanderers. The league was launched forth under the name of the National Hockey Association. The teams bound themselves to stick together for three years and post a thousand dollar guarantee from each team to make the agreement binding. The bitter rivalry between the CHA and the NHA was on !! Peace overtures of a kind were made but lead to nowhere. Proposals to include the Wanderers and Renfrew in the CHA fell flat, these teams refusing to desert the National Hockey Association without taking Haileybury and Cobalt. Between the meetings of December 4, 1909 and the opening games in the rival leagues, a player war of gigantic proportions with salary figures, skyrocketing to unheard of levels, developed. The hockey world was startled in mid-December by the announcement that Renfrew had signed Lester and Frank Patrick , each at salary of $3,000 to take part in an eight game schedule. The Patricks, at the time, engaged in the lumbering operations with their father at Nelson, B.C. Another significant signing, at a cost to Ottawa of the CHA, was losing their star defenceman Fred "Cyclone" Taylor to Renfrew.

A-C, D-H, I-N, O-S, T-Z Welcome to our web page! In the beginning.... skates made of wood were first used by hunters about 200 A.D. Later in Finland, hunters used skates made from the leg bones of deer. Early bone runners were later replaced by iron and then steel..... 1880's There was a local roller polo league with teams from Houghton, Calumet, Marquette, Ishpeming, Negaunee, and Escanaba. Somewhat like hockey; a rubber ball was used, the sticks were small, almost like walking canes, and the action could be wild! The ball was put in play in the center of the rink and both teams rushed for it, "resulting in a high action game". Their roller skates were not the in-lines many use to play hockey today; they had four wheels per foot; two wheels by toes and two wheels by heels. Local "Casino" Roller Polo Team
